It was of his sister. He spoke in an interview with rolling stone. He won't speak of the details to this day. Other than that her life was taken my her husband then he turned the gun on himself. He then raised Annes babies. As he explained in Sister," it was as if God had opened their chests and put his heart into her and her heart in him" they spoke of that scenario when they were young, it's why it hurt so bad...
First and foremost I can't get that guitar riff out of my head, love it. "watching the world on tv" is most likely a reference to the fact that we see so many unfortunate events that don't hit home until it happens to us. I think this song is very personal to him as his sister was murdered. just my two cents. i'm guessing others may have a similar opinion but i haven't gone through all of the comments...
@HighFroctuse92 i've heard other versions along with this one and i'm getting the impression that we become numb to the reality of the world. a few lines prior to that he asks, "what has become of us?" When he says, "watching the world on tv," this, in my opinion, is talking about how we can simply observe everything on tv and the world is nothing more than a station on tv..

Hillsong United says something in one of their documentaries that has the same meaning. they say, "Its not fair that we can sit and watch the evening news from the comfort of our living rooms and pity those who lived where the storm hit or where the ground shook or where the water rose and simply feel sorry for them and then change the channel and get on with supper." same idea. the video is found by "hillsong united I-HEART: We're All In This Together"
@stackleft listen to seven on the live in europe album....dave rocks the shit out of it there...trust me i used to hate that song too but after that version i loved it. listen to it
I don't know if it was just this evening or its the meaning of the song, but this performance you can tell is VERY DEEP! Most people may think this song needs work, but if Dave is emotional and decides to belt the last few lines, good for him, makes the song that much more intimate.
@stackleft some moron called me a tool over the interent. MY life is over. and for the record, everyone else likes the song 7, but you whine about it. why? why dont you like the song seven and you have to make fun of it like the fat kid in grade school?
@stackleft ill admit that yeah, im 20 years old but what does that have to do with my music preferences and my knowledge on it? im just trying to state that the song "seven" is a good ass song. Its got a nice funk groove and as a drummer i totally dig the 7/8 time signature. C'mon man, age is just a number. this song is great, seven is great, pretty much every Dave song is great, can we just agree on that?
@snugglebear97653 no not every DMB song is great. as much as i love these guys some of the songs like 7 make me shake my head. are these the same guys that made dreaming tree or blue water or seek up?? i saw these guys when you were still shitting in your diapers so i know what they're capable of. as i said big whiskey is a good record but where the hell is boyd? it's like he's not even on the damn record. and to leave this off made no sense.
@stackleft so....first off...i dont really care if you saw these guys when i was shitting in diapers. i saw them a month ago. they are good. because you are apparently older than me does not mean you have a "better taste in music" or you know dave any better than i or anyone else does. im just saying, damn, open your mind a little bit, dave did, he just rocked the electric guitar on this album a little more? oh and yep, it does happen to be the same band that made dreaming tree and seek up.
@stackleft its a possibility that you are not coordinated or musically inclined enough to bob your head to the song, i as well know what this band is capable of, please dont talk to me like im some "mainstream" dave fan.
@stackleft The funny thing is that dave is about loving and ignoring differences. I would have to say you are the more inexpirienced dave fan, look at your recent comments on videos this is what you said "this dumb bitch can't keep her fucking mouth shut." shut the fuck up with your slave bullshit. Niggas are always whining aboout shit that happened 300 years ago..." thats just a couple. the fact is you are obviously just an ignorant child who thinks only hes right.
@kadleckyle I guess seeing these guys at Trax back in 1992 is "inexperienced." You were probably still in your dioapers back then. I don't think the song is that good. It's good live in all but where is Boyd? It's like they left him out on the whole Big Whiskey record. More Boyd and less Tim Reynolds.
deer creek 09 was awesome seein this teased night one then played full band night two...hope dave finalized some lyrics and they play this song this summer
The photograph of you and me When these old boots was brand new Look at you Look at you smile smile smile Look at you smile What has become of us Chasing the avalanche down Watching the world on tv Must be something better on Shotgun is for putting in your mouth babe In a world as upside down as this one Pretty patterns on the wall Send your mother screaming down the hall babe
Baby oh Why don't you just talk to me talk to me girl Oh yeah All the time we had That you .??... a shotgun What a waste of such a girl What a waste of .??... What a waste - Won't ya just talk to me girl Make it open and close again We could go back to being friends And see me out .??...
What has become of us Chasing the avalanche down Watching the world on tv There must be something better I hope we always have a .??... .??... You know this strange that we .??... Don't you remember Where we were all the light and all the heaven What has become of us I know I .??... up a part of you What has become of us
Shotgun .??... can argue better when .??... get it off your head Better make a plan instead to stay You almost had .??... You almost made it two or three .??... And because you did .??... Come back Come back Come back Come back Come back Come back
Sister mother what .??.. Never .??... No more you're gone Never had the chance to say goodbye Bye bye Why What has become of us I love you all the way you .??... All of the kids .?? We all will laugh and .??... What of a sister's love I'll give you everything to have you back Again and a one of us I'll hold the loneliness .??... What has become of us
To me it's so obvious that the song, or atleast this version of it, is about his sister...she was murdered by her husband in 1994, shot in the head.
Pretty patterns on the wall
Send your mother goin screaming down the hall
Come back (x6)
I never had the chance to say goodbye
...etc.
such an emotional and personal song and performance, combined with amazing music, this actually made me cry. don't think a song has ever made me cry before. Dave never seizes to amaze me.
I've been going to alpine for 6 years now and yes this year's spac kicked alpine's ass..i think any real fan can agree that spac and alpine are pretty much equal and we can all agree that this is a kickass version of shotgun
highroller are u kidding me ?? how is spac at all shitty its been great every year and dave loves playing there check out night twos set list from this year and tell me different
yea absolutely, i travel from the philly area every year to see them at SPAC, dave even listed it as one of his favorite venus to play at. the setlists and energy from the band are amazing every year
if there is another album, it will be on there. I just don't think it would have been appropriate to put a song about suicide on an album dedicated to a deceased band member.
he just hits such emotional depth with this song and he just creates such a humble persona up onstage. this is a truly great recording.
i wish that a lot of concert favorites (shotgun, break free, idea of you, joy ride) would've made it onto big whiskey and i can't imagine why they didn't they're all so fantastic.
i couldn't be more disappointed that this isn't on the new album. i was in love with it before they even added a bridge or chorus to it, and said all it needed was a chorus and outro to be amazing... lo and behold
Yea DMB fans i was there that night at SPAC and it was a great show. This performance was really emotional and lively. Highlight of the summer. RIP LeRoi. Long live Groogrux
it is weird that Roi is being shown when he says that, but the song is all about his sister and how she was murdered in South Africa, so the line is directed towards his sister... the song overall is an extremely sad and very powerful song
Stella and Grace are his own daughters. I think originally both him and his sister were taking care of them but I believe now its Jane taking care of them but I could be wrong.
i also think that Some Devil is about Anne and her husband. she's the angel, he's the devil, for the family left behind it's gotta be a hard thing to "let go" of.
Great Concert. I live up in new york and i have been going to spac since i was 8 to see these guys. im just getting into guitar and i have almost all of this guys songs by memory down on 6 string. I'd like to start playing a 12 string but i gotta no what is that guitar dave uses? Any help would be great RIP leroi.
No I just got finish memorizing all of the tabs for his songs after about 4 years of studying them... What i meant to say is i just got into tabbing some of the lillywhite sessions and revamping some tabs of tims solos at luther collage and storytellers. Now im just getting into composing. Thts why i wanna try the 12 string out
The one in this video i think is a veillette (spelling?) gryphon 12 string... tuned DGCFAD. This guitar is fairly expensive.... I emailed veillette several months ago about getting a guitar and (s)he responded about $3000 base plus several different options.
I don't think it's all going to be new material for the album, they have to put this and a dream so real, and idea of you on there. Why not? They always play songs out before they do them in the studio, and that's the way they like it, with the exception of everyday and stand up(aside from hello again). they have to have some of the songs we've heard on the album!
Actually, Dave has said that it is all new songs, so it is still unlikely that this will end up on there. Yet, its still not impossible. I want it to be but I'm not getting my hopes up.
He only played this song once this summer tour. I was at both nights of spac, both nights were rediculous and to hear this song the only time during the tour makes it that much better
Seeing this live was amazing. That show seriously kicked ass. Such a shame LeRoi had to leave us when he did, he had a lot more left to give. Hope the band can soldier on without him, and the SPAC 6/21 show will live on in legend.
The Alpine Version is better than him going entirely off the lyrics singing about his sister? I'm not going to lie, I haven't heard it but that's hard to believe.
Oh my god. Just an epic song, what an amazing video, it gave me chills beyond belief, seeing Roi play so well and Dave just belt it out about his sister, "come back!", really was just amazing. DMBs music just is so powerful and means so much
This version of the lyrics are just too powerful to take away from or put more onto. I believe this will probably be either close to the album version or minor things will be done. So far this is one of my favorite songs and one of the most lyrically balanced songs it just seems to fit the music perfectly (which Dave does well). cant wait for next summers tour
reading the lyrics to this version is like reading poetry. Dave has the ability to write stuff that has so much hidden meaning although this song is about the death of his sister anne. This is one of my favorties. I lost my grandpa in May and this song helped me get through all the pain. thankyou so much Dave for everything. rip leroi.
is there anyone who tell dave to put this on the new record, I don't know if he has set lyrics for the album but it would be amazing to hear a finsished version of it...the intro's are so cool to this song... I love the live (improved) lyrics and all the screaming but I'm dying to see the album version, PLEASE DAVE!!!!!! we are begging you!
As far as I've been able to gather over the past year or so, it's about a girl committing suicide in her bedroom, conveniently lined with dave style lyrics
I thought it was about his sister dying, and when he found out it was like a shotgun blast to his head. His mom came running to tell him screaming his name. It was too intense, he "wanted to believe it was just a dream". In the beginning he is talking about a picture of them together when they were young in a pic.
with the new album not released yet, it'll be very interested to here the finished lyrics to the songs. If not an entire song none of us have heard written about roi, you gotta expect at least him tied some way into this song. you know what i mean?
you have a good point, but I think since the main lyrics will be bassed on his sister, I mean the intro is pretty general, about how the world is messed up...
So true, when you lose a loved one it does follow you through life. My father passed three years ago and it is so amzing to me how much I give myself and love and positive vibrations to anyone and everyone I interact with. You never know. You just don't. Be kind to all no matter race sex age or whatever. Be kind. Dave you inspire me and so many. Thank you, DPR
Wow, I didn't catch the reference to this sister the first time I watched this video...That's so amazing and emotional. I can't even imagine the pain he and his family went through after his sisters death. I love Dave's passion, and this song is a true testament to his talent.
Wow! I caught the references to his sister. It's something how the death of a 'loved one' can follow us through out our days, especially if we never had a 'chance to say goodbye'. Hearing his song and witnessing his passion tells of a love for his sister so pure that I am moved to show my family (and others) more of my love. It's so powerful, there's nothing like it...Love.
hahaha i know right? I just want them to play it more this year!!! I heard it twice last summer but they aren't breakin it out this year like they did last. Its cool though. next summer after the new cd comes out... dude its gonna be SICK
what an excellent video! it was an incredible show. did anyone catch the reference to his sister at about 5:45. something like, "come back, come back, sister"... followed by "i never had a chance to say goodbye" and maybe another reference a minute later with "sister... i'd give anything to have you back" thats powerful stuff.
Wow, entirely missed that, nice catch. Definitely seems to be saying that which is in fact very powerful because that is nowhere near the normal lyrics.
yeah, its hard to make out exactly what he's saying but it appears to be something about his sister. There seems to be alot of references in the song to her. The song has definitely changed a lot. Its different from last year and totally different from its debut year. It will be interesting to hear what it sounds like when it emerges again.
Dear god one of the best shows I have ever seen, and I was SCREAMING when I heard them play this tune!!!!!!!!!!! Makes the hair stand up on my arms :-)
This is beautiful - thanks so much for making this - I'd love the DVD. I was at this show, and this brings me back - really appreciate your work on this!
wow! another great video! I can't believe you were able to tape this entire song. I had enough trouble getting a few seconds of some songs with my camera without getting yelled at by the ushers.
My fav version of this song, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it...

Great Concert. I live up in new york and i have been going to spac since i was 8 to see these guys. im just getting into guitar and i have almost all of this guys songs by memory down on 6 string. I'd like to start playing a 12 string but i gotta no what is that guitar dave uses? Any help would be great RIP leroi.
academygould 3 years ago
You just started getting into guitar and you have almost all of Dave's work down?
No you don't.
RHGDamaso 3 years ago

DMB2741 3 years ago
Actually, Dave has said that it is all new songs, so it is still unlikely that this will end up on there. Yet, its still not impossible. I want it to be but I'm not getting my hopes up.

best version is the 1 from 2007 sampler at alpine. hands down
maroonpug7 3 years ago
He only played this song once this summer tour. I was at both nights of spac, both nights were rediculous and to hear this song the only time during the tour makes it that much better
nhlaxplayer13 3 years ago
Seeing this live was amazing. That show seriously kicked ass. Such a shame LeRoi had to leave us when he did, he had a lot more left to give. Hope the band can soldier on without him, and the SPAC 6/21 show will live on in legend.

best version by far!!!!!!

this is one of the top 3 lyrical versions of this song. it's so moving. this is a must for the cd.

Amazing song. Decent version...
Alpine 07 Version FTW
perlandsson1 3 years ago 3
The Alpine Version is better than him going entirely off the lyrics singing about his sister? I'm not going to lie, I haven't heard it but that's hard to believe.
vaxarado 3 years ago
Oh my god. Just an epic song, what an amazing video, it gave me chills beyond belief, seeing Roi play so well and Dave just belt it out about his sister, "come back!", really was just amazing. DMBs music just is so powerful and means so much
Seanyboy52692 3 years ago 2
man I wish they would bring this one back. such an amazing song, reminds me of classical music at some parts
Seanyboy52692 3 years ago 2
this song is so amazing.
seekup35 3 years ago 3
This version of the lyrics are just too powerful to take away from or put more onto. I believe this will probably be either close to the album version or minor things will be done. So far this is one of my favorite songs and one of the most lyrically balanced songs it just seems to fit the music perfectly (which Dave does well). cant wait for next summers tour
bizzwhit 3 years ago 3
reading the lyrics to this version is like reading poetry. Dave has the ability to write stuff that has so much hidden meaning although this song is about the death of his sister anne. This is one of my favorties. I lost my grandpa in May and this song helped me get through all the pain. thankyou so much Dave for everything. rip leroi.
seekup35 3 years ago 2
is there anyone who tell dave to put this on the new record, I don't know if he has set lyrics for the album but it would be amazing to hear a finsished version of it...the intro's are so cool to this song... I love the live (improved) lyrics and all the screaming but I'm dying to see the album version, PLEASE DAVE!!!!!! we are begging you!

Chills.... I am a strong proponent of shotgun, and truly hope it makes the next album

matttsa89 3 years ago 6
anyone have the lyrics to this version.
DMB2741 3 years ago
I think it's clear now that it's about Anne, if the lyrics stay this way. It's pretty obvious at the "come back, sister" part...
dhartley34 3 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
it's about is sister gettin pwned. bam bam.
cpta752 3 years ago
this version seems like its gotta be about anne..murder suicide ya know
L2thaface 3 years ago
whats this song about?
Kaokan26 3 years ago
As far as I've been able to gather over the past year or so, it's about a girl committing suicide in her bedroom, conveniently lined with dave style lyrics
theprofessiona1 3 years ago
good to know, ive heard this song a hundred times, and never really grasped it
Kaokan26 3 years ago
I thought it was about his sister dying, and when he found out it was like a shotgun blast to his head. His mom came running to tell him screaming his name. It was too intense, he "wanted to believe it was just a dream". In the beginning he is talking about a picture of them together when they were young in a pic.
lakermech 3 years ago
ive heard this one to. this song doesnt really have set lyrics yet so ech version could mean something different
Kaokan26 3 years ago
It was by far the best pair of DMB concerts I've been to! Night two was so special.
This song is amazing, I don't know how Dave gets through singing it.
VWgirl24 3 years ago
The camera cuts to Roi as he sings "I never had a chance to say goodbye". Chilling

Holy shit....I got hit at 5:50 Come back come back come back come back SISTEr...Wow
perlandsson1 3 years ago
Yea and his eyes... at the beginning.. you can see tell he is revisiting that photograph in his head. And Leroi.... a very emotional video for me
pauldobbsjr 3 years ago 2
with the new album not released yet, it'll be very interested to here the finished lyrics to the songs. If not an entire song none of us have heard written about roi, you gotta expect at least him tied some way into this song. you know what i mean?
DWareMhouseB 3 years ago
you have a good point, but I think since the main lyrics will be bassed on his sister, I mean the intro is pretty general, about how the world is messed up...
DMB2741 3 years ago
this is why i love dave. his emotion is genuine and he puts his heart, soul, and musical talent into his music
golfismygame88 3 years ago 2
So true, when you lose a loved one it does follow you through life. My father passed three years ago and it is so amzing to me how much I give myself and love and positive vibrations to anyone and everyone I interact with. You never know. You just don't. Be kind to all no matter race sex age or whatever. Be kind. Dave you inspire me and so many. Thank you, DPR

Wow, I didn't catch the reference to this sister the first time I watched this video...That's so amazing and emotional. I can't even imagine the pain he and his family went through after his sisters death. I love Dave's passion, and this song is a true testament to his talent.

this song stirs up so much emotion, Dave M. is such an amazing songwriter...
chipnshakes 3 years ago 2
Wow! I caught the references to his sister. It's something how the death of a 'loved one' can follow us through out our days, especially if we never had a 'chance to say goodbye'. Hearing his song and witnessing his passion tells of a love for his sister so pure that I am moved to show my family (and others) more of my love. It's so powerful, there's nothing like it...Love.

what an excellent video! it was an incredible show. did anyone catch the reference to his sister at about 5:45. something like, "come back, come back, sister"... followed by "i never had a chance to say goodbye" and maybe another reference a minute later with "sister... i'd give anything to have you back" thats powerful stuff.
pigeonjohn3 3 years ago 6
Wow. I didn't catch that--very powerful.
I was there, it was amazing!
YouMightDieTrying 3 years ago
Wow, entirely missed that, nice catch. Definitely seems to be saying that which is in fact very powerful because that is nowhere near the normal lyrics.
vaxarado 3 years ago
yeah, its hard to make out exactly what he's saying but it appears to be something about his sister. There seems to be alot of references in the song to her. The song has definitely changed a lot. Its different from last year and totally different from its debut year. It will be interesting to hear what it sounds like when it emerges again.

The entire show, except for the beginning of ddtw and a little of ants due to a run in with security

wow! another great video! I can't believe you were able to tape this entire song. I had enough trouble getting a few seconds of some songs with my camera without getting yelled at by the ushers.
