Robards is so powerful that his performance is downright painful to watch, particularly for anyone who knows this play (in college some 30 years ago, I was more or less a two-bit O'Neill scholar). Robards was of course a fine actor. But O'Neill always seemed to pull him into another dimension . That phenomenon is most noticeable in these marvelous excerpts. But we get much of the same from his Jamie in the film of "Long Day's Journey" --
