hovanes AIVAZYAN , living under the communist regime... was under pressure to change is last name to aivazovsky... dont twist up the story... in any case...the man was a remarkable artist none the less.
Aivazovsky was born in Russian Empire; he went through Russian school of painting ( which was based on Italian one.) Thus Aivazovsky is not part of "Armenian school of painting," ( if such thing even exists,) but inseparable part of Russian Art.
Simply, BEAUTIFUL beyond words!!!!These paintings are alive!!!
My mother's last name is Aivas (in spanish, from Aivaz in french, from Aivazosky) Her grandfather and his family moved to Beirut. They had to leave Istambul because the Catholic's massacre and because they were very close to the Sultan.

lots of interests help to develop human emotions which then come across on the paintings...Leonardo da Vinci also had many interests (just wondering about the connection of interests and emotions as well as skill).
I forgot to mention a well known Economics professor by the name of Daron Acemoglu, he is someone who is making quite some interesting advancements in the research of Economics. He is another Bolsahye-Armenian.
In order to be Russian you simply must to love Russian homeland. So don't argue he was Russian or Armenian. Some Russian Great rulers and number of people wasn't ethnic russians (Rurik, Katerina The Greate and even Stalin).
Armenians are an interesting culture, the guy who runs the biggest resort chain in Turkey is of Armenian origin (Sevan Nisanyan) and he created a great amount of money to boost Turkish tourism. I wish one day all of our ancestors can share Anatolia once again and heel the wounds of the past.
Thanks for the indo on Sevan...There is another Armenian guy with the same name, he is jewelry designer in Turkey, Turkish first lady prefers his jewelry...Sevan becakci...
I didn't hear about him, but I know about Nisanyan and his chain of his hotels. Many of the best architects in the Ottoman era were of Armenian descent from what I know.

@MyDimitry : there have been a lot of Armenians who had changed their names to adapt to their society, but they stayed Armenian in the community and soul.
There are a lot of paintings of Aivasovsky in Ukraine too because he is considered Ukrainian painter too not only because of Feodosia is in Ukraine now, but because his father and brothers of his father were born and lived near Lviv (Ukraine) and visited Armenian Church in Lviv. His father taught him to play the violin and sang Ukrainian songs. Once Aivazovsky performed them in the concert in St Petersburg. They say he invited home Ukrainian kobzars to listen them.
no Turner has another stile- more like Renoir and maybe impressionarists.....Ayvazovskiy gives full of colours and vivid more realistic seascapes.....great painter- he painted a few canvases for sultan Hamid palace in Kostandnupolis(Stanbul) and Sultan gave him Madjidie medal BUT BECAUSE OF MASSACRES AND GENOCIDE OF ARMENIANS BY TURKS IN 1909-1915 HE THREW that medal and all the money from sultan into the see...and painted armenian massacres in TRABZON
Also, all of his paintings are full of enthusiasm. Even in the worse storms, there is always a small ray of light appearing somewhere on the horizon, meaning that the storm will be over soon and the people/ ship will be saved.
Aivazovsky was one of the most notable people of the Crimea- he's done so much for the city of Feodosiya that this impact will live on for centuries. He left all of his painting & House-museum to his native city of Feodossia so that it will always attract the tourists. Besides other things he initiated the design/construction of the rail road in the Eastern Crimea( it's still functioning). He always tried to do smth for F. & people using his wealth and influence, unlike the current politicians.
As u have seen from my video he was equally a patriot for Crimea where he was born and Armenia where his roots are from. He has done equally much for both countries/nations but Armenian part is always omitted in Russian books. His collection is also in natioanl Gallery of Armenia signed in Armenian, Matenadaran has his letters to Cathalicos of Armenia in Armenian language and he asked to be burried in Armenian cemetry in his native Feodossia and the writtings there r both in Russian and Armenian.
Beautysavesworld I used to be the turkish user called yarakpasha who said regrettable things on forums. I just want to know I changed my opinions on the armenian genocide, don't know though if you would care. Peace.
There are about 15 paintings by Ayvazovski in St Lazarro ( Mekhitarist island near Venice)- and some of them are in extremely bad shape. One painting has a huge football ball size hall in it... This masterpieces need to be repaired and saved for future
