I've had all three technologies in digital projection. LCD, DLP and LCOS. DLP is definitely better than LCD. But you need a high end DLP to eliminate the possibility of 'rainbows'. LCOS, especially JVC's DILA technology is the best in my opinion. No rainbows to worry about and a black level to die for. It offers the smoothest most film like images that are virtually artefact free.
I recommend if your not sensitive to the rainbow effect get DLP .I have a DLP Optoma HD66 my friend has an LCD Epson 8350 .My projector is only 720p his is 1080p ,but I'm not impressed at all with it for all the $1300 he spent on it. I got mine for $450
Problem with lcd is that the panels suffer deteriation, air filter, they need an auto iris to open and close making noise just to match the black levels of a good dlp, also motion blur, dlp is much faster than lcd which makes it alot better 4 gamin
@binweevilsrocks Yeah that sucks some people see it ,some don't. I have never seen any rainbow effect ever, not even on my 10 year old infocus x1 with a 2x speed color wheel.I also have a home theater in my house and none of my guests have never seen it either.Usually for people who do see it they should choose a projector with a fast color wheel speed that will deminish the rbe or stop it or if your into 3d alot it stops the rainbow effect all together because of the 120hz rate 60 for each eye.
@LEWIS3845 an update on the comment i have recently got a infocus in24 +ep learnbig DLP unit and i thought i would try it after use all day today i have not seen it at all this is the first time my eyes have adjusted to these units i even had a acer x110 that i had to sell so am well pleased about using dlp now.
i had the x3 model and could only use sometimes because of the slow colour wheel
The problem with side-by-side test is that both projectors should be calibrated to the same color temperature etc. Otherwise one of them will look more blue or red. DLP often has better blacks but LCD is the only viable option if you see the rainbow effect on DLPs.
There is no reason why people should buy lcd. there are stupid filters to clean and they are really unreliable. my old lcd projector got dust inside so i got funny dots all over the image! dlp is so much better!!
...now set a Barco Cine 9 (or other similar spec'd) CRT projector...and these two projectors get turned off in the first minute or two.... the only problem with CRT projectors, even still is cost... they can still be pricey, but oh to worth the extra cash...people who see mine don't believe me that it's a CRT, because they have been brainwashed to think the new stuff is better...
I just love the way they boast every single tiny feature, such as: Did you know... 216 BILLION COLOR COMBINATIONS!!! 15,000 to 1 CONTRAST RATIO!!! Most people don't actually know what the specs mean. Corporate marketing tools at their greatest.
@MIKON8ERISBACK ...they have had to do this since the inception of this new type of display tech...a good quality CRT setup (front or rear projection) will still walk the specs of new sets...colours, and contrast ratios are STILL superior on my 52" Panasonic for example...but they had to pull consumers away from the old style sets somehow, so they boast about things they never really did before... and etc....and since that's where they started they have to keep it up...
@MIKON8ERISBACK great news people. i've just identified the cheapest 3d 1080p projectors. that's right 1080p in 3d, after long googling searches: the optoma hd33 native 1080p 3d and the epson powerlite 3010e.
i kinda get where your coming from, but you realise that the contrast ratio for me atleast is a pretty important thing to look for, ive had a fair few projectors in my time and the one thing that i find noticeable is the contrast. colour cominations dont bother me so much as the overall prokector tends to end up making more difference than that specifically

If you want the longer lifespan of up to 100,000 hours of use without the lamp burning out, LCD-LED is the way to go. I read the DLP lamps burn out after 11,000 hours which will give you about 5-6 years until you have to replace it, which will cost around $350.
@trentonator I think it depends on what brand you buy. I have a Philips DLP that I bought in Dec. 2006. I had to replace the bulb in it last year and it barely lasted a little over 13 months before I started have issues with it again. I'm thinking about buying a Mitsubishi 65" DLP for $1000 and i'm hoping it will last longer than my Philips tv.
@nateword TV's that big are perfect for entertaining company. I've seen LED tv's go up to 55'' but they are pricey at around $2200 and up. DLP's are cheaper but you will eventually have to replace the bulb. I bought the Mitsubishi TV despite knowing that I'm gonna have to replace the bulb eventually but I think I got a pretty good bang for my buck since their build quality is way better than Philips.
@chaseman94....yeah i love my dlp but i guess i'm sucked in by the LED picture.the LED i want is 1299 at hhgregg and it's a 60',my dlp is great for company and gaming but(to me)the picture isn't very pristine when playing blu-ray,but i may not have it set for the best picture
DLP foreverz!!!!! DLP IS WAY BETTER AND I SUPPORT IT TO THE DEATH AND LCD SUX WITH NO USE IN ANY WAY IN ANY CAPACITY AND IT IS NO GOOD AND EVER SINCE I BOUGHT MY DLP I GIVE IT UNDYING LOYALTY OVER ANY LCD AND IF ANY LCD OWNER WANTS TO FIGHT WITH ME I SAY BRING ITR ON I WILL DEFEND DLP'S HONOR..
Newer doesn't always mean better. I hate the way some people think that just because a TV manufactured in 1985, for example has a bad capacitor and craps out in 2010, and people automatically think that it is a piece of shit that needs to be smashed. The thing is is that many American TV's RCA, Zenith, etc. Manufactured before 1986 lasted a lot longer than any of the stuff you will find today. Sony Trinitron TVs from the 1970s up until today are also of extremely high quality.
My point is that to make a perfect test, the projector bulbs would have to be the same on model as well as age. (They change color over time). The units would have to have the same optics behind and in front of the imaging units. Also, the electronics equalise the video to make it more linear. Etc... Do you get my drift? Sorry for not being very clear.
They should've forced them to be quiet and write down their answer. The dude speaking out influenced all of them and when the others joined in how could any of the rest dissent?

And who are these crème de la crème techies anyhow?
@jeabo0adhd "Both projectors were set up by experts from the manufacturers for the best possible picture quality" So no this test is most definitely as good as it gets.
@jeabo0adhd "Both projectors were set up by experts from the manufacturers for the best possible picture quality" So no this test is most definitely as good as it gets.
This is the best comparison of anything ever posted. Finally someone got it right. I owned a PT-AE900 Panny when it came out (LCD) upgraded to a PT-AE4000 (LCD) and a JVC DLA-HD950 (D-ILA) and Samsung SP-A900B. Obviously the JVC is the best and I love the new Panny...but there is something about DLP that makes it easier to watch.
I have had both LCD and DLP Pprojetors and I will never get a LCD again. No matter how carefully you baby it, LCD panels go bad. Now they are claims that the new panels don't deteriorate like the old panels did. Yeah right! A well made DLP will definitely look and last better then an equivalent LCD. The drawback is that most LCDs in the under $1500 range have lens shift which is essential for placement and the DLPs in the same range do not!
To think DLP is better is a joke, In the real world of home cinema DLP is a laughable. rainbow effect isnt noticeable to everyone, but those who can see won't touch DLP with a barge pole. But then LCD isnt much better. LCOS leads the way.
This is finally a great projector comparison!!!!! Finally done right! I can't believe the 2 companies allowed a head to head and set their projects up for this. It's an all or nothing for both. Best video comparison I have ever seen. Update needs to be done. For the idiot who said it was Z not Zed (I'm from the USA) Zed is actually English-yeah from England. Moron!
(contd) And when it comes to what's best for the consumer you'll also need to factor in of the buyer is sensitive to RBE and weather the projector has enough adjustment possibility in terms of zoom and lens shift. DLP projector tend to lack in this area.
Oh! And most people don't hire a professional to do an ISF calibration. They use it as it is out of the box.
So in terms of real life scenario. This test was utter crap.
Wow! Talk about useless test. First of all, try replicating real life scenarios. Most people don't live in a warehouse. Second, running two projectors side by side will clearly affect the overall picture quality since there will be more indirect light bouncing around in the room.
I have an LG HS201 HD LED pj and I think mine looks better than both of those!!! Not to mention it didnt cost nearly as much... AND I never have to change the bulb.
@cjrizzle93 I have also a led projector, it's a CRE X205 it has PIP & POP functions.
Can accept up to 1080p signal, it has 2 HDMI, dvd component, vga, composite and s-video interface. Well, this is my first projector so what i can say is ..... this is really amazing
@displaylou I have never heard of that and cant find it to check it out but it sounds awesome! The HS201 is my first pj and Im very happy. I know its not the best of the best but it fit my budget and it does what i need it to do! Check out my vids if your interest.
I have a Hitachi built Viewsonic. Yes it shows the pixels if you stand in front of the screen but sit back and its a cinema experience. And its 5 years old! But can't wait to get true HD, but will it be better than the one I have. Also was the Sanyo the best LCD available? Always to get a test before buying!
I have an Optoma HD65 as my first projector, I haven't got it set up yet though cause I need to get a stereo and screen. Its DLP which this video wins hands down but it doesn't mean it is that way across the board.
good choice, no matter what people say that flat panel is the best, Well its not, They only say that cause they have one and not a superior Mitsubishi DLP TV. I have 3 dlp tvs, One of them is the 73". I wish I had the new 82" mitsubishi though. The color crispness and brightness is amAZING.
hehe well the Pany just came out while the Infocus came out 07... Personally I don't like LCD's image to my eyes the blacks are more blue greenish while the DLP are more grey but the image does look more black.... I like LCOS projectors. I'm waiting to see how the new LED projectors stack up... w e shall see
Left side looks the best and its my favorite HDTV format, DLP imo I feel that DLP tvs give you the movie screen through the TV in true miniature imax definition while lcd looks like crt technology and plasma looks like smears on an old mirror imo.
I am in need of a new projector as of tonight my bulb blowed and I have had my infocus x1 for about 6years and I have decided to just update and get a newer model I have went through 2 bulbs with the x1 and I dont know alot about lcd dlp but I do no that the brightness on x1 was not good enough and fuzzy on certin movies
There was no suspense here, because it is obvious which one is going to be clearly superior. LCD's exaggerated contrast ratio specs thanks to a dynamic iris cannot match the true and obvious higher native contrast of the DLP, which is apparent in most scenes.
have a couple of questions maybe somebody can answer.have the Hc1600 dlp ,what would be the best setting for brillant color.and its 720p native but I can force into 1080i and p what resoultion should I run in for best results,I love Blu-ray and want to make sure I get the best image possible
But thats the beauty of it. Whe the picture fades buy a lamp for 300. Wen the LCD picture fades, go buy anolher LCD TV. I'll choose a 300 dollar lamp over another 2000 dollar tv any day
well , dlp works via light , obviously its mirrors on a chip , and mirrors move images as fast as light travels , hence no blur like u get on LCD panels that r inside lcd projectors :)
Sorry, but DLP projectors give me headaches, and while I originally preferred them for colour accuracy, the headaches from the flicker and rainbows ruins it for me.
TBH, I've seriously doubted The Gadget Show's credibilty lately, since they seem to be rooting for whoever pays them most. It seems unlikely that this is the case this time, but are those projectors both the best of their kind?
Lolwut? I think you mean DLP rear-projection TVs. They are comparing projectors here... the image comes from the front, so there is the maximum viewing angle possible of any screen.
you know contrast ratio has been taken as a joke by manufactuers, they just keep pumping it up so monkeys like you think "oh wow this must be good because it has a 3,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio!" Contrast ratio just means that say the darkest pixel is 15,000 times darker than the brightest pixel... use your brain
@Xarieus yes and also there is not a fixed measurement that is used by all companies, you cant compare two tv's made by different companies cause they each use their own contrast measurement (10000 to 1 by lg, is not the same10000 to 1 by sony)
Firstly the infouce is worth $5500 and the sonyo z2000 is worth $2500. Half the price. you can not compete the two. They should of tried the sonyo z3000 thats worth $4200. This projector will blow it away. Very Bad Review
Don't know where you het your facts the IN83 which is two big steps up from the IN81 featureed here can commonly be had for a street price of $3600 whereas the IN81 goes for about $1800 or less. Get your facts straight before you post. IN83 annihilates any Lcos or LCD proj I have ever seen bar none.
This video was brilliant because i have just ordered my in80 (virtually the same beamer). So it was a BIG relief that they didn't flame it in the end. Phew
man a single DLP projector can reproduce good pictures but the rainbow effect still present, the 3 DLP chip projector do the best work there´s no rainbow effect the colors are so vivid and real i prefer the 3 chip DLP projector.....one thing in particular the color whel used in the single DLP projector remember the first mechanical color tv set that used a color wheel disc developed by CBS
They have in 3 chip DLP designs which start at about $9000.00 at minum. Better single wheel designs as found in IN83 spin too fast to really detect rainbows even for most people susceptible to them.
Regardless of any bias that I may have, it was obvious in every shot of the two side by side that the DLP on the left was superior in color accuracy, retention, and black levels.
I am viewing this low quality, flash video-based Youtube stream on a professionally calibrated NEC Multisync FP2141SB (used for color-grading on Ratatouille). Any lesser monitor, especially non-adjusted LCD, will have a color bias. But the difference is clear. DLP wins. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong in this case.
I will never buy flat panels, I am about to get a 73" RPTV and will own it for 15 years probably. DLP is so much better, And its digusting that people think flat tvs are so great. Well smaller ones are ok but 50"+ DLP hands down!
They both look exactly the same. These of people were talking out of their asses throughout the entire video."The skin looks pale". Maybe because she's white you fucking idiot!
I own a few projectors and can honestly say you can see very obvious differences between the two and it's less so when captured on video, but even on the video it was clear they didn't look the same. I think you need to get some glasses.
I can't say about this video, but I love DLP coz of many factors than LCD. 1. DLP projectors can be operated longer than LCD projectors. 2. No filter cleaning needed as most of the DLPs have sealed light path. 3. DLP's picture quality remains same throughout its lifespan whereas LCD's imaging panels damages over time.
this isnt a comparison they should have compared 2 approximately equally priced projectors. i just saw the mitsubishi hc7000 and was blown away and thats an lcd model.
it was playing a regular dvd through a matrox parhelia graphics card (rgb) and using powerdvd with hardware deinterlacing as a player. it gave perfect blacks astounding colors amazing detail and much depth. i would like to see them head to head. this comparison was worthless.
One is 1880 Euro's and the other is 1692 Euro's. That's pretty close in my opinion. And just face it, LCD sucks. It hands down is not the best choice for quality whether you're picking a projector or HDTV

LCOS leads the way.
csummy 1 year ago
I take it the DLP is a triple DLP projector and doesn't use any crappy color wheel nonsense?
and because it was popular they discontinued it? and replaced it with the much more expensive SP8602?

This test was utter crap.
anarkistraeven 1 year ago
Wow! Talk about useless test. First of all, try replicating real life scenarios. Most people don't live in a warehouse. Second, running two projectors side by side will clearly affect the overall picture quality since there will be more indirect light bouncing around in the room.
anarkistraeven 1 year ago
@khantko That's the exact same reason I went with LCD. Don't regret it at all. The automatic iris in my Mitsubishi HC-6500 makes a wonderful job.

but nothing will beat my Barco DP100 2K. no XD just a joke i dont have that ^^
i think they had to test the projectors on a much bigger screen because projectors are made to make a big picture.

@cjrizzle93 I have also a led projector, it's a CRE X205 it has PIP & POP functions.

Check out my vids if your interest.

joeldude76 2 years ago
good choice, no matter what people say that flat panel is the best, Well its not, They only say that cause they have one and not a superior Mitsubishi DLP TV.

I am in need of a new projector as of tonight my bulb blowed and I have had my infocus x1 for about 6years and I have decided to just update and get a newer model I have went through 2 bulbs with the x1 and I dont know alot about lcd dlp but I do no that the brightness on x1 was not good enough and fuzzy on certin movies
dustyncarol 2 years ago
There was no suspense here, because it is obvious which one is going to be clearly superior. LCD's exaggerated contrast ratio specs thanks to a dynamic iris cannot match the true and obvious higher native contrast of the DLP, which is apparent in most scenes.
EvilDarkEntertainmen 2 years ago
have a couple of questions maybe somebody can answer.have the Hc1600 dlp ,what would be the best setting for brillant color.and its 720p native but I can force into 1080i and p what resoultion should I run in for best results,I love Blu-ray and want to make sure I get the best image possible

well , dlp works via light , obviously its mirrors on a chip , and mirrors move images as fast as light travels , hence no blur like u get on LCD panels that r inside lcd projectors :)

7031 2 years ago
DLPs have HORRIBLE viewing angles.
silverbogie 2 years ago
Lolwut? I think you mean DLP rear-projection TVs. They are comparing projectors here... the image comes from the front, so there is the maximum viewing angle possible of any screen.
Jezzamezzamy 2 years ago 7
yh man 180 viewing angle or 360 if youve got a screen thin enough lol

10,000 to 1? 15,000 to 1?? my samsung is 3,000,000 to 1
FlUdDeStRoYeR94 2 years ago
you know contrast ratio has been taken as a joke by manufactuers, they just keep pumping it up so monkeys like you think "oh wow this must be good because it has a 3,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio!" Contrast ratio just means that say the darkest pixel is 15,000 times darker than the brightest pixel... use your brain
Xarieus 2 years ago 25
Contrast ratio is important to those who need a true darkness. In theatrical and entertainment design, it is something greatly desired.
deadygoon 2 years ago
@Xarieus that still gives it a true dark color and shadows seem more real.
903harman 1 year ago
@Xarieus yes and also there is not a fixed measurement that is used by all companies, you cant compare two tv's made by different companies cause they each use their own contrast measurement (10000 to 1 by lg, is not the same10000 to 1 by sony)
c0uchsl0uch 1 year ago
Bull Crap there is NO Projector that can do that.
Sn4keD0kkt0r 2 years ago
Its not a projection... Its a LED. Light Emit Diode. Samsung touch of color.
FlUdDeStRoYeR94 2 years ago
well what a load of shit this video is.

IN83 annihilates any Lcos or LCD proj I have ever seen bar none.

man a single DLP projector can reproduce good pictures but the rainbow effect still present, the 3 DLP chip projector do the best work there´s no rainbow effect the colors are so vivid and real i prefer the 3 chip DLP projector.....one thing in particular the color whel used in the single DLP projector remember the first mechanical color tv set that used a color wheel disc developed by CBS
guimbadriver 3 years ago
This video is a load of shit
perisville 2 years ago
umm no
codyb2coool 3 years ago 3
DLP would be better only if they get rid of that darned color wheel.
I perfer 3LCD technology because of color vividness and the lack of rainbow effects, which give me eye strains.
mrairplaneman777 3 years ago 2
Samsung eliminated the colour wheel in 2006 with their LED powered DLP sets.
sofafire 3 years ago
They have in 3 chip DLP designs which start at about $9000.00 at minum. Better single wheel designs as found in IN83 spin too fast to really detect rainbows even for most people susceptible to them.
TexasSizzle 2 years ago
Regardless of any bias that I may have, it was obvious in every shot of the two side by side that the DLP on the left was superior in color accuracy, retention, and black levels.
I am viewing this low quality, flash video-based Youtube stream on a professionally calibrated NEC Multisync FP2141SB (used for color-grading on Ratatouille). Any lesser monitor, especially non-adjusted LCD, will have a color bias. But the difference is clear. DLP wins. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong in this case.

That dlp looked better on my LCd laptop
CRDLIBERTY 3 years ago
I will never buy flat panels, I am about to get a 73" RPTV and will own it for 15 years probably. DLP is so much better, And its digusting that people think flat tvs are so great. Well smaller ones are ok but 50"+ DLP hands down!

I own a few projectors and can honestly say you can see very obvious differences between the two and it's less so when captured on video, but even on the video it was clear they didn't look the same. I think you need to get some glasses.

joeeffect10 3 years ago
I can't say about this video, but I love DLP coz of many factors than LCD. 1. DLP projectors can be operated longer than LCD projectors. 2. No filter cleaning needed as most of the DLPs have sealed light path. 3. DLP's picture quality remains same throughout its lifespan whereas LCD's imaging panels damages over time.
babudhi 3 years ago
this isnt a comparison they should have compared 2 approximately equally priced projectors. i just saw the mitsubishi hc7000 and was blown away and thats an lcd model.
it was playing a regular dvd through a matrox parhelia graphics card (rgb) and using powerdvd with hardware deinterlacing as a player. it gave perfect blacks astounding colors amazing detail and much depth. i would like to see them head to head. this comparison was worthless.
dvh99 3 years ago
One is 1880 Euro's and the other is 1692 Euro's. That's pretty close in my opinion. And just face it, LCD sucks. It hands down is not the best choice for quality whether you're picking a projector or HDTV
