  • brilliant video

  • some great inforamtion here thanks

  • This is a "seemly" video. =p

  • i enjoyed this vid

  • This video is a favorite on Ottawa

  • Yeah, fully controled world, we really need that...

  • Brilliant. We are literally creating a form of AI that will be omnipresent and all knowing... We are creating a God with a hierarchy of little angels, each user of the web being assigned a personal angel bot that will provide feedback on all the things we will do via the web. I'm merging technology with spiritualism! LOL

  • Matrix Skynet is near!

  • The nature of the comments of this video are peculiarly paranoid and irrational. Technological progress is virtuous in and of itself, folks, though what we do with it is a whole other subject. Still, some things will work and some things won't, don't get the wrong idea that humanity should just sit around stagnant.

  • Physicists thought that splitting the atom would open a golden age for mankind. Instead, the psychopathic rulers of the world made bombs with them. The naive scientists and engineers developing all these new technologies have no idea how they will be misused by The Powers That Be.

  • This is going to be great. Soon we will know where every human is, what they are doing, for how long, with what, and who! Where every object on the planet is located, and able to remotely control those objects. The Department of the Homeland Security (I love that name "Homeland", it reminds me of Germany and the Roman Empire) anyways, they will love this.

Image a world where everybody is safe, and the government is safe, and it knows everything about you in real time. We deserve it.....

  • Great job! I love the video quality. Very informative!

  • @ :40 "the planet has grown a central nervous system". Now that is profound.

  • This IoT sounds very interesting from a technical perspective and I can clearly see IBM’s business model behind this but doesn’t all of this reduce a human being to an IP address in a global network that is run by sensors everywhere? There is a tremendous philosophical challenge behind this: efficiency is not a goal on itself if doesn't serve a higher purpose. Will we become happier human beings by introducing this? Will it make our lives more worth living?

  • @Heliosplorer:not "so i can plan my day accordingly" ... so "censors can plan your life accordingly", True if you mean sensor and not CENSOR! These two words are totally different in meaning. Be careful with your vocabulary :)

  • I beleive technology needs to advance, but in a way that doesn't cause us tobecome more dependant upon it. Sometimes technology dumbs us down

  • Looking for a way to get your devices attached to the 'net?

    Take a look at GEOTiQ!

  • @heliosplorer @Sutupi, this isn't so much "Here's the problem and here's the one solution"... This is a "Here's a problem, and here is the way we think it can eventually be handled" I think the purpose of this, above all, is to show people the need, and the fascinating way our world could work - Ultimately to motivate people to contribute and support their perspective.

  • The next medium, whatever it is - it may be the extension of consciousness - will include television as its content, not as its environment, and will transform television into an art form. A computer as a research and communication instrument could enhance retrieval, obsolesce mass library organization, retrieve the individual's encyclopedic function and flip into a private line to speedily tailored data of a saleable kind.

  • we all know how mobile phones are harmful radio waves, but you want to embed radio waves everywhere? We are not stupid! We know the plan of RFID cips. you just want to controll us like dolls!

  • @ionutbreana hmm mobile phones uses Non-ionizing radiation, which isn't too bad actually. But i like the idea of RFID in everything. I actually have RF devices all over my home already. checking humidity in the walls. Getting passed the front door. That sorta thing. I use active GPS for tracking RFID just wont cut it yet. I am hoping for a major improvement on that front and an open system for anyone to use.

  • The sad thing is that IBM is not a human being. It only knows us through what as framework of averaged behaviors that can be tracked and converted into data but as a non-human IBM cannot appreciated the massive subtle and personal variation that makes up the average, IBM is incapable of realizing that intangible quality of life is not corner-stoned in the average but within the edges and extremes that define the boundaries of the average. They therefore move us toward a less human world

  • @scundyzundy Interesting comment. Do you really believe that any company is some entity that is *not* made up of humans? A company is as effective as it's employees allow it to be.

  • informative ... nothing more

  • Not bad comp on how things make life easier for us. Some of the "sensor" talks are a bit outlandish, only to be found in the richest places and newest of things

  • And in France, when they're not on strike, you know exactly when the next bus is coming (and even the next bus after that).

  • LIFE was better in a way when it was much simpler don't you think?

  • When I listen to this I want to curl up in a corner at least a thousand miles away from any cables, sensors, data and information.

  • so good

  • The part starting from "my house" reminds me of Dr. Mark Hall's dream of house-as-cell, city-as-organism in The Andromeda Strain. I see some echoes of Crichton's themes through the rest of the video.

  • Can anyone tell me who did the animation for this video?

  • Besides sensors for scientific data and important logistics, what would be the planets benefit in billions of sensors packed with toxic waste of the future. And talking of relationships, some people call somebody at home to prepare them a bath.I know there could be sensors in intelligent packaging that send me a sms when the milk is going to get sour, but i would have to figure out which of the tons of irrelevant msgs to read first, wait there was one: "You are about to crash. Thx 4 using IBM"

  • I think that this is the inevitable nature of the human animal. Ever since the dawn of time our general goal has been to find more ways to connect with each other and the world.

  • not "so i can plan my day accordingly" ... so "censors can plan your life accordingly", your video is not even mentioning any solution to listen to it actually, you are only mentioning flows created by human for humans. Donno who created that at IBM but he/she has no global vision

  • @heliosplorer Humans are a part of the equation here, as I see it.

  • @IBMSocialMedia .If the human is part of the equation.Do you have now solution in how to determine the exact time at least 1 day prior volcano will erupt or an earthquake, tidal wave, tsunami etc...will alarm to the public that in this area will have a disaster will come on way?????

  • "When we talk about a smarter planet, we can say it has two dimensions. One is to be more efficient, be less destructive..." 4:40

    1) I think you mean "smarter people". The planet was doing pretty well for a while there...

    2) To aspire to be "less destructive" is a pretty good sign that we have a massive design failure.

Those patterns and relationships you talk about there is what ecology is based on.

  • This could be the next facebook. I call dibs!

  • I can't help but see this as dystopian. There may be may amazing things that will come of the Internet of Things, but you would never be able to hide from it, as sensors would be in everything and everywhere. From an art/science perspective this has fascinating possibilities and I can think of ways to incorporate it into my work, but at what social cost? We ultimately capitulate to technology for the good things it does for us and then sell our souls in the process.

  • The technology has to be an our imperceptible extension to feel things that we are unable to interact directly.

  • I love this vid and the idea. the only thing that stops me, is the knowledge I have about the "human being". to keep it short. As nice/positive/handy this is, its also as dangerous, and manipulative in de wrong hands as beautiful it is. Einstein Never discovered E=MC2, to make man most destructive bomb ever to be built. but yet, look what happened. so hoop, IBM wil play a key part in the developing of this system, but keep it corruption proof. LOL, thats a tall order I know, but try.

  • Peter Joseph voice?

  • @Sutupi could you explain further Sutupi? How so?

  • @IBMSocialMedia Where is the line between convenience and helplessness? If all of the information about us and every minute detail of our lives is available in databases and on the internet, who will eventually gain access to those databases and data streams? These are the questions which have not been answered nearly to my satisfaction.

  • @Treddian most of the info is already on the internet, you just don't have software that connects it, or do we?! Nowadays a person with bad intentions can already look you up on multiple unprotected databases. Even if the DBs are protected a good social hacker can eventually gain access to your IRS data (example). Don't be afraid of the future, because it is already here! We just have to connect the dots.

  • @IBMSocialMedia

I guess Sutupi meant that this only shows a human point of view not including the nature part of the planet ... the scary part of it might be the overwelming présence of data flows and sensors, for a maybe-too-much regulated life.

Naïve maybe for the fact that life is not only regulated by humans for humans, and must consider planet as a playground which actually make us live.

  • how can i download the video???

  • sounds good... but even though I will sound out of topic saying the following I am afraid that soon, I might drop out of my house and feel being OBSERVED by security cameras and intelligent devices systems that control public spaces and just cancels the freedom of experience and the freedom of the individual !!! just perhaps... or perhaps NOT ?!

  • Erg leuk!

  • Dystopian?

    "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman...

  • great video

  • This will be the last step for any totalitarian government to be able to monitor, control and manipulate citizens for every little step they make. Nice video, I agree, but a terrifying future if you ask me.

  • "A matrix of services" -- umm.. didn't 'they' make a movie warning us about this..? ::sigh::

  • They day you are told to expect the bus to arrive you are controled - be warned !

  • Sounds like new world order to me

  • Great video! Very good explanation of IBM's Smarter Planet concept.

  • @marcelsantilli - Good video? Production quality? Yeah maybe.. Good, though? For whom? Good for corporations that will profit excessively from installing the infrastructure and developing the closed software to monitor it all. This vision has many flaws. Ask any tribal or indigenous person if this will be good for them. I guarantee you they will chuckle with ab$urdity..

  • patapon!

  • then the government dont like you and cut you off , you can do nothing , soon people will think your crazy if you use cash then credit card, so you will only be left to die

  • you are the gouvernement.

  • @Justien its Government*

  • very cool vid!

  • I like the theory but you seem to have taken the human element out of everything. IBM was talking about this back in1993 with Louis Rossetto from Wired the intelligent house and appliances etc but the reality is very different. the fact that there are millions of people doing the same things means you can't make adjustments the way you describe. eg you have already set off half an hour early because of the queue for the ferry. etc etc.nice ideas though. Duncan

  • (probably) so many work put in the animation, and then the editor forgets to turn on title-safe?

    Interesting vid tho!

  • Very good!!

  • Very interesting video :)

    Loved it.

  • Que falta faz um diretor de arte...

  • Skynet?

  • lol

  • here we go, IBM

  • Stunning...what strange things the near future hold--and what of humankind? Shall they think or will consideration of the past, present, and future be the labor of devices that will do our bidding, but not attribute feeling. Perhaps an approximation of feeling, but nothing organic. Nevertheless, stunning and intriguing. Five stars assuredly.

  • Cool and scary at the same time

  • Wow. Very interesting.

  • Don't be impressed. This is where they are wanting to control how much power you use, what temperature your house is, etc.

  • Plus the planet's not saying anything. We are. The "planet" is just plain dumb.

  • You know what would be reeeaaallly smart? A functional speech recognition and processing like in Star Trek; IBM: You've got something to do!

    :)

  • This was interesting and fun, but I get the feeling this kind of networking will be more useful for work addicts than it will be for people who like to just live day to day and enjoy life. I was more convinced of that notion when I saw the video was made by IBM.

  • Great video, I really like the imagery used in it. Good work!

  • Very nice work, smart and poetic. Is there any chance having it translated in French ? Need a hand for that ?

    RWW France

  • fantastic editing.... brilliant

  • Insightful ideas, presented creatively, but missing the human touch. Knowledge, networks, information is about people creating, sharing, informing, making the world a better place.

  • In the first place, growing a "nervous system" does not imply brewing inteligence. Also the "network" shown in this video much more tightly resembles sponge's nervous system than, say, an insect's one. Finally, most of the 'foreseen' capabilities are already achieved today without buzzwords ( as noted by ricardoferrer1983). Smells like ads...

  • "Expect to be told when the bus will arrive"? They've obviously never been to Germany

  • These "minutes-to-arrive"-displays are also installed in austria and several other countries. But they aren't really accurate, are they? You'll be able to see the amount of meters, the next bus is away. Or you'll be able to actually see it on a map.

  • This video does *not* explain "The Internet of Things". All it does is offer a thinly disguised advertisement for the great things IBM purports to be able to do.

Come on, there is more to the world than being "smart" the IBM way. There are love, emotion, the lot. You know, IBM wants all of us to be "smart" but people love to be just plain silly. Wake up, IBM!

  • Love it.

    N

  • Eye-opening and well presented. Great work!

  • I love the video but like to mention: There was a time when humans did not need devices "to hear the planet talking to us"

  • @Reimixx yep.. This video is full of little hints about where advanced societies are heading.. If all of this comes true, our brains will soon be of very 'little' importance.. P.S. I hope I'm not the only one concerned about those "little agents"

  • @Reimixx I concur 100% However I also know that that was never really possible in the Cities. Cities are not where we need to live to be in tune with nature.

    Well said.

  • @Reimixx What's that supposed to mean? Example?

  • @Reimixx just powerful psychedelic mushrooms?

  • @Reimixx

    When was this time?

  • @Reimixx There was a time when we didn't know how to write things down either.

  • @Reimixx and I dont' think there were sewers and plc operated water mains running underneath massive city infrastructures back then either. There was also a time when you just needed to give your transportation food and water. Now you need an oil lite. Same difference.

  • great!

  • love it

  • As an IBMer, I'm very proud of this, not only for George's work in producing this, but the intelligence and clarity with which Mike, Andy and John explain the Internet of Things vision at the heart of Smarter Planet.

  • @IBMIBV - The production is impressive, but this plan is nothing new.. Tim Berners Lee has been pitching linked data for years.. Semantics.. etc. The human element is completely absent .. and what's up with the little "intelligent" godCloud that pops out from behind the curtain, rains a little "I know what is right", over the triangle and then disappears like the Lone Ranger, off into the great unknown.. What's that representative of?

  • @vaXzine right on, i bet no two people on the planet agree on what "intelligent" is! and whats up with the cloud' god

  • Great Internet of Things Movie !!!
