I must have been 10 years old when Elton released the album The Fox and even at that young age I loved this song. Now I'm 39 and I love it even more. I can't tell you what I wouldn't give to see this performance live. Thanks for posting this!!!!!!!
@POTRILLOMR the guy who owns eltonscafe did a very good job of writing sheet music for this song. Just do a google search for his website and you'll find a whole host of Elton sheets :)
@05pricej Thank-you! Lost some of my EJ sheet music in a flood when we lived down south. I'll definitely take a look so see if I can recover what was damaged/lost!
@POTRILLOMR , @Treebard The Parent Company is Universal: 825 8th Ave., New York, NY 10019 - just note in bottom left corner of envelope what it's regarding and it will be directed appropriately. The Parent Company & address remain the same regardless of how his label changes (ie- Island, Rocket, Polydor, etc).
Nice to see these videos again - to answer some of the questions posted over time, yes the conductor is James Newton Howard. The concert is indeed at the Royal Opera House - but it's not their orchestra. The orchestra is that of the Royal Academy of Music. I was a second year there in 2002 - and am playing bass clarinet here.
@dsanfordcasey Cool!!! Do you appear in any closeups??!! :) The RAM orchestra is amazing!!! I have asked for this DVD (Dream Ticket) for Xmas. Wow, amazing!!!!
oh my goodness, I love this song SO much. I have that dvd box set "Dream Ticket" that has this disc in it, and I always play this one about five times in a row when I watch it. To me, it perfectly describes the ebbs and flows of life in song... I dunno. It's just amazing. Simple as that.
It's 2 separate pieces actually, that run together. "Carla" is the first bit (no idea who Carla is, but oh well) "Etude" is the 2nd, which means 'study' (many classical composers wrote Etudes that are played as concert pieces, but really were written for the pianist (student) to work on one particular aspect of playing (dynamics, arppegios, etc)
When I saw this on TV and on the DVD, I couldn't believe my eyes. I always thought the two pieces went together perfectly, so years ago, I spliced the original recordings of "Carla/Etude" and "Tonight" together *exactly* the way Elton did them here on a cassette tape. I've been enjoying "Carla/Etude/Tonight" for close to 20 years, and now, as if he read my mind, Elton has done it, too. I have to wonder if he had done these songs like this before this performance. I guess GMTA! ;)
One of the most beautiful instrumentals ever written, wonderfully orchestrated by james newton howard, once again elton shows us his immense talent for composing and playing. Sensational!!!
Following the requests, I've uploaded the second part of the video (which is "Tonight"). This video comes from the concert at the ROH of London, and can be find in the DVD "Dream Ticket". I hope this part two won't be rejected this time.
Just heard tonight the second version his voice sounded much improved and he was actually trying to hit the higher notes. I am sorry they removed it when was this concert??? His voice was harkening back to when he could really sing...
Who is conducting the orchestra in this performance? James Newton Howard was conductor on the original version of this instrumental (heck, he even played conductor on the 1986 version from Sydney, Australia).

@POTRILLOMR The composer is ELTON!!! :)
Don't know where the sheet music is, though. You could contact Elton John's company, Polydor, I think it is.

Oh another thing, in case you were wondering: "Carla" goes until 1:49, then transitions to "Etude"

Anyone else notice that almost every young girl seen in an orchestra or professinal choir is totally gorgeous?
