POOR, PRETTY NANCY CLUTTER!! I MEAN IT! THE ACTRESS PORTRAYING HER IS BRENDA CURRIN, NOT AS PRETTY AS IN THE SHE WAS IN THE FILM, BUT STILL PRETTY SHE WRITES "MY HANDS AND FEET WERE TIED"!!!
I first heard about the Clutter Family Murders in high school in a class I took. We read the book then saw the movie. Ever since then I've been so interested in Capote and the Clutter Family story. I bought the book and have probably read it over 100 times. Capote had such a great mind!!
I live in Wichita, KS....this story still happens but he was the first one to make people realize it happens. In New York it would be another day....but when you add the "seasonings" of bigotry and traditionalism (republican) views.....for a people that don't want to change....you find a sad, but true, story.....
Exactly - Bill had all the advantages compared to Perry. Maybe Bill wasn't wealthy but he was in a loving family, athletic, intelligent, poor but never destitute. Perry was abused, neglected, and lead a tortured life. I felt sorriest for the family - imagine Bonnie hearing the 3 shots and knowing what must have happened.
@bexisfab Of course you did. Even though he killed absolutely nobody and Perry did all the killing. But the way Capote portrayed Perry, he was almost like a marauder (but he was actually just a murderer).
In Cold Blood shows that no one is safe from crime, and that trusting people are taken advantage of. Moreover, he shows that Americas image of a civilized society is faulted by mans uncontrollable primal urges. Capotes view of America as a dysfunctional society is displayed in his novel through his negative portrayal of the judicial system, the vulnerability of genuine people, and some individuals indulgence of their ids.
A documentary on the Clutter murders is difficult to find. You did an admirable job. I read the book the first time in 6th grade and have been interested in this case since then.
Regardless of Truman's motives in writing the book, it was an amazing story and made an incredible movie about the tragic deaths of the Clutter family; a story I believe should have been told showing they were real people with real lives that were senslessly and horribly cut short. Dick and Perry were guilty and deserved to be put to death. Many are against the death penalty, but I cannot imagine if a family member of mine were murdered, what I may do to the murderer(s)...I'd be out for blood.
$2,000,000 he made off the senseless murder of that poor family and the hanging of the perpetrators. It's the best thing that could of ever happened to the bastard. Death is a huge industry. Look at all the Books movies and TV that cater to the sick ass's that go in for such fare.
I just finished reading it. I became interested in it after I realised one of my favourite songs -Bad Religion Honest Goodbye was inspired by it. It's a really strange book, whether the death penalty is the answer I have no idea, I got goose bumps after they were hanged and the book ended. Somehow I felt bad for feeling bad for the convicts.
I am sure Truman Capote would have vomited at your fascist remark. Go and read the book, and then post remarks. If you have read it already, well, I am afraid you need to read it again.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what? to drugged to notice you're a fascist? That only shows how badly you need to read him!! For your information, one of the running themes of the novel is a protest against the death penalty
you cant even think straight, nor express yourself. Who cares about string theory anyway...we're talking about justice here. I am no lefty, Dick and Perry killed and they deserved punishment because no one has the right to kill and that includes the government. Of course, I believe that they should have been given life imprisonment even because they were a danger to society. But killing them makes a mockery of the law itself.
I've seen both the movies ("Infamous" was the better one in my opinion.) It's amazing how far the tragedy spreads when something like this happens-even to Capote himself since he never finished another novel.
I wondered also why they used a different house, and so obviously not the real house; but they also did not have the character 'Nancy Ewalt'...she was named something else.
I wonder why the movie 'Capote' shows such a different house. In the movie it's a two-story farmhouse, taller and more narrow. This home looks to be two story, but much different design.
@psatm The first movie was filmed in the actual house which the suriviving Clutter daugthers had sold to a third party. Nancy's horse Babe was also in the movie. Other locations in the movie---where the killers stopped for gas, to eat dinner, to buy the rope, etc. were the real locations. The courtroom scenes were filmed in the actual courtroom and 7 of the original jurors were in the jury box.
I first red the book In Cold Blood in high school, more than twenty years ago. The book grabbed me then and it's been a story I cannot get out of my mind. A horrible, unimaginable tragedy made for a great read, a wonderful movie and a reminder of the precious lives that were lost.
I visited a friend in Garden City and drove to the home, What an experience... stopped at the driveway of Chinese Elms.. I expected much more, but the small towm of Holcomb is as it is... Like nothing happened. Kind of strange to me, but very Mid-west... Can't explain the experience...
fabulous work... you just saved me a trip... i mean this place is almost as mythical as dorothy's house... doesnt quite seem real.. you did a great job... this tragedy occurred while i was in the womb and the film moved me even as a child.. thanks!
Great presentation and treatment of subject! I have read almost everything Capote wrote except for IN COLD BLOOD. One of the best American writers of the last century--in my opinion. And probably a genius as evidenced by his earlier writing.

If you want to watch the whole of this 1967 film adaptation, you can now on my youtube channel - though it's divided into 9 parts, sorry.

SO hard to see this familt slaughtered by these madmen. It breaks my heart to see Nancy Clutter begging Perry Smith (Robert Blake) not to kill her.
I, too, am a fan of Capote's.

@danbeatless I loved the book "In Cold Blood". It was really sad and eerie but a very good read. Really reminds you of how lucky you are to be alive.
