@iOfflineAU No, the ABC has never broadcast anything over 720p, not The Gruen Transfer, not David Attenborough documentaries or anything, they physically cannot broadcast any higher than 720p.
The problem as I see it is this, the ABC broadcasts in 720, and brands it "High Definition" when it is in fact Standard Definition, and Australian's have come to know so and accept it. However, Channels like One HD, Seven HD, and Nine HD actually do broadcast in 1080i and brand themselves accordingly
@ummjw The reason why the commericial TV networks can use 1080i HD is because they have only one extra channel each. For ABC TV to broadcast in 1080i, they would need to ditch ABC2, ABC3 and it's simulcast of ABC1 digital location 2 and the equipment to broadcast it.
Can't wait for this channel but the promo's have been running since Thursday Afternoon does anyone know when it's launching at all? Finally something like Sky News but on Freeview Can't wait!!! :)

What you see when you watch ABC1, 2, 3 of "HD" is in fact what is called "Standard Definition". I suggest you are confusing 576i with 720p and 1080i & p lines.
So we will not be losing a "HD" channel, nor will we be gaining one, as ABC News 24 will also be broadcast in SD, also know as 720p.

I hope that ABC News 24 does regain its independance and rebuild the quality and trust that was once unrivalled.
Good looking set. Hope the Breakfast set and colour scheme change to something more like this. Good sounding music - much better than the new music on ABC Newsradio. All in all, a very promising venture. Already it's looking better than Sky News! Contrary to Sky and it's supporters in The Australian, this is exactly what the ABC should be doing.
