@bigd53224 I guess you don't remember Lenny Bruce circa 1955. He was the first ever stand up comedian to be arrested for using the word c*ocksucker on stage.
You know, although I have to admit that it IS kinda weird seeing Richard without his trademark moustache (and his profanity, for that matter! LOL!), you can still see the beginnings of his actually putting a lot of acting into his stand up performances, you know what I mean?
The entire time I was watching this, I kept expecting to hear a curse word come out of his mouth lol...but I had to keep reminding myself this was family television. To me, it's not really Richard Pryor unless curse words come flying out haha!
I like him clean. This was very funny to me.... I love silly stuff though, so I'm sorta easily amused, but also amused by stuff others think is just dumb... maybe I'm just weird. Oh well.
To bad this guy turned out to be a Crack Head drug addict that couldn't stop doing drug's and showed his people it was ok to do drugs and wreck everyones life they new . : (
With all due respect, I assume you never met Ed, nor was ever invited by him to appear on his show. Ed did not b-list Mason. The industry did. Mason refused to defer to the acting producer when given the signal to stop his performance. Mason KNEW that what he was doing was unforgiveable & unwisely continued overtime, using valuable stage NATIONAL stage time prescheduled for others on that fateful day. The last time I was with Mason I was working borscht the belt in PA circa 1993.

His crisp delivery and perfect timing was more of a mix between Flip Wilson and Bill Cosby. This was 1966 and that style and timing is classic, still holds up today, it just depends on the audience, host and all the comics who set the tone for the room before you take the stage.
watching this really reminded me of Krama from Seinfeld (Micheal Richard's character) You can defiantly tell Pryor probably had an impact on Micheal Richard's psychical type of comedy
While Richard Pryor was doing Cosby-style material on TV appearances and places like the Latin Casino and Vegas showrooms, he did the raunchy comedy he ultimately made his name with in black "chittlin' circuit" clubs simultaneously.
with out the swearing he has to be carefull here,, he is so funny when he is free to say what he wants ,, awesome awesome cat ,, GOD BLESS YOU MAN,,xx
Love Richard, he made amazing racial jokes. It's sad how people whine about racial jokes now a day... Fucking hell, I'm white, ridicule me but let me ridicule you. Simple, rofl.
This is the G rated Richard Pryor. Somewhere between 1967-1971 He began to achieve his Genius. He came into his own, was no longer like Bill Cosby. I love Bill Cosby, but Mr.Pryor exposed his nervous system for all to see, that is the most courageous thing any one artist can achieve. Richard Pryor is the Marlon Brando,Charlie Parker of stand up comedy. D.Platt
@stella3265 Bill Cosby is very original as well but I think Richard got a little of his style from Redd Foxx. At least the foul mouth bits which I understand Foxx did going back into the late 50s.
@stella3265 A really minor point, but I think Lenny Bruce is closer to the charlie parker of comedy. I would argue Pryor was less improvisational, or, at least, less defined by it. But I in no way disagree that he is legendary and brilliant.
@alteregoash Well Richard Pryor was the Marlon Brando of stand up comedy. Pryor improvised better than any stand up comic that I have seen, on video or in person. Bye
comedy is a learning carrier, while they laugh (audience) he is finding himself and growing into his mature self. it's a lot of hard work and a joke can take 3 months to develop. A great comedian, Richard found THE way to let himself out of his own restrictions, his funny is speaking his mind and he looks good from beginning to end Richard was Good medicine for a troubled world.
@TheNotoriousTOM This is before his act became what we know and love today, when he was still doing Cosby's style of comedy. It would be over the next 1-3 years after this that he changed into his mature style.
And to think, if Ed Sullivan had known how off-color (if that's the right word) Richard Pryor would turn out to be, he would have blacklisted him so badly that the world would never have had that comedian to enjoy. What a strange world we live in.
@andyandymax A polite point of FYI: Ed Sullivan had very little influence, if any, regarding the guests. That was neither his job description nor his responsibility. He was the host, nothing more. That said, I do miss the show.
@somthinjustaintright - You've heard of a man named Jackie Mason? Ed Sullivan ruined his early career by blacklisting him, and he couldn't make a comeback for decades. Ed Sulivan was, in his heyday, the most powerful man in the entertainment industry. There is no question that he blacklisted people, and supported the anti-communist blacklist.
