Jars of Clay are still recognized a bit by the rock world (more of the indie circles that are open to all sorts of rock music) because of their debut album from the early 90's which was musically exceptional. To them, good music is good music. I saw a review of a more current CD in a secular indie music zine a few years back and was pretty surprised. Now they didn't mention a word of their faith and did not care. I just pray that artists will not ashamed of Christ or hide their light in their l
I used to listen to rock music nonstop...obscure underground bands of all sorts from the 80's and 90's, music was my everything. When I became a Christian Holy Spirit led me to give it all up and most of what I enjoy the most is older hymns and worship songs because they are usually soaked in scripture and the truths of God instead of the ME ME ME focus of x-ian music today. I just hold on strongly to the words and they strengthen my faith so greatly!
@stop08it Amen! Same here :) I used to be all about metal, but God turned me around when He saved me about three years ago. I love hymns too. I don't know if you'd like them, but you can check out Kenosis and King's Kaleidoscope. They are two Christian rock bands that mostly play old hymns, with a modern sound. You can get some of their tracks for free on the Mars Hill website
@obw1r3d That's so wonderful! Praise the Lord! God knows the power of music and what is going on behind the scenes when we don't. He's such a merciful and loving God who is FOR us! Also thanks for the recs, I'll definitely check them out..
@stop08it i think you might in particular, enjoy the blog i write. i just finished an entry entitled 'the gospel' about how the Lord has pursued me via music...for years...as a fervent agnostic, even.
It sounds logically what he says but I know testimonies of people becoming possessed because of anti-Christian music. NOT bands that are openly satanic (those aren't popular) just regular rockbands with lyrics that promote an anti-Christian livestyle.
dcTalk's "Free at Last" and "Jesus Freak" were the best Christian albums EVER made, even atheists loved it. Audio Adrenaline and NewsBoys had some great stuff, too.
@lakebay972 Wow, thanks for that. I know if the Athiests love it has to be bad theology. Now, I know why I don't listen to, too much DC Talk anymore or if any at all. Of course within my few couple years of growing in the Word, I use to listen to alot of bad Christian music, or even wolves in sheep clothing pastors, but I kept reading the bible, I went seeeee--yaaa! :) (lol).
I never understood that kind of burning. Usually those kind of things occurred in churches that knew nothing about genuine Christianity. They were churches that basically preached moralism. Nothing on the doctrine of God. No expositional preaching. Nothing even basic on the atonement. No preaching on even the fundamentals of the faith. Just moralism. At least that was my experience in the churches that did those things in my area.
. .of course modern christian church music, namely the stuff they sing in churches is slop. they think that cultural excellence is sinful. of course i regard rock music as itself mindless noise.
but it is a different kettle of fish with the greatest classical composers.
KISS and ACDC? a load of empty superstition even if their music does bore me to death
I was told at a Christian school the AC/DC = Anti-Christ death to Christians and Kiss = Kings In Satan's service. Ha ha.It's good to hear that some preachers get it.
@weslaw19912345 Go to the village church website and search for the sermon on homosexuality. I think that's the title. For some reason it won't let me post the link.
@johnnnyboyz100 Matt Chandler=great preacher. This podcast is just a fragment of the WHOLE sermon, if u would listen to all of it u would understand what he is trying to say..he talks about when u listen to "worldly" music like 24/7, then christian music is kinda lame to u..an how in the 70's & 80's (when DC talk what pretty big and he's in his 20's) he was use to listening to worldly music all the time, so their music was like out dated and lame to him..which is pretty common with teenagers n
I remember listening to Ozzy Osbourne while my Christian friends condoned it and tried to tell me aboput Christian music like Amy Grant. You are so right. Thank God now Christian music rocks!
@arnoldthejedi72 "DC talk was and is the Michael Jackson of Christian music."? see, now that just sounds musically ignorant TBO (not trolling, just trying to help you out in the future) none of them could touch his singing or dancing with a 39 and a half foot pole (I'm not even a fan, just being realistic)
This is the most unloving and critical pastor I've ever heard. Which is fine. But about 00:24 into it, he basically just damned himself to hell. Making fun of dc Talk is the only sin God doesn't forgive (it's in the Bible). Poor guy.
dc talk has caused far more life change and honest love for jesus christ in their time together than whoever this matt chandler individual will in his entire life. if your truly going to preach a gospel of acceptance and good news then i would be more careful regarding the examples that you use in your talks mr. chandler. stick to the scripture and leave out your sarcastic criticisms please.
Mr. Chandler, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@priamel Well, he's free to his opinion. I was a part of many DC Talk concerts that were sold-out at some very big venues. DC Talk was iconic within the Christian music industry in those days. If Matt wants to be critical of them, he better bring more to the table then "horribly written songs" when the evidence proves otherwise.
If u guys can look up john todd, he explains how the rock music was of the accult and how they got it in the churches. Before u respond look up john todd exposing the music on youtube.
I am guessing Matt Chandler never heard of bands like Bloodgood, Sacred Warrior, Saint, Leviticus, Jesus Freaks, Stryper, Living Sacrifice, Scarlett Red, Vengeance, or Messiah Prophet. If he is going to say that most Christian music was lame in the 80's compared to Metallica, then he needs to educate himself on all the Christian metal of that era that was overlooked.
@Rawk4Life Living Sacrifice are awesome!! (sorry from reading these comments, it would appear none of you have a clue how much good christian music is out there..)
I love Chandler, but why use 1:30 of time when you are supposed to be PREACHING THE WORD to simply criticize Christian musicians (btw I agree with his points; Christian music was really bad) and give your opinion on the matter. The pulpit is not for opinions or attempts to tear down, it is for the proclamation of the word.
@LettheNationsBeGlad No offense. But as someone who is trying to find the lord. It's little segments like this (mentioning Metallica, ACDC, etc.) that seem to keep me involved...I fear that sometimes (and HAVE with most pastors) i would tune out...and therefore miss the most important message. This is a smart tactic.
satan main grift before his fall was the gift of make music and i tell you now that he is still useing it to destroy the masses and even the church of god. when christian rock first came out the churches was rejecting it because they new it was not of god and that rock was a special designed music from the satanist accult to get in the churches and destory the minds of the children of god. And when you get to the mind you mess and win it over get destory the soul.
@aajs777 I think most Christians with the Holy Spirit know not to listen to secular music. Chandler offers nothing but confusion on this issue, and he will have to give an account for that. However, rock wasn't created for Satanism. It was developed, mostly from black artists, and the enemy found a way to use it... just like he finds a way to use everything.
If you wouldn't listen to it with Jesus in the room, don't turn it on. If it glorifies sin, don't listen to it.
@Smiilez03 Contrary to what you assume, just as I feel like secular music doesn't glorify Christ, I equally feel the same about the television shows, books, and movies, which is why I abstain from many genres (and I love a good horror film).
Christians should not listen to secular music that glorifies any sin or they are sinning. It's pretty clear.
@takitheterrible Ok fair enough. I only asked because I feel like a lot of Christians like to generalize secular media as evil when I, for one don't feel that it's the case. If it isn't glorifying sin then what is the problem with it? Like, would a Christian not want to watch "The Pursuit of Happyness" or "Hotel Rwanda" because the name "Jesus" isn't mentioned? What about a love song that isn't idolizing who the singer is talking about? That's what I'm wondering about..
@Smiilez03 Hotel Rwanda is a conscious movie that tells a truth-based story. A secular song that is a love song that falls in line with scripture teaches about love is RARE.
A Christian listening to most secular music is the equivalent to watching pornography, not Hotel Rwanda. When a band glorifies sin (note at the word "glorify") it is wrong, and I can tell you most to nearly all secular music glorifies fornication, drugs/alcohol, perverse language, and the god of self.
music cant save no one and music is just emotions running. we need christ and christ is all we have. he draws us not music and if anyone thinks the old music is boreing thats not good because that just shows how they are crying out for something that moves the fleash and not the soul. this new music today just messes with our emotion and never helps with our soul.
Eh... I'm trying to stop listening to secular music because it doesn't glorify Jesus and the lyrics are contrary to the Gospel. I don't care about quality. I care about my soul.
@takitheterrible That's fine if you aren't a music lover but what about the other 90% of the earths population? Quality is important. A long time ago, people with talent, be it academic or artistic, came to the church to study. Now the church has let those things fall into that hands of the secular world, artists & academics are looking to the world for knowledge. Academics & artists run our schools & culture is it any wonder why this world is becoming increasingly anti-God? Think about it. :)
@lockdown260 I love music. I never said I didn't. I said most secular music doesn't glorify Jesus. Therefore, there is no reason for me to listen to it.
Michael W. Smith has amazing musical compositions from the 80's & 90s, but is modern stuff... not so much. Perhaps you don't like his style and arranging (I don't like his voice), but his chord progressions, chord voicings, melodies, etc. are outstanding and are far more sophisticated than much of secular music. But I agree, a lot of Christian music sucks! Don't judge music based merely on one or two dimensions of it.
It really sucks when you go to a church and the whole thing just seems to be aimed at women; flower arrangements and girly love songs with feeble and pathetic lyrics about how 'you're feeling' and how 'in love you are'. Many men feel uncomfortable in that enviroment. A lot of churches are afraid to bring across the power and might of Jesus, who is not just a God of love but also a God of wrath and destruction.
@daystatewaspe1 I don't understand why a guy would feel embarrassed about talking about how in love with Jesus they are. Our culture has rather asinine views of gender.
@daystatewaspe1 said "A lot of churches are afraid to bring across the power and might of Jesus, who is not just a God of love but also a God of wrath and destruction."
That's an ridiculous view of gender. The fact that this is connected to Christian music and gender is rather sad. His wrath and destruction do not abide on us.
@daystatewaspe1 I agree with you on a lot of points there. The only thing that I would like to point out is that, yes, God is a God of wrath and destruction as shown in some stories of the Bible. But never does it claim that he IS wrath and destruction. The Bible does, however, claim that God IS love.
We must stand against secular music and false Christian music. Our Christian music should be anything from theologically sound hymns, to old gospel tunes like the The Kingsmen, to new gospel music like Lauren Talley, to worship music like Laura Story, Chris Tomlin or Casting Crowns. The music MUST be reverent with its tune, and Biblical in its lyrics. Toby Mac, DC Talk, Philips Craig and Dean, Newsboys, Third Day are examples of what it should not be. Check their theology people. Amen!
I have nothing against you not liking what you call "false Christian music", but calling it that is the same thing as judging the salvation of someone else, and that in itself is sin. The music they write comes from the heart, and their hearts cry out to God.
"For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
Sound is just another outward appearance. God judges their heart. Hope this helped :)
@guit4rplay3radam No my friend, it is not a sin. If you do not have God right, you do not have God. Theology is your view and belief about God. Most Americans cry out to an idol god they have made up in their minds.
@GuitarHero2790 No, if you will listen closely he does not like people making music that claims to be Christian when its a lame mockery of what the world puts out. He even says back then he would not have traded his secular stuff in because that other was lame. Matt Chandler and his church are VERY careful with their theology, especially in music. Also, when you listen to any kind of Christian music, listen and you will hear theology. It will be good or bad. The artists too have a theology

@OneFaithMinistries Listen to the Lyric of Toby Mac and u'll see that it's biblical and i heard the testimony of this guy and he is radical for God so don't write names.. Also u can't judge the tune,i have a friend call Flame he's a popular christian rap artist and he's on fire for God and a good friend of Paul Washer, now maybe u think that rap is a good tune or maybe not or maybe an other christian think that rap is from the world so who's right? we need to be careful on our judgement.
@OneFaithMinistries@OneFaithMinistries@OneFaithMinistries@OneFaithMinistries Who, Toby Mac? Toby Mac got saved in a christian camp after going to a church a few times, he felt convicted and he asked the pastor how to receive Jesus in his life... What about his song, i don't want to gain de whole world and loose my soul.. I just say that bc we MUST be careful when we talk about someone and i don't want to fight with words now, i just want people to be clear when they do statement on people..
@mrcrazy777 There is the problem. We DO NOT "receive" or "accept" Jesus. What happened to the message of Repentance and Faith? Hmmm??? He is Roman Catholic. His songs do not chant the gospel message even though he may weave something form the Bible in a chorus every now and then. He makes Jesus look like some cool accessory. "Jesus Freak" as he likes to call himself is not of God. We are the elect, the bride of Christ, disciples, the redeemed, and slaves of Christ. Repent and revere God
@OneFaithMinistries Listen, of course it's a work of God but when u are not converted, its natural to ask question like this, i was not talking about the words in itself, i was talking about that he was convicted of sin... Ok if u really think that he's a roman catholic, i don't care.. even people that have a reputation to be godly are maybe not in their closet so i can judge him neither in bad or good.. Anyway, we are bother in Christ, stay close to Jesus, it's more important than this..
@mrcrazy777 Im going to call you out and rebuke your statement here. We as believers are not to make judgement? That's not Biblical. The Bible repeatedly tells us to discern good from evil, to test all spirits, to make wise judgments, and to call out all untruth. I don't know where you get this "feel good, everythings cool" message, but its not in the Bible. There is ONE Lord, ONE FAITH, and One Baptism (Ephesians 4:5). John tells us that if we don't have God right, we dont have God at all
@OneFaithMinistries Excuse me brother, the way u react, u need to think about ur attitude, u don't even know me and u make statement like this, i didn't say anythiing about u but u tell me to repent, come on, what would Jesus do? He will never react the way you do but that's ok, i don't want to go any further on this like religious people... I'm not going to reply on any messages. God bless ;)

@mrcrazy777 SCRIPTURE ALONE. GRACE ALONE. FAITH ALONE. CHRIST ALONE. GOD'S GLORY ALONE. Stop following your preferences and making an idol "god" up in your mind that fits in your box and trust in the one and true God of the Holy Scriptures. Repent and Trust in Christ. Good Day to you. If you want to continue this, or take a look at some of the information that reveals what is behind this unGodly music, send me a message.
@OneFaithMinistries Tell me this, then. I go to a Church in which some of the music you deem "fake" is played. We STILL worship God with all of our hearts. If anyone has their theology wrong, it's you. Worship is not rooted in music! Worship is rooted in a connection with God!
Also. The term "accept" when used here is talking about FAITH. Don't get so caught up in YOUR religious views that you lose sight of the RELATIONSHIP that has been built through Christ. Religion leads to trying...
@guit4rplay3radam Brother, we need more people with your heart in the Church. Because it doesnt matter what view you have. It matters what the heart is: if it's being molded by Christ, everything else will follow. We worry so often how sound our theology yet dont balance it out with enough "Am I walking in step with Christ?" This walk with Christ is more simple then it sounds. Matthew 6:31-33... that's our answer to "What do I do with _" fill in the blank.
@OneFaithMinistries not to sin. Faith and Relationship with God lead to seeking forgiveness and change of heart. We will never be perfect while on this earth, but we sure can try. That doesn't come of our own doing, though. That is the holy spirit working in our lives! You can question my "theology" all day long, just know this. God is at work in my life. God loves me. I am his. I'm not so worried about being right that I lose myself, I'm letting God speak to me.
@guit4rplay3radam My friend theology is your view of God. Therefore your theology tells me just about everything I need to know about you and your faith. Matt Chandler would agree. Good Day.
@hunter7754 No, Westboro Baptist's are NOT Christians, but neither are the homosexuals. And according to your words and God's Holy Scriptures, you aren't either. Repent. Good Bye.
@RoyalStrings Yes, I know that verse. But the question is, what does that mean? Do not take a couple of verses out of an entire passage to make up a theology, base you thoughts on the entire passage. We must repent and trust Jesus as Lord and Savior. We are salves of Christ. Have a nice day.
@OneFaithMinistries It means those who receive Him have the right to be God's children, simple as that. So the biblical fact is yes, we do receive Him, and when we do we are God's children. Of course, there are other Scripture that tells us how we are God's children, and they should be looked at as well.
No Scripture taken out of context, no verse-only theology, just saying what Scripture say and keeping it simple. To say something else is to contradict John 1:12-13.
@RoyalStrings My friend, you have left our the most important part. REPENTANCE. The Receive Him as Savior, we must repent of our sins and trust in Him alone. Then we receive His salvation. Repentance and Faith. Good Day.
This is hilarious and so true!!!

I love Chandler, but why use 1:30 of time when you are supposed to be PREACHING THE WORD to simply criticize Christian musicians (btw I agree with his points; Christian music was really bad) and give your opinion on the matter. The pulpit is not for opinions or attempts to tear down, it is for the proclamation of the word.

satan main grift before his fall was the gift of make music and i tell you now that he is still useing it to destroy the masses and even the church of god. when christian rock first came out the churches was rejecting it because they new it was not of god and that rock was a special designed music from the satanist accult to get in the churches and destory the minds of the children of god.
If it glorifies sin, don't listen to it.
takitheterrible 3 months ago
@takitheterrible Do you read secular books?
Smiilez03 2 months ago
@Smiilez03 Contrary to what you assume, just as I feel like secular music doesn't glorify Christ, I equally feel the same about the television shows, books, and movies, which is why I abstain from many genres (and I love a good horror film).
Christians should not listen to secular music that glorifies any sin or they are sinning. It's pretty clear.
takitheterrible 2 months ago
@takitheterrible Ok fair enough. I only asked because I feel like a lot of Christians like to generalize secular media as evil when I, for one don't feel that it's the case. If it isn't glorifying sin then what is the problem with it? Like, would a Christian not want to watch "The Pursuit of Happyness" or "Hotel Rwanda" because the name "Jesus" isn't mentioned? What about a love song that isn't idolizing who the singer is talking about? That's what I'm wondering about..
Smiilez03 2 months ago
@Smiilez03 Hotel Rwanda is a conscious movie that tells a truth-based story. A secular song that is a love song that falls in line with scripture teaches about love is RARE.
A Christian listening to most secular music is the equivalent to watching pornography, not Hotel Rwanda. When a band glorifies sin (note at the word "glorify") it is wrong, and I can tell you most to nearly all secular music glorifies fornication, drugs/alcohol, perverse language, and the god of self.

takitheterrible 3 months ago
@takitheterrible That's fine if you aren't a music lover but what about the other 90% of the earths population? Quality is important. A long time ago, people with talent, be it academic or artistic, came to the church to study. Now the church has let those things fall into that hands of the secular world, artists & academics are looking to the world for knowledge. Academics & artists run our schools & culture is it any wonder why this world is becoming increasingly anti-God? Think about it. :)

Don't judge music based merely on one or two dimensions of it.
philosophy7575 4 months ago
It really sucks when you go to a church and the whole thing just seems to be aimed at women; flower arrangements and girly love songs with feeble and pathetic lyrics about how 'you're feeling' and how 'in love you are'. Many men feel uncomfortable in that enviroment. A lot of churches are afraid to bring across the power and might of Jesus, who is not just a God of love but also a God of wrath and destruction.
daystatewaspe1 4 months ago 21
@daystatewaspe1 I don't understand why a guy would feel embarrassed about talking about how in love with Jesus they are. Our culture has rather asinine views of gender.
@daystatewaspe1 said "A lot of churches are afraid to bring across the power and might of Jesus, who is not just a God of love but also a God of wrath and destruction."
That's an ridiculous view of gender. The fact that this is connected to Christian music and gender is rather sad. His wrath and destruction do not abide on us.
takitheterrible 3 months ago

Amen!
OneFaithMinistries 5 months ago
I have nothing against you not liking what you call "false Christian music", but calling it that is the same thing as judging the salvation of someone else, and that in itself is sin. The music they write comes from the heart, and their hearts cry out to God.
"For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
Sound is just another outward appearance. God judges their heart. Hope this helped :)
guit4rplay3radam 5 months ago
@guit4rplay3radam No my friend, it is not a sin. If you do not have God right, you do not have God. Theology is your view and belief about God. Most Americans cry out to an idol god they have made up in their minds.

@OneFaithMinistries @OneFaithMinistries @OneFaithMinistries @OneFaithMinistries Who, Toby Mac? @mrcrazy777 There is the problem. We DO NOT "receive" or "accept" Jesus. What happened to the message of Repentance and Faith? Hmmm??? He is Roman Catholic. His songs do not chant the gospel message even though he may weave something form the Bible in a chorus every now and then. He makes Jesus look like some cool accessory. Anyway, we are bother in Christ, stay close to Jesus, it's more important than this..
mrcrazy777 5 months ago
@mrcrazy777 Im going to call you out and rebuke your statement here. We as believers are not to make judgement? That's not Biblical. The Bible repeatedly tells us to discern good from evil, to test all spirits, to make wise judgments, and to call out all untruth. I don't know where you get this "feel good, everythings cool" message, but its not in the Bible. There is ONE Lord, ONE FAITH, and One Baptism (Ephesians 4:5). John tells us that if we don't have God right, we dont have God at all

If you want to continue this, or take a look at some of the information that reveals what is behind this unGodly music, send me a message.
OneFaithMinistries 5 months ago
@OneFaithMinistries Tell me this, then. I go to a Church in which some of the music you deem "fake" is played. We STILL worship God with all of our hearts. If anyone has their theology wrong, it's you. Worship is not rooted in music! Worship is rooted in a connection with God!
Also. The term "accept" when used here is talking about FAITH. Don't get so caught up in YOUR religious views that you lose sight of the RELATIONSHIP that has been built through Christ. Religion leads to trying...
guit4rplay3radam 5 months ago
@guit4rplay3radam Brother, we need more people with your heart in the Church. Because it doesnt matter what view you have. It matters what the heart is: if it's being molded by Christ, everything else will follow. We worry so often how sound our theology yet dont balance it out with enough "Am I walking in step with Christ?" This walk with Christ is more simple then it sounds. Matthew 6:31-33... that's our answer to "What do I do with _" fill in the blank.
james12921 3 months ago
@OneFaithMinistries not to sin. Faith and Relationship with God lead to seeking forgiveness and change of heart. We will never be perfect while on this earth, but we sure can try. That doesn't come of our own doing, though. That is the holy spirit working in our lives! You can question my "theology" all day long, just know this. God is at work in my life. God loves me. I am his. I'm not so worried about being right that I lose myself, I'm letting God speak to me.

stop twisting scripture and making it say what you want it to say..
It says nothing in the bible about having to listen to christian music if you're a christian.
As for this "ungodly" music, we all have our own opinions on what is ungodly..
someone might say a band is ungodly because the band members aren't Christians, therefore, they automatically labeled them as a satanic band.
stop jumping to conclusions and misinterpreting scripture

Joh 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
Joh 1:13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
RoyalStrings 3 months ago
@RoyalStrings Yes, I know that verse. But the question is, what does that mean? Do not take a couple of verses out of an entire passage to make up a theology, base you thoughts on the entire passage. We must repent and trust Jesus as Lord and Savior. We are salves of Christ. Have a nice day.
OneFaithMinistries 3 months ago
@OneFaithMinistries It means those who receive Him have the right to be God's children, simple as that. So the biblical fact is yes, we do receive Him, and when we do we are God's children. Of course, there are other Scripture that tells us how we are God's children, and they should be looked at as well.
No Scripture taken out of context, no verse-only theology, just saying what Scripture say and keeping it simple. To say something else is to contradict John 1:12-13.
RoyalStrings 3 months ago
@RoyalStrings My friend, you have left our the most important part. REPENTANCE. The Receive Him as Savior, we must repent of our sins and trust in Him alone. Then we receive His salvation. Repentance and Faith. Good Day.
