Like all things it's a matter of preference. I love the discord in their music. Though, back to my foremost statement it's preference. So, if you hate it, stfu.
some people insult sonic youth, but if you understood how ahead of their time and complex yet simple their music is, you might realize how influential it was, when im in a sonic youth kind of mood, it just blows my mind what their music gives off
@Bendrix27 For immature fuck like you life must be a struggle. Getting your ass kicked all the time? If you're from Toronto, let's meet up, then you'll tell me everything you want to.
Seriously? HAHA, now who's trying to act tough behind the screen? You sound like a fucking preschooler mate, I'm surprised you know how to type. Go get another ass raping from your brother you braindead fuckwit.
@Bendrix27 Pixies were more of a inspiration on Kurt.Sonic Youth inspired him to though. The heavy slow heavey slow thing,no flashy bass lines. Was totally a Pixies thing, that Nirvana took from.Minimal bass played a key part to there sound.
@flmvdvsrg Do you know anything about the music scene your talking about? Kurt was inspired & friends with the band, Sonic Youth helped get Nirvana signed & they toured together taking notes. It doesn't matter if Courtney Love was inspired by them, the relationship & history with Kurt happened first. Coldplay is a safe by the numbers grandad music that just sparingly has an 'edge' band although I admit to owning the first four albums and enjoying them but i'm objective enough to admit the truth.
@Bendrix27 They moderately inspired Nirvana, the biggest inspirations were The Stooges and Pixies, and Coldplay is a shitty Radiohead knock off without the same imagination or creativity that Radiohead has
@SubliminalBen Were they really inspired by the Pixies? I mean they were sort of contemporaries, and if anything Sonic Youth were actually around earlier than the Pixies were.
@Bendrix27 Of all the shitty bands out there you pick Coldplay?
Like Green Day Coldplay were cool in the 90's until they decided to wear their
little rockstar outfits, and the lead singer's a douche. They lost alot of respect from people and artists. It doesn't change the fact they've written a ton of good songs.
You're right. Sorry about the hasty generalization. Eminem's good, I'm just not really into him. I've been listening to a whole lot of OFWGKTA these days, though. Along with a few other indie rock records.
It's sad but they covered the emotional aspects of the disease... It's a horrible disease to have.. most people who can't maintain it with medication are often committed to institutions. The chords in this really go under your skin.. And when Kim vocalizes I start to cry... Freaking beautiful..
@SinisterKid187 Even though this is completely irrelevant pertaining to a Sonic Youth video.., you referred to all other rappers as rubbish, other than Drake and those other two. But Eminem isn't rubbish. He is the furthest thing from 'rubbish'. Don't ever make generalizations, because you could be wrong.
ROFL.......... EXCUSE ME SORRRY........ PSHHHHH LOL R U SERIOUS??? U THINK KANYE & JAY Z R RAPPERS?!!? WTF IS THIS WORLD COMING 2?! LISTEN TO TUPAC & WU TANG CLAN & EMINEM IF U WANT GOOD MAINSTREAM RAP BUT ALL THE DOPE SHIT IS IN THE UNDERGROUND THESE DAYZ MY FRIEND
i honor sonic youth all day. their musicianship is a potent blend, and is very rare to for a group of musician friends to naturally culminate today with all the egotistical distractions as well as electronica.
I like me some Sonic Youth every now and then,I can relate to this song.My Grandpa has schizo,I'll always love him for being a vet to this country,he's nice, smart and kind guy.I love the fact that he's still with my Grandma,46 years they've been married together!!!
@TheAnimalking123 I dated a rapid cycle bipolar chick that was going off her meds, this song reminds me of her often. I am bipolar as well, though I am smart enough to take meds, otherwise shit gets too fucking weird. I know a few people that are schizo and all have been pretty nice. I see em at mood disorder meetings. There are a lot of misconceptions about people with mental illness. Pretty sad... And wow 46 years is a long time. Good for them, a nice thing in this era.
@Scrikeush No, it wouldn't be fucking stupid of me to assume you were just trolling, primarily because a shitload of people actually like Sonic Youth. I would understand why you might not like it; however, let me ask you something: What's the point of you actually getting on this video? To bash a band? Or to prove that you just heard Sonic Youth for the first time. Also, BVB? I loled when you said that. Doesn't mean I'd get on one of their videos to say they suck, though :P
@Scrikeush Who the fuck is BVB? Black Veil Brides? Those idiots? Dude.... Sonic Youth were pioneers and were and still are a great influence on many artists. This song is great imo.
@NAllen828 I would tend to agree if I didn't hear so soooo sooooooooooooo much of the Velvet Underground in their music. Filtered through Wire and The Fall. imo
@MrShotgunJesus Well clearly, if you can't stand them... You're right, grunge isn't an emotion. It's an experience that only some people enjoy.... You clearly aren't one of them. Sorry. Got a bit carried away there. Just Nirvana are amazing so... :P
duude, this is so awesome! and im not trying to spam or anything, but theres an equally awesome portuguese band majorly influenced by them called Linda Martini, check them out. The lyrics are in portuguese though, but they are pretty good xD
@cordfluidnevoie yes afraid it was the junky league, sorry, if you think i'm wrong then thats your opinion, guess it comes down to individual taste, i've always loved Nirvana, i've never heard a Sonic youth song that I could listen to over and over again, nothing that even comes close to the songs on Nevermind then again i've not heard many of SY's songs, maybe you can prove me wrong
@electricEntity81 Woahhhh. Seriously? You're saying Nirvana isn't in THIS league. I really see it the other way, man. I don't see how this is even close to the level of Nirvana. I'm not trying to flame, I'm just curious. Why exactly do you think that?
@KVHelwig1337 yeah maybe I should've worded that better, I actually meant the opposite and was responding to some of the other crazy comments. Yeah i'm with you Nirvana were a way better band
@electricEntity81 No way man, I know it's all subjective, but Sonic Youth released this shit back when mullets, jumpsuits and MC Hammer were about. It's 2011 and I still think this is ahead of its time. 2:44-3:44 takes me to another dimension!
I'd like to thank the 1980s for Poison, White Snake, Great White, Skidrow, and all the other awful hair bands. Without them there is no Pixies, there is no Nirvana, there is no Sonic Youth. What a sad world it would be.
@MrGumSoul I thought it was even earlier than that - and the Pixies in mid-80s, too. But your point is well taken, so I'll clarify. To me early SY was much too punk rock - especially the vocals. They didn't really come into their own until Daydream Nation, which was designed in a direct response to the crap I listed earlier and is one of the earliest examples of what we think of as alternative rock (unless you count VU - which I kinda do). I guess I should have been more clear and less cute.
@albertcamusjr whattt?thanks to all those bands there would be sonic youth.if that is your truth .well i can get some facts straight for you first.sonic youth is been around since the early 80's.they made a debut on 1981.pixies and nirvana maybe are really to pay their credits to the bands you just mentioned.so who ever gave you thumbs up must really not know that sonic youth came out first than all these bands.
@bengativo6 This has already been addressed. "Your point is well taken, so I'll clarify. To me early SY was much too punk rock - especially the vocals. They didn't really come into this sound until Daydream Nation, which was designed as a direct response to the crap I listed. DN is one of the earliest examples of what we think of as alternative rock (unless you count VU) and the other bands I listed are derivative of the sound SY conjurred with DN."
@albertcamusjr mmmm punk rock? no way sonic youth is sonic youth .and the league is somewhere around alternative and indie rock.but punk .rock nah.there is no labels for sonic youth music. confusion is sex ,bad moon rising evol.sister and dd nation are not punk rock not close where i could see.cheers man
@bengativo6 I didn't say they were punk rock, but they were certainly influenced strongly by it. Death Valley '69 was released in '85 and you can still hear the punk in the vocals. Their first album was released on a punk rock label. They toured in the early 80s primarily with punk rock and other lo-fi/no-wave bands. Daydream Nation is nowhere near punk, I agree. There are labels for SY. "Greatness" for one.
@albertcamusjr wait because they were influenced by them ironically or un-ironically? Because I don't hear that much in the Pixies or Nirvana. I can't say anything about Sonic Youth since I don't really listen to them.

@electricEntity81
The Diamond Sea...the short version if you're not in an avant-garde mood.

@electricEntity81 Woahhhh. Seriously? You're saying Nirvana isn't in THIS league. I really see it the other way, man. I don't see how this is even close to the level of Nirvana. I'm not trying to flame, I'm just curious. Why exactly do you think that?
KVHelwig1337 9 months ago
@KVHelwig1337 yeah maybe I should've worded that better, I actually meant the opposite and was responding to some of the other crazy comments. Yeah i'm with you Nirvana were a way better band
electricEntity81 9 months ago
@electricEntity81 No way man, I know it's all subjective, but Sonic Youth released this shit back when mullets, jumpsuits and MC Hammer were about. It's 2011 and I still think this is ahead of its time. 2:44-3:44 takes me to another dimension!

I'd like to thank the 1980s for Poison, White Snake, Great White, Skidrow, and all the other awful hair bands. Without them there is no Pixies, there is no Nirvana, there is no Sonic Youth. What a sad world it would be.

@albertcamusjr except for the fact that sonic youth started in 82....?

@MrGumSoul I thought it was even earlier than that - and the Pixies in mid-80s, too. But your point is well taken, so I'll clarify. To me early SY was much too punk rock - especially the vocals. They didn't really come into their own until Daydream Nation, which was designed in a direct response to the crap I listed earlier and is one of the earliest examples of what we think of as alternative rock (unless you count VU - which I kinda do). I guess I should have been more clear and less cute.

@albertcamusjr all those bands rock!
audiescooter 5 months ago
@albertcamusjr I concur, but the it was a close call there in the mid 80's because Poison, White Snake, Great White, Skidrow almost had us.

"Greatness" for one.
albertcamusjr 5 months ago
@albertcamusjr wait because they were influenced by them ironically or un-ironically? Because I don't hear that much in the Pixies or Nirvana. I can't say anything about Sonic Youth since I don't really listen to them.

@broncosrock16 less "influenced by" and more "reacted against"
albertcamusjr 5 months ago
@albertcamusjr Haha okay good that's what I thought you meant, just had to make sure I wasn't missing something. In that case, I totally agree.
