  • Don't you just wanna look at it!

  • i´ve got a piece of aerogel!

at the moment i am holding it in my hands

    it´s just amazing...

if you want to get some, just use google. or sometime there are small pieces at ebay...

it is expensive but it is worthwhile itself

    simon

  • poke it! poke it!

  • its actually harder than you think it would

  • This material is knowed for more than 20 years ago.

  • actually even more than 20.

Steven Kistler from College of the Pacific did it for first in 1931.

  • it is aerogel

  • man, i just wanna hold it.

  • SILICA AEROGEL, DUHHHHH!!!!! if u slightly pinch that thing, it will burst into tiny pieces like sand

  • oh oh.... glitch in the matrix

  • Can someone give me a link of where to get some? Or a website name.

  • looks like a soap to me

  • LOL...go on, admit it -you were tempted to swipe it weren't you!

  • It's not smoke just looks like solid smoke. It's only a bit more dence than air and a few gram a brick size could hold up a car.

  • As long as things strike it at high speeds or not squish it it will not shater... but its still to me a wonder of mankind I mean come on 99.8% AIR!!! Thats like comparing styrophoam to cork

  • brittleness is the inability to resist impact...it doesnt mean its not strong...eg. u could whack it with a shovel and itd smash, but what if you spread it onto armor plating and subjected it to a HEAT round. well it survived it...thousands of dollars or an anti tank rocket in my chest? ill pay for the bloody stuff.

  • Museum isn't lying =P says 'developed' by NASA, which is true - using it as insulation for the Mars mission in 11 years time. It was first 'discovered' in 1931, yeah. Result of a bet between science buddies =) pretty trippy stuff =)

  • Apparently new uses are being found for this stuff all the time. Just read a very interesting article about it in the Times Online. Check it out yourselves.

  • That museum is lying, aerogel wasn't developed by NASA, it was invented in 1931--well before NASA was around.

  • Was made accidently through a lab dare in 1931. A scientist was dared into taking the liquid within a gel and replacing it with gas.

  • It was invented in 1931, but it had far lower qualities than this, NASA developed (Improved) it, making it less brittle and more flexible.

  • you could get a tube of it for 30 dollars... yes its very expensive?! its only expecive compared to currently plastics and metals, which you could get the same amount for a couple of cent.

  • You can't buy it in a tube. You buy it in a plastic container and it's like a piece of styrofoam, and fyi, for a piece around 1.5 inch cubed, it would cost you $160... So God knows where you got your information from.

  • Actually you can buy it in a tube. I just did.. got around 25 small pieces for $69. Generally you get only small fragments in the tubes though. If you want a single big piece you have to pay a premium.

  • obviously you got your information from lifeson99's video "Aerogel-Lightest, Most expensive stuff in the world"

and god knows where that tard got it from.

  • can u buy this stuff?

  • Its actually very strong, can hold 2000 times its own weight. But as said above also extreamly brittle as in it shatters when hit.

  • what is xD?

  • i think its like a smiley

  • Its like a cube of smoke xD and costs like millions

  • i wouldnt say it costs millions man at most thousands for a pretty good sized chunk.

  • whoa thats awsome how hard is solid smoke?

  • I never had it in hand, so dont know

  • VEEEEERY light and fragil, i've heard it feels as though its no even there...

  • Similar to styrofoam, just much lighter and MUCH more brittle.

  • @Nostalgic92 feels like glass apparently
