I regard Paul McCartney (The Beatles) and John Deacon (Queen) as the two best bassists in rock music. Because both of them didn't just stay with root notes, they actually played the song melody on the bass
I think you pretty well nailed it. And yes - I agree with other posters: McCartney is a musical genius. I think his melodic bass work was one of the fundamental keys to the magic of a Beatles song. Macca didn't just play the root notes of the chords John and George were throwing down. He typically made the underlying bass progression a melody of its own. Listen to his counter-melody in "Being For The Benefit of Mr. Kite". Sheer genius.

Great job! I watched your cover of the Paperback Writer bass line as well, you jam dude! I think PW and Rain is the definitive Beatles single as it is the most experimentive without going too far into psychedelic and crazy sound scape, and you just about perfectly captured Paul's melody, funk, and tone. Rock on man!
Paul has said that , with regard to this period of time where he was evolving in leaps and bounds as a bass player, that the inspiration behind it for him came from Brian Wilson and specifically Pet Sounds.
Now, I understand how people would listen to what I just said and then play Pet Sounds and and be confused, thinking that that they really dont hear any bass parts...
Most of the instrumental parts of Pet Sounds and Good Vibrations were done with session and studio musicians...... the small key fact that sepparates the Beatles from the rest: they played their own instruments and called for studio musicians to AUGMENT their standard 4 instrument setup. In fact, I remember watching an interview with the woman who played bass for the Beach Boys on Pet Sounds. You would never know or hear of her. Good bass lines in that album, but Brian didn't lay them down.
it's true, but he's always been a great bass player and even though i don't think that "with a little help from my friends" is their best song that is paul mc cartneys best bass line! he carried ringo in that song! if it was a three legged race paul would have been dragging ringo along the ground across the finnish line lol... there are many bass players out there who are technically better but none that were more inventive?
Paul didn't want to play bass but had to after Stu Sutcliffe left the group in 1960. I think after a while he thought I'm going to play a melody dammit even if it's on a bass!
You are right. Paul started out playing the guitar and back the bass position in a band wasn't exactly a coveted position. If that's changed it's because of McCartney. I know as one who has played the guitar for years, I have greater appreciation for the bass thanx to PM.
Super job! You're a super bass player. McCartney's bass lines are certainly original and unique. If you listen closely to his bass line in this song it appears as if McCartney's having "fun" with the song. Listen closely and you'll hear that he's following Ringo's drum beats with his bass. At times right down to the exact beat. You can clearly hear close to the end of the song after the final pause, but he does it throughout the song. It's great.
the lines are perfect, but if you want to make the sound close to the original, use a foam mute in the bridge and use a pick near the neck, that way you make the punch in the bass line, also try flatwound string, mccartney usea all of this techniques, because he used a rickenbacker bass, that has the mute incorporated un the bridge and he always use a pick
I agree, paperback writer, Rain, Help, I Saw her standing there. all amazing bass lines. but for some reason everyone always thinks of him as a singer, not a bassist
lol, forgot those, but really every bass line he ever made was good in its own way. the rain one is awesome because theres no other bass line like it.
I'll preface this by saying you are a really excellent bass player and I love the covers u've done of the great Paul.
I must commend you on this effort too, BUT I also must opine that it is really not very close to the subtle greatness Paul produces. You'll know what I mean-the subtle notes that are not easily discernible to casual listeners that Paul is so masterful at, particularly in this song--and the impeccable control of perfect timing that was another pillar of Paul's greatness.
Macca started as a guitar player only taking over bass duties reluctantly when Stuart Sutcliff left the band. As a result he uses a pick 99% of the time. In the past 30 years I have never seen any footage of him playing bass without a pick. At the end of the day its horses for courses
That's correct Paul has said that back then the bass players were the fat guys who stood in the back. This also explains why Paul plays bass more like a lead instrument making for such creative memorable bass lines
It's very good as far as getting the notes right goes, but I can't say "10 out of 10" because Paul actually played with a pick -- if you could get a tone like that while using a pick, THEN I'd say "10 out of 10".
But I'll say "9 out of 10". ;)
And I'll give...4 stars.
You lose half a star for the fingers and half a star 'cause Ibanez are fugly.
I think what you mean is "playing bass with a pick was unheard of back in the '60s."
And that would be the most stupid thing I've heard in my life.
I've watched the videos, several of them repeatedly, since I was barely 10. They've been my favourite group for over 20 years and I've READ that he uses picks and I've READ about how he usually holds them. Not being able to see it clearly doesn't mean it's not there. I personally know a guitarist who has a similar grip where you barely see it....
Also, if you listen on "Anthology 1" there's a real early song, I think it was the early version of "One After 909" where they stop playing because Paul's finding it hard to do without a pick.
Additionally, after 1965, he tended to "direct inject" his bass in studio recordings. Also I saw a bass forum with claims that he usually used the neck pickup and turned the treble control down. I tried something like it myself once, sounded similar.
Great job man. you were pretty much dead on. Wow! I didn't realise how complicated Pauls basslines were. Well I knew this one was up there, but still didn't know it was THIS complex
Awesome. The Ibanez looks harder to play than the hofner looks like because of the thicker strings. That means if you can play that--which you certainly CAN, then you will kick butt with a hofner!
dude does it matter it depends how you play either you suck or you dont ok so he is good with this bass it's his decision on what he plays but yeah get a hofner nikola or a copy
look ibanez is stupid. and the hofner and the rickenbacker has unique sound. and that's just my opinion. look I have a hofner and it sounds exactly like the song, this sounds close playing the right notes but needs the hofner to get that sound.

There was a 2 week period in April 1966 where I personally think Paul catapulted up to a higher level of bass playing.
During this 2 week period the Beatles recorded 3 songs..
PaperBack Writer, Rain, Taxman
What do you do think?
Is this not a major turning point for Paul as a bassist?
