This piece by Couperin is pure magic. It is played beautifully here. The guitarist, John Williams, performs a wonderfully paced version of the same music with all the moving parts singing. Too fast and the majesty is compressed or tensed, too slow and the maze is lost.
This is easily the best reading of this I've yet to find on YouTube. Never heard of Scott Ross, either. When the bass kicks in around 2:00 (peau de bouffle stop?), it feels like I'm one of those varieties of small dog that you can half-hypnotize by stroking them between the eyes. (Sorry for the image. Sincere, though.) Thank you Very much for re-uploading it.
Just discovered this via my music appreciation course. I've always loved the harpsichord more than my own piano, but they are so rare to come by. Thank you so infinitely much for including a download link. Next, I will want sheet music, but I won't burden you with that.
Scott Ross' interpretation is by far my favorite. I really dislike how some performers tend to play the piece a little too "Romantic" by trying to add too much "feeling" or a swing/jazz like tempo. Scott' Ross' interpretation is the best.
To the person looking for Scott Ross' CDs, there is a DVD of Scott Ross, a master class and also the complete Scarlatti Sonatas (34 cds in all!)
My favorite interpretation of this piece for all times. It's the benchmark for me when I try to play the piece! It's also not simply just another great piece played by genius Scott Ross, but also the piece itself immediately creates a feeling of pureness that connects you with to outer world at an extremely intense introverted point of view.
Thank you for sharing this, Eleasis. Scott Ross is sorely missed. I've managed to find only one of his CDs, a Scarlatti. I don't think he plays this too fast; many people play it too much like a dirge. Scott Ross has it about right.
everything is so perfect : Scott Ross was such a master ; I love the way he taught as well , if you haven't seen his lesons , check it out : he teaches a young frenchman player and an italian too
my personal opinion is that this is too fast. I love it when pieces are played slowly and with more emotion. But whoever played this is EXTREMELY talented nonetheless
this version is close to the one I had years ago on a box set, but I remember it being in 3 parts and getting faster and more insistent , which no version on you tube seems to have
Perfect! Absolutely, positively..... PERFECT! Some of the performances are so slow and they 'slog' through the mud barely able to move. This performance has life.
When I hear this composition makes my day full of happiness and hope, I can walk in my mind in old french gardens, Versalles Jardins and be amazed of how wonderful can be the human experience of being alive. Thanks for sharing.
Thnks for this beautiful performance!

Wonderful interpretation, the best I personally know. Scott Ross - What a great and unlucky musician.

@daniel15671 Scott Ross was an amazing harpsichordist. I don't believe there is another performer that rivals his interpretation of this piece.
