Guys, Melkor took a "beautiful" form only once during his existence in the Middle Earth and it was only when he was trying to befriend the elves for personal reasons and it didn't last that long. In his usual form he's effing huge, and while personal view of him may vary since everyone imagines him differently, I'm pretty sure he isn't supposed to have wings, pointy ears, nor does he lie around posing like a naked model. He's ugly.
@Antonellamalabela well you arent entirely correct... he was beautiful for all his time in the void, and during the Ainulindalë. he only took his dark presence shortly after he came to middle earth.

One thing that pissed me off is that Melkor basically gets his butt whooped by Ungoliant when he refuses to give up the Silmarils. Hell this is the most powerful being in Ea, how can he be defeated by a spirit in the form of a spider?
@CommanderGene Because Ungoliant wasn't just a spider, it was the very personification of darkness, a void of which absolutely no light whatsoever dwelled - as such the darkness is more powerful than Melkor. Tolkien depicted spiders as corrupt, perverse creatures of darkness, rather than just oversized arachnids.
I know, I remember it mentioning something about Ungoliant also gaining much power from devouring the light in Finwe's jewels. But still, she used to be a servant of Morgoth, which means she should be inferior. Plus, I might be wrong, but I think by the time Melkor destroys the trees he still didn't disperse much of his power into his servants
To me Melkor is the best villian within any tell. By his malice, cunning, and within the worlds of J.R.R., 'designs.' I cannot tell nor think of any villian who changed the lays of the world, yet taint creation itself as he did within fiction. Phuck, He Who Shall Not Be Named, or Count Oalf. Melkor is original, gritty, and powerful.

Valar are actually based on Greek gods: Manwë- Zeus, Varda- Hera, Ulmo-Poseidon, Mandos-Hades, Aulë- Hephaestus, Lórien- Morpheus, Yavanna- Demeter, Nienna-Hestia, Tulkas-Heracles or Ares.
Cronus was cast to Tartarus like Morgoth was cast to the void.

Melkor once lived side by side with other vala... The music simply reflects his entire or early story. Also, why should evil be represented by for example more rock/metal-ish music?

@Tundragrass He's not "mentioned", he's the main antagonist of the Silmarillion and the Children of Húrin. There's also lots of stuff written about him in the essays and stories of the History of Middle-Earth series.

In a way that does make sense but it is also different, as Sauron was a lesser Vala, like Gandalf and Sarumon, who was corrupted by Melkor before the world was made. So in essence Sauron is like a lesser fallen angel. However Sauron was not Melkor's representative on middle earth as Melkor sought to dominate Arda himself. Sauron's rise to power was long after Melkor was cast into the Void by the other Valar.

@teshanovic1 Technically, it IS a god. The Valar are like the pagan gods of Norse Mythology while Eru is the over-god of Christianity. He just combined his religion and his culture to tell the tale of creation in Middle Earth, probably because he thought fondly of both, instead of just one.

We should consider Sauron a selfish asshole to his fellow Maiar more than trying to make an argument for him being more or less powerful. He wasn't Morgoth's bitch, he was his right-hand man, who fell from grace because of his selfish weaknesses. Remember, Sauron was able to deceive Morgoth himself, because "The Deceiver" was so bloody cunning. Sure, he led an earthly existence, taking Morgoth's lead casting aside his own kind, , so he could be boss. His flaws are pretty out in the open.
@p0L1Tix I think Sauron was an elf or a man, and Melkor destroyed the great lamps before any other beings besides Ainors lived, which means Melkor became evil before Sauron was even created. When Melkor became Dark Lord, all beings had "awakened" already, so that is when Sauron became his right hand man.

A theme repeated throughout the Simarillion (with Morgoth) the Lord of the Rings (Sauron) and even the Hobbit (Gollum) is that the bad guys sink so far into evil that they lose the ability to look like 'people'. Melkor lost his human form after being attacked by Ungoliant, I think. Sauron lost his after the Downfall of Numenor. And Gollum lost his because he refused to leave his man-cave. This led to discord and strife in the themes of the music, which became the beginnings of evil in the world. By analogy, Lucifer sought to make himself as influential, or so the bible says. Tolkien was a devoted Christian themed writer.

An absolute control over the Arda(world) and all beings was Morgoth's purpose on the Arda. Morgoth was the strongest of Valar, he had god-like power. Morgoth isn't anything like some fallen angel satan. Tolkien based the Valar on Greek Gods.

@giygasisgiegue Sorry. Melkor was an Ainor, the first beings created by the LotR god 9whoever they belived in, not including any people who serve Sauron, b/c they belive Morgoth was a god). He also was a Valar, the 14 Ainors who moved to the continent acoss the sea, Aman. No things non-Valar were allowed in Aman except for a few species of elves who "awakened" in Aman. The name of the LotR world was Arda, and the Valar wanted to change it. Melkor had different ideas, and that led him to evil.
I think that is Saruon, not Melkor. Sauron was fair once, but could no longer assume a fair shape after his physical body was repeatedly destroyed and his spirit corrupted. Morgoth originally had no shape, but in the Similarillion he could change into forms that represented nature. iirc, his original performed form was actually a giant mountain.He took the form of a large humanoid but could no longer change after he used up his powers to alter creation (such as creating orcs).
melkor didnt really look evil he just wanted to ruin things and cause chaos just cuz he was evil doesnt mean hes ugly he was actually described as one of the fairest of the valar
I hate when people try to put a human face to something like Morgoth, it just doesn't fit. The only picture I like here where he isn't wearing his helm is at 2:07 , the rest just are not evil enough. And the pictures like at 1:59 where it just shows a guy wearing a bunch of spikes and a sword made of... spikes gets annoying. It's so " insert generic evil guy here" and Tolkien's Morgoth/Melkor deserves so much better.

Started reading this book. And I must say i've read more of the pre-amble than the actual story. I've only done two chapters but I could safely say that I imagined melkor looking a little like 0:27 but in his later day perhaps more like some of the armoured illustrations.
No mention of sauron yet other than some pre-amble about enemies, when about's does he come into the picture?
...As to all the controversy on here (don't shoot me!) I always pictured Morgoth as being...not precisely ugly, but not precisely beautiful. According to the Silmarillion, most of the Vala are highly capable of scaring the living daylights out of mortals just by looking at them. They take on the shapes of humans, but they're just a little...otherworldly.
So I see Morgoth as scary, yes. Terrifying. But not hideous. Why does he have to be either gorgeous or an Orc?

About Melkor being beautiful: At the beginning, when Illuvatar created the Valar and all of Middle Earth he was indeed beautiful, but with a evil touch. Melkor always worked against the Others. You can compare Melkor with the christian view of Satan.
It is in our love & respect that we go back for roots. But what is more powerful than our own roots? Because somewhere our family trees unite. We go back to the origin of the conflict. The Summoning is really a great band. I enjoyed the drawings but wonder why in some of them they make Melkor look Elvish with pointy ears. The drawings are all over the place so no one can really establish what Melkor looks like because one is such a stark contrast to another. I guess he thrives in mystery.

Tolkien makes it hard not to root for the baddies at least a bit. IMHO he was at his best with the antagonists and antiheroes. Many of the good guys - discounting some - were much less developed and interesting (and awesome) as the darker characters.

Guys, Melkor took a "beautiful" form only once during his existence in the Middle Earth and it was only when he was trying to befriend the elves for personal reasons and it didn't last that long. In his usual form he's effing huge, and while personal view of him may vary since everyone imagines him differently, I'm pretty sure he isn't supposed to have wings, pointy ears, nor does he lie around posing like a naked model. He's ugly.

@CommanderGene Because Ungoliant wasn't just a spider, it was the very personification of darkness, a void of which absolutely no light whatsoever dwelled - as such the darkness is more powerful than Melkor. Tolkien depicted spiders as corrupt, perverse creatures of darkness, rather than just oversized arachnids.

To me Melkor is the best villian within any tell. By his malice, cunning, and within the worlds of J.R.R., 'designs.' I cannot tell nor think of any villian who changed the lays of the world, yet taint creation itself as he did within fiction. Phuck, He Who Shall Not Be Named, or Count Oalf. Valar are actually based on Greek gods: Manwë- Zeus, Varda- Hera, Ulmo-Poseidon, Mandos-Hades, Aulë- Hephaestus, Lórien- Morpheus, Yavanna- Demeter, Nienna-Hestia, Tulkas-Heracles or Ares.

In a way that does make sense but it is also different, as Sauron was a lesser Vala, like Gandalf and Sarumon, who was corrupted by Melkor before the world was made. So in essence Sauron is like a lesser fallen angel. However Sauron was not Melkor's representative on middle earth as Melkor sought to dominate Arda himself. Sauron's rise to power was long after Melkor was cast into the Void by the other Valar.

We should consider Sauron a selfish asshole to his fellow Maiar more than trying to make an argument for him being more or less powerful. He wasn't Morgoth's bitch, he was his right-hand man, who fell from grace because of his selfish weaknesses. Remember, Sauron was able to deceive Morgoth himself, because "The Deceiver" was so bloody cunning. Sure, he led an earthly existence, taking Morgoth's lead casting aside his own kind, , so he could be boss. His flaws are pretty out in the open.

When Melkor became Dark Lord, all beings had "awakened" already, so that is when Sauron became his right hand man.

A theme repeated throughout the Simarillion (with Morgoth) the Lord of the Rings (Sauron) and even the Hobbit (Gollum) is that the bad guys sink so far into evil that they lose the ability to look like 'people'. Melkor lost his human form after being attacked by Ungoliant, I think. Sauron lost his after the Downfall of Numenor. And Gollum lost his because he refused to leave his man-cave. He rose up against God, and seeked to rule, like Melkor did against the One.Tolkein though my friend, didn't use any bible influecence. He loved god, and didn't want to offend his faith. Tolkien may use Bibical influcences in order to make a good middle earth myths.

@Daniellmapp I think he did use some biblical influence. Also i see much resemblence between Sauron and Lucifer. Ambitions of power drove both of them to evil, both are descievers and corruptors, and both were once fair but now are twisted monsters. Only diference is that Sauron is still the "right hand man" and was corrupted by a greater evil. Satan preety much did it alone.

@giygasisgiegue Sorry. Melkor was an Ainor, the first beings created by the LotR god 9whoever they belived in, not including any people who serve Sauron, b/c they belive Morgoth was a god). He also was a Valar, the 14 Ainors who moved to the continent acoss the sea, Aman. No things non-Valar were allowed in Aman except for a few species of elves who "awakened" in Aman. The name of the LotR world was Arda, and the Valar wanted to change it. Melkor had different ideas, and that led him to evil.

I think that is Saruon, not Melkor. Sauron was fair once, but could no longer assume a fair shape after his physical body was repeatedly destroyed and his spirit corrupted. Morgoth originally had no shape, but in the Similarillion he could change into forms that represented nature. iirc, his original performed form was actually a giant mountain.He took the form of a large humanoid but could no longer change after he used up his powers to alter creation (such as creating orcs).

I hate when people try to put a human face to something like Morgoth, it just doesn't fit. The only picture I like here where he isn't wearing his helm is at 2:07 , the rest just are not evil enough. And the pictures like at 1:59 where it just shows a guy wearing a bunch of spikes and a sword made of... spikes gets annoying. It's so " insert generic evil guy here" and Tolkien's Morgoth/Melkor deserves so much better.

Started reading this book. And I must say i've read more of the pre-amble than the actual story. I've only done two chapters but I could safely say that I imagined melkor looking a little like 0:27 but in his later day perhaps more like some of the armoured illustrations.
No mention of sauron yet other than some pre-amble about enemies, when about's does he come into the picture?

...As to all the controversy on here (don't shoot me!) I always pictured Morgoth as being...not precisely ugly, but not precisely beautiful. According to the Silmarillion, most of the Vala are highly capable of scaring the living daylights out of mortals just by looking at them. They take on the shapes of humans, but they're just a little...otherworldly.
So I see Morgoth as scary, yes. Terrifying. But not hideous. Why does he have to be either gorgeous or an Orc?

The mother of Gothmog was Ulbandi also called Fluithuin, a Sarqindi, an ogre.
But Tolkien wasted that story later.

About Melkor being beautiful: At the beginning, when Illuvatar created the Valar and all of Middle Earth he was indeed beautiful, but with a evil touch. Melkor always worked against the Others. You can compare Melkor with the christian view of Satan.
And indeed is Melkor the fallen Valar.

The Summoning is really a great band. I enjoyed the drawings but wonder why in some of them they make Melkor look Elvish with pointy ears. The drawings are all over the place so no one can really establish what Melkor looks like because one is such a stark contrast to another. I guess he thrives in mystery.

See I think we are going about this all wrong. The surest way to knock the enemy off a fell beast is to flash a perfect set of breasts. Something Frodo did not have at the time. (Now they are pretty marvelous!) *It is my firm belief & oh I hope its firm..lol. So if its about bring your enemy down & making him get it up! Tolkien makes it hard not to root for the baddies at least a bit. IMHO he was at his best with the antagonists and antiheroes. Many of the good guys - discounting some - were much less developed and interesting (and awesome) as the darker characters.

As the Arch Gabriel would say. I think given the way she looks at her daughter that daddy has a strong chance in the long run. This a great video. Its just it makes Melokor look a lil faggy at times. I really think he is a straight shooter but you know, what do I know?
