I love those red deckchairs! Chandris kept them (they were masters at recycling fittings from their ships). I wonder how many are floating around in and around Greece.
You got to got kidding! NO WAY! MAN! I will find the book then, I order it from Barnes & Noble. Why those scrap merchants keep get their hands on The Great Ocean Liners. You know, I don't care about money, I just want to see every Liner preserve. I will never forgive the scrap merchants for what the did to The Great Ocean Liners. I not even forgiving them for what they doing to Saga Rose. I can't.
I think I'm starting to get it. I think I need understand her more. By the way, Ile de France was not scrapped. I know,I have the movie call The Last Voyage & I saw her sink right before the camera, I saw her funnel slipped beneath the waves. Do you have proof that she was raise? Because owning that she sank at the end of the film, I think Ile is still at the bottom
@SuperTitanicfreak The Ile de France was definitely scrapped. Producer Andrew Stone rented her from the Japanese scrappers who bought her from the French and filmed his epic aboard her. She was not sunk, but her forward compartments were partially flooded to lower her bow, but the water was then pumped out. Many people claim she was actually sunk during the filming of the movie, but it's not true. Check out Don Stanford's book "Ile de France: The Life Story of a Great Ship."
You know, if united states is such a important liner, why is she been so run down for the past 50 years. My eyes is just not seeing it. I think Queen Mary is more important. By the way, what about my question from yesterday? I hope It wasn't too dark, I was simply asking if we are branded with a unseen mark to all who love Ocean Liner
@SuperTitanicfreak Once again, the SS United States is quite simply, technologically, the GREATEST ocean liner ever built! Safety, SPEED, and style. She's been run down for the past 50 years because she's important enough to save, and the various people who've owned her during that time, all with plans to bring her back to service, and that's a testament to her irreplaceable historic value. Ile de France? Great ship. Scrapped. Mauretania? Great ship. Scrapped.
If you don't see it, you don't see it, and I'm thrilled that the Queen Mary is still with us, as is the Rotterdam V, but of all those, I'd rather see the SSUS saved and restored as a symbol of national pride. As for curses, nah, I don't believe in that stuff. :)
Why's that? I don't know a thing united states, & I didn't want to know her, because I hated her & the fact she stole the Blue Ribband from Queen Mary. Anyway. I love America. By the way, Robert Ballard said Titanic carries a curse to all who fall in love with her like me. If that's true, is it true for all Ocean Liners? If it is, then I have a Curse Mark. Can You get back to me on that? Thank you
uss America so much prettier then united states, even the country itself. It's sad to think that America has been reduce to nothing claim by the sea. But at least it's better then the scrapyard & best of all, like all the other Liners who died, she's with me in spirit.
SSUS is also nice looking. they both shared the same paint scheme and alot of things about the two are similar. SSUS will be stunning again if she is saved not that she looks all that bad right now.
@SuperTitanicfreak Well, the SSUS was built for luxury as well, and she had very loyal passengers and crew who loved her. The America was a lovely vessel, different in style, and was the prototype for the SSUS!
No other line will ever match United States Lines for cleanliness, safety, and impeccable maintenance. These vessels were operated by the most competent officers on the sea. Their conduct was governed in an almost military fashion. One nice thing about the SS America and the SS United States, was that they didn't have the grand interiors of the Cunard Queens, but man could they turn heads with their sleek profiles and good looks. Those immaculate red, white, and blue funnels sure set them off.
Great Video. Its just so sad to see what has become of this ship. Everyone was so happy on this ship. I really liked seeing this ship in her Glory days. Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed it.
Pure joy, for sure! That was the most entertaining I've seen (especially the end) :D
And, oh, what a magnificent ship. The Big U's little sister (though older). That was she next to the AMERICA as she left. And I distinctly saw one of the QE's funnels in the background.
Love the background music, My Fair Lady is my favorite musical!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I made two Atlantic crossings on her in 1964 with my parents when I was a child. I remember them well. She was a great ship indeed!
I can't help but wonder if my grandparents are on the ship when the video was made. They used to take world cruses every 4 years. They sailed on the SS America and the sister ship, SS United States.
Thank you so much for the memories of this grand vessel.
yea? i traveled on her when i was 4 years old from australia to miami florida when she was called the SS Australis. now she's in bits at the bottom of the ocean.
American star was the name the company that bought the ship gave it back in 93-94 the ship had many names is its time but it original name was SS America
A really nice video, it gives a perfect impression of those days. It fascinates me because I've seen the ss america 2 years ago on Fuerteventura myself. She ran ashore only a few steps from the dry ground and seen from the beach it was an impressive sight, even while the stern was gone by then. I've been on Fuerteventura last year again, but didn't take the chance to have a look. People told me that most of the ship is gone anyway. This autumn I will see myself.
Wow great video!! I crossed both the Pacific and Atlantic on her as the SS Australis in 1976 from New Zealand to Southhampton. Such a shame to she the state shes in now
That Ship is a huge shipwreck in the canary islands and is falling apart and rusting away at this very second. It Ran Aground in 1994 on a beach and very little is left of this huge liner.
Thanks, now I know I need glasses! I can remember in the late 60's money being thrown into the water as the cruise ships would leave Bermuda. We would dive in and try to get it before sinking....Dangerous!
It Ran aground in the canary islands and it is one of the most popular shipwrecks in the world. It wont be there much longer. so if you want more information Google SS America Star
