Yea! And that Col. Parker! I thought you astute US might have sussed that Hindsights a wonderful thing. But why did he have to die crappin on a toilet.
I find this an overly sickly version of a beautiful song... please listen to the far better and more original by Matt Munroe. Sorry Elvis fans but this is awfull.
@miloman51 I loved a lot of Elvis, but some songs, not so much. I find this Elvis cut "touching." But I wish he'd have done a quick explanation, then shut-up and let the singer sing! That would have been good enough. We knew, and loved the Matt Munroe version. All the (AM) stations played that when it was released. Still one of my favorite records of all time. I'm glad it's here on YouTube so folks can listen to Matt's version.
I find this an overly sickly version of a beautiful song... please listen to the far better and more origional by Matt Munroe. Sorry Elvis fans but this is awfull.
elvis and the tcb band are absolutely amazing. it's easy to see why his concerts were sold out so often. besides losing sherrill nielsen, we also lost 2 of the the sweet inspirations last year. very sad, but we will always have their music. they will not be forgotten.
Aw Bullshit. It was written as a love song, Beginning in September 1973, Elvis put on a different interpretation at his Vegas show.
Try and play the Bobby Darin version. Of the multitude of versions His is the best. There is a version where Elvis talks the lyrics without "Sherill" Shaun Neilson singing which is Ok. But it's the only one.
I have always thought: There IS much beauty to be found in sadness! This video proves it. What heartfelt lyrics, sung beautifully in the background ( I would like to know who was singing) and spoken in the 'Kings' voice that will live on forever!!! WOW!!!---------Tears!!
Are you serious. This is more Sherill "Shaun" Nielson song. Elvis merely talks.
Unfortunately all of Elvis' versions are performed this way. If you really want to hear the best version, try and find Bobby Darin's. It would have been nice if Elvis adopted Darin's arrangement and recorded this in the studio, sans Shaun "Sherill" Nielson.
Oh my God. I was waiting for him to speak the last words not sing it with his heavenly voice. What a glorious ending. I could die today and be happy having heard Elvis sing.
I sang this song to my son when he was little & I had to return to work. Twenty years later my beautiful boy passed away & I miss him like the daily oxygen I breathe
Without you Dixie Chicks Wonderful tribute song and says what we all seem to feel as also softly as he left us but not before our arms and hearts did beg him to stay. After all the years the tears still fall for billions all over the world. Beautiful songs wonderous pictures of ELVIS and the LOVES of his life. Only one was missing I wonder Why. Great job you do danielle. GOD BLESS YOU there are times we many time I still cry over him. Hugs Bobbie
Lets refrain from any nasty comments on here. WE go on here to hear beautiful music and not to see awful language. Elvis does a good job speaking this song yet he doesnt sing it. Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Michael Buble all sing it just beautifully. Elvis was wonderful as well but we can all be open to other good acts too.
@hollysavannah2000 I apologize I hit the wrong hand I meant to reply to your comment because ELVIS said also theres room for all of us I would not want to say anything bad about any other singer actor or anything like that. he said this in a interview. Hugs Bobbie
Hey everyone, I just want to open your ears to another version of this sung by Michael Buble'. It's probably the most beautiful version of this song, and will def leave you in tears now that you know what the song is about. I hope I dont dissapoint you....
@1wolfiesLady Yes, I have listened to Elvis since I was 12 years old, I'm only 31 yrs old now, and still listen to him every day. If my computer is on, itunes is on shuffle and about 60% of my library is of him lol. His talent is beyond what my mind can fathom. I've even gone as far as saying he should be the 8th wonder of the world because his talent is beyond understanding. I always enjoy meeting TRUE Elvis fans and your comment portrays you as such. thank you for sharing :)
@PhoeticallySpeaking i totally agree! said short, elvis is THE ONE AND ONLY KING! <3 FOREVER! <3 im proud to say i got 356 songs with him on my ipod ! ;D love him, he is the greatest! x
@PhoeticallySpeaking Very True. The words genius is a feeble word for this man. His talent IS beyond understanding. Scholar have called his voice a phenomenon. His vocal artistry and mastery is unmatched as indicated by being the ONLY MAN IN HISTORY inducted into 5 Genre Halls of Fame, titling him a "master artists" in 5 genres. It takes incredible artistry &mastery literally changing the voice to sing different genres masterfully. Scholars say he had many voices. And that's just the start!!!
"It is impossible from this perspective to imagine a world without Elvis, his voice booming out from radios and computers, from spaceships circling the further reaches of the galaxy, his voice echoing back. In fact, it is almost inconceivable that any single individual could have made such a mark."
-Patrick Humphries discussing Elvis' voice in "The Secret History of the Classics"
played this at my beloved dads funeral...he left us softly so as not to see us cry...my heart is broken and will never mend. i will listen to this song from time to time it is so lovely.sleep tight dad you were the best xxxx
I have tears in my eyes and this is what happened to my 29 yr, old son. I sit by his bedside alone for almost 6 hrs, and I watched my beautiful son die.The Drs. called me early in the am and said I must come b/c my son was not going to make it. So I went and talked ,sung to him and told him I would miss him and he died softly almost in my arms. A mom should go 1st,I'll never get over it!
@estelle715 Just want to say something to you, but there's nothing I can say really. I have two sons around the age of your precious child, so although I can't feel your grief, I can understand. I have a huge lump in my throat now.
hollytreeisland..thank you so much for your kind thoughts. It was the hardest thing seeing my precious Ryan pass away, and being alone at the saddest time of my life.! If you want his friends in the navy have him on u-tube,and you cd see him.His name is Ryan Adamski, just type it in. I found it by accident. A good thing in just a few days I will have my 1st grandchild w/my youngest son. A baby girl named Amethyst!{She was due yesterday] Can't wait to see her! God wants us to be happy again! Thanks
It is not John Gary....It's Charlie Hodge, Elvis' cousin who sings background on most of Elvis' recordings throughout the 60s. He also toured with Elvis until Elvis died - singing backup, getting him his scarfs, etc... Read "Careless Love" by Peter Guralnick...he explains. Charlie had a great voice and could immitate Elvis spot on.
You are so wrong. This IS John Gary singing. Elvis was a big fan of John and absolutely loved John's version of this song. Charlie HOdge could not have sung in such a high octave.
of course it was, it was the time when Italian singers were popular, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, the best interpretations of this song are by Matt Monroe and Frank Sinatra
OMG... OMG... OMG! Thank you for this. I've searched everywhere but could never find a recoreded version of this masterpiece which he only performed in my hometown (Vegas).
I've probably sung this song more, both professionally and in private, than any other. It captured my heart from the moment I first heard it, and you've put the perfect video behind the perfect song.

The man singing in the background is Elvis` tenor singer, Sherrill (Shaun)Nielsen. They did this song on numerous occasions in Las Vegas, but never on tour.
According to this article Sherrill WAS the singer in the background even though he sounded exactly like John Gary! Joe
In 1973, According to Felton Jarvis, Elvis producer, Sherrill was Elvis favorite singer. In 1977, Elvis and Sherrills duet, Softly As I Leave You was nominated for a Grammy as duet of the year. Sherrill stayed with Elvis until Elvis death in 1977.
This is a beautiful song. Sherrill is not singing. This is John Gary in a live performance. I have heard him sing this song in person. It is without a doubt John.
