great vid!! one thing i am finding about my practice is that when i begin to get frustrated or tired of my sound i practice something totally different, country ,jazz, shred .......the best tip i have ever gotten is practice what your NOT good at. dont spend too much time on your already developed skills
I just feel like I will never become a good guitar player I play for 4 years now and I don't really feel a big big progress....depressing -.- But thank you for the tips!
I've been told for years to never use distortion. It's a temptation unto itself. I usually just don't plug in. Then I'll give it about 30 mins a day and let it go.
@labtennis0827 i agree too you have to start off without distortion to get it down.. but you also have to practice alot with distortion because as much as distortion covers up mistakes it can exploit more too..because the notes sound alot easier with distorion.. so practice both alot especially if the song demands distortion
So you people with the neg comments, feel better after ya bash this guy? Feel that you've shown your true character, shown some class? I've notice people who are not much good are the quickest to bash someone so that they can try to make themselves look better.
Y do people say to not practice with distortion? If some1 says that you can play sloppy with distortion and it'll sound cool, theyre wrong. I practice with distortion all the time and it forces me to play cleanly because every mistake is ampified. yea sure its easier to do hammerons and pulloffs and such, but otherwise distortion shows mistakes rather than hides them. I'll do an exercise on clean channel then do it with distortion and i have to play a lot more accurately. thats jus my opinion
I agree with chevrolator for the most part. I think practicing both is important. On clean I think missed notes, bad bends, etc. are easier to hear. However playing with distortion makes me work a lot harder on cleaning up my play (string muting, etc.).
i agree. i think it depends on what you are doing tho. practing on distortion will help u play cleaner and also help you learn to mute. but like certain things like u said hammer ons and pull offs are better with out because of the extra work u have to put in with out distortion
Yeah there is an art to playing with distortion. I noticed that when I practice clean too much, then turn on distortion-I will be clean and percise but will have trouble controling unwanted noise. Also, my playing will lack balls con.
You aren't using your right hand correctly, or you aren't muting out unwanted string with your fretting hand.
You could just get a gate or some EMG 81-85s, and cheat your way through not dealing with the discipline. Everyone should learn metal on a strat, with a small tube amp, and fuzz, or Overdrive distortion. And no humbuckers,,get vintage noiseless single coils (no cycle hum, but you have to work for everything. Then switch over to the ESP and the Krank! You'll be unreal.
And an addendum- for beginners, distortion shouldn't be poured on by the bucketload, but when you're starting to get better, turn it on and make it your goal to learn to play cleanly with distortion.
Ha! You said 'eXpecially"... And about distortion- the goal is to make ALL the notes ring out clearly WITH distortion. I'd say that distortion doesn't hide mistakes, it actually makes them stand out more, since a muddled note is a mistake.

I agree with cutting off the distortion. And playing during commercials is an excellent idea.

I agree with the no distortion idea. For one thing distortion adds compression which keeps your volume unnaturally even.

I disagree totally.
Playing with distortion hides mistakes.
If you want to thrash and just make noise, crank the distortion.
If you want to learn how to make great tone and develop the proper touch, turn off the distortion.

again, good tips... watching all the vids man :)
I would like to add (for the fingerstyle oriented people) practicing with visual feedback of the righthand (mirror/reflection in tv:))
Its easy to get stuck in 'wrong' but comfortable 'poses' if you dont watch the hands.
