  • Larry: Thanks so much for posting your videos. I was a 203 and stationed at Shu Lin Kou for the year of 1962, leaving right before Christmas. This really brings back the memories. I really enjoyed my time in Taiwan and traveled all over the island during the months that I was there. I took a lot of pictures, but wasn't fortunate enough to have a video camera. I will be watching for anything else that you might post. Thanks again! Gary

  • i was two years old thank you

  • i was two years yhank you

  • Glad you enjoyed the video of Shu Lin Kou and the surrounding area. There are two more videos taken during the same time. Taiwan Free China 1963 events 2 and Taiwan Free China 1963 events 3. I also have another video that I plan to upload to youtube in the near future. Everytime I watch those videos, I remember as though it was yesterday. It is hard to visualize the changes made since those days of our stay there. Larry Kelley

  • Hello Mr. Kelly,

Wonderful video. Thanks for keeping a record of your stay / tour in Taiwan.

I am currently standing at the site of the Shu Lin Kuo Station!

I'm a video journalist and I will be doing a live Internet web cast about the times the US had bases in Taiwan in a few weeks. Thanks for sharing.

  • Very beautiful images.

  • Dear Mr. Kelley: So surprise for your greatest Film about Linkou. This could be the most precious part of the history which records our memory in the past old days. The Linkou Township would like to adopt this video as the major display media in the exhibition of “The Reviews of Linkou” to the residents , so would like to request for your permission to let this precious film to be present. It will be wonderful if we can have your permission and see your film shows.

I'm Taiwanese, but this is the first time I know what Taiwan looked like in 1963.

    thank you so much!

  • Wow, it's just amazing to see the images from 1963, of the place I live and grow up, thanks for upload these clips :)

  • David, the large city was Taipei and the small village is Linkou Village.

    Larkel

  • 請問這是台灣哪裡的影像?

    which city in TAIWAN?

  • This is a great video. After watching this, I have posted these three 1963 videos together with a series of Japan ruling time videos in "Independent Taiwan Group" to see what KMT had done to Taiwan in 20 years after coming to Taiwan.

  • People are much affluent today than shot.

The place is most likely redone. The country folks many have migrated to other countries.

  • 民國52年時的台灣,珍貴!

  • I was also stationed at Lin Kou during 1963-64, with the Naval Security Group detachment. Thanks for posting the videos.

  • Larry,

I was stationed at Headquarters Support Activity Taipei 1965-67. These scenes are what I remember. Thanks so much for posting all three of you videos.....really great that you were able to store these....really a time capsule. Thanks.

    George

  • Hello John, Glad you enjoyed the videos. I was stationed at Shu Lin Kou Air Station. The videos taken of the village was Linkou Village. The hikes were taken from LinKou to the Taiwan Strait. I am not sure exactly what spot. The downtown shots were in Taipei.

    Larry

  • Larry, thanks for the videos. I was first stationed at US Taiwan Defense Command in Taipei in 1963. Where were you stationed, and what area of Taiwan were the videos taken?

    John

  • Thank you so much for sharing your videos. Taiwan sure has come a long way.

  • I haven't been back to Taiwan since 1963.

I do have friends that served in the military there with me that have been back, some of them, more than once.

    Larry

  • @larkelley: Hope you can visit Taiwan again one day, I believe it's so different for you now.

  • Have you ever got a chance to go back there again?

  • Hi Larry,

Amazing videos!! thanks a lot for sharing.

May I ask which part of Taiwan was shown in the videos?

  • You are probably correct. It was good for the film to stay in storage so many years.

    Larry Kelley

  • Thank god you're American, the KMT government would had you arrested for "suspected espionage" if you were Taiwanese..........

  • I was 19 when the film was made. A fellow airman and I had movie cameras while stationed in Taiwan in 1963. The film was stored away in its metal container until a year or so ago. Recently I had the film upgraded and made the videos for all to enjoy. Larry

  • many many thanks, indeed!

you are so young, and I am wondering how you got these old clips?

  • Thanks Johnnytw. It would be great if you could get your films of Taipei uploaded to youtube also as I know many people will enjoy.

  • Wow! What a film! I was eight then and I remember I had taken the old buses that emitted gases with diesel smell.

I've made some Taipei street videos. Hope that mine will be cherished someday exactly as yours are today.
