  • Great vid!

  • My Aunty Eileen is the lucky chick that gets kissed through the door! WHEEEEEE! :-D

  • DC5= The Beatles + 1 Sax more or less - Great Sound, then and Now as well!

  • I love the old Vox amps.

  • @timparcival Yes, I do too! It's so fascinating, especially for musicians, to see all the "fab gear" that was used during the time period, besides the Super Beatles, AC30s, Vox teardrop, Continental organ, as well as the Rick 6 & 12 strings, Gretsch, Gibson, Fender, Hofner, etc., that are worth big bucks today. No wonder why the groups those days sounded so good: they had the best equipment!

  • Saw them in Columbus Ohio. It was the first concert I had ever seen. The place was packed, and they rocked the house. Dave Clark played drums, of course. The band didn't screw around either....just walked on stage and blew the place down.

  • plz can someone tell me the name of the first song and the name of the album plz plz plz

  • Dave Clark played the drums on the recordings, not someone else. Dave Clark was also the record producer. The Dave Clark Five were very good live. Do not be fooled by any lip syncing. Mike Smith had a fabulous voice and was underrated.

  • @YesterdayProductions I still believe that DC 5 had some of the Greatest song's just wondering why they're is no Live Video's of them ???

  • @Taximan551 There were very few live recordings of any bands during the mid 1960's. Also, Dave Clark would not allow any to be done. Dave Clark was a very shrewd business man. There wasn't broad easy accessable technology to record people quickly and easily over 45 years ago. Some of the television broadcasts of the Dave Clark Five had the vocals live which was done more often. This was quite common.

  • i wonder what is more tiring-playing sax in these songs or pretending to?

  • i wonder what is more tiring-playing sax in this song or pretending to?

  • 1st song (under the announcer) is 'I Know You.' rocks like crazy. The end is even better.

  • naderchaser - that song at the start (under the announcer) is 'I Know You.' rocks like crazy. The end of it is the best.

  • What song is it they're singing at the very start of this vid?

  • The Great 60s' ! wow what a wonderul era !! LOVE IT !!!! many thnx.. for posting .. more PLEASE !!! .. Lyndloo...x

  • I have read where the DC5 was really great in concert live. Saw a Springsteen show on History Channel and the club marquee said Dave Clark Five. This was at Asbury Park where Bruce got his start. I would love to hear or view that concert.

    JJ

  • @JJatHomestead I have read from numerous sources that there are no known recordings of them singing & "playing" live...or possibly one. Rumors persisted that they were not very good live but I find that impossible to believe.....they could not have pulled off a scam like that for such a long peroid

  • lol...Beatle haircuts

  • You are so right richb06092! I grew up in SF and between Winterland, Carousel Ballroom, Cow Palace and Candlestick Park we would go to concerts every Friday & Saturday night and everybody used come through there. Probably easier to name the groups that didn't come through the SF Bay Area in the 60ies!!! Thanks for educating the young pup!!!

  • Jman....you are a fool. I was in grade 7 when the Beattles and DaveClark5 wars were going on....I went with Dave Clark....STFU little boy...you know nothing.

  • Great songs and video! Thumbs up and ********** 's! Thanks for sharing. Cheers ~Monica~

  • a huge influence on the mc5, who i think once opened for them. well-crafted pop. their albums were some of the first i bought

  • I loved them as a KID AND STILL THINK THEY WERE GREAT

  • I thought they were better than the Beatles. They inspired me to play tenor sax(which I still haven't learned).

  • @yektasausage you're the only one who thinks that fool!

  • @julyman08 It's strictly a mater of what one likes.I enjoy many different kinds of music styles, including the Beatles. If you want to see a narrow minded fool with little in the way of musical appreciation, look in any mirror.

  • @yektasausage no... i'd rather come here and read your goofy dumbass comments! dave clark 5 better than the beatles? what breakthroughs in music did they make? whats dave clark doin nowadays? its ok to like somethin but to make a dumb statement like that? come on now! lmao at ya fool!

  • WOW!

  • More like The Mike Smith Five! Still they were a great rock band!

  • @LouisDiFelice Tom Petty has said the very same thing... that the band should have been called The Mike Smith Five.

  • Good point, Sonor - I misremembers a few. They were a pop band, a no-excuses fun group that gave kids what they wanted. They were cute, wore nice costumes, showed up and smiled. They never got arrested for pissing on the Alamo or biting a bat's head off. I loved them. Just wish, as in Elvis' case, they had better direction the second half of their career. I was a professional musician in the 70's/80's in Europe and the U.S. Find Nutbush City Limits - Southern Comfort on You Tube. I played bass.

  • I have yet to ever find a video of the DC5 actually sing a song live...

  • Dave was, in his mind, protecting the band by lip-syncing on TV. They looked good, kids watching didn't mind. If they concentrated on playing live on TV, their wonderful choreography might suffer. Joke. They played live in concert. The Dallas Times Herald critic was upset that Dave mic'ed his drums - any band that had to amplify drums was playing too loud. Back then most of the groups were held captive by the house PA and 7,000 screaming girls - there were no 18-wheelers full of sound gear.

  • Now I know where Donald Trump got his hair style from now!!

  • Has anyone actually seen a true live performance by them?

  • @Palandy33

Yes, I saw them live at Cincinnati Gardens in June of 1964. Ticket prices were $4.95 and $5.95. The show lasted about 30 minutes (which is about the same amount of time the Beatles performed during those years.) I remember one tune they did ... Mike Smith and Dave Clark played separate floor tom-toms with spotlights on them. The tune was an old Gene Krupka drum tune called "Big Noise from Winnetka." Other than that they did tunes from their first two albums.

  • So why hasn't Dave Clark released all 18 appearances on from the Ed Sullivan Show?

    What's his problem?

  • Did they every play live? I see a lot of dubbed "performances." I respect Mike Smith a great deal but too bad they pretended on stage.

  • I'm 61, loved the DCV since I was a boy in Dallas. They burned out too early. Five or six strong, unique rock songs, a couple of movies, but then reduced to releasing very poor material just to get product on the shelves. Mike, one of the great voices of the British Invasion, singing a dreadful Zip A Dee Doo Dah and such, with stagnating production values. With better management they could have adapted and grown with the times. My 21 year old son is named Mike Smith. Not a coincidence.

  • @fr8liner I am a couple of years younger and always thought they miss stepped some where early on.THey were just as good as the Stones/Kinks/Beatles etc.

I witnessed them being chased from the ABC building in NYC by a hundreds girls...

  • @fr8liner 5 0r 6 ? Glad All Over : Bits And Pieces ; Catch Us If You Can ; Because ; Any Way You Want It ; Over and Over ; Can't You See That She's Mine ; Everybody Knows ; Come Home ; I Like It Like That ; Tryin Too Hard ...Let's see ...that's 12 top 20 UK or USA hits ...Compare that to the myriad one of two hit wonders .

  • beautiful

  • Although, for the time this was alright, thankfully The Stones shook up such stale cliché performances..Looks like they're playing in a giant bed bytheway....

Wonder if they actualy lip synched this live performance,or if this was taped over by British Pathe.

  • Thanks so much for posting! In addition to the DC5, I love watching a lot of the old Britsh Pathe features!

  • Thank you for posting this rare footage of the Dave Clark 5. It must have been exciting to be part of the audience watching them play live.

  • A very special rare footage of the DC5, I really enjoyed it. May they forever be in the hearts of their fans worldwide.

  • The singewr does look a bit like Paul McCartney. I never noticed until I saw this video of Bit's and Pieces.

  • awesome!!!!!!

  • HAD A GOOD SOUND HEY, BUT IT ALL SOUNDS LIKE STUDIO STUFF. NOT LIVE

  • I've scoured YouTube for some "Live" footage of DC5 - nothing! Even this is not "Live" - they are miming as they are in all the clips I've seen on this site - did they ever play live? Does anyone know?

  • I sure liked, (and still do), the DC5 back in the sixties, but always thought Dave Clark was the worst drummer I've ever seen/heard.

With The Stones Charlie Watts second worst. Great tunes from a great musical era, that I miss.

  • @dahur

WELL U KNOW NOTHING ABOUT DRUMMING. DO BETTER

  • @50maz

Please send me the links to some Dave Clark, and Charlie Watts drum solos, so I can check out their drumming. Then we'll see.

    What? No links...hmmm. that's what I thought.

  • @dahur: You are so right, in both observations! Dave Clark was to drumming what Dick Cheney was to ballet dancing. But Clark was a truly brilliant businessman. Loved every word of your comment. And the DC5 was one of my favorite groups (with allowance for the drummer, as stated above).

  • I had an odd thought. Pre-'67 pop was innocent, romantic (broadly speaking), fun, tuneful. It gave way to the self-conscious, heavy-laden stuff of latter 60's rock.

That cycle seems like how the 80's music -- tuneful, inventive, romantic, fun -- turned over to "grunge" with its self-conscious posing and "protesting." Same kind of cycle.

Unfortunately, we remain in the cesspool. It's been no fun, only "heavy," for 20 years.

  • Really miss Mike and Denny. They are making beautiful music Sometimes, Because, Everbody Knows their At The Scene

    JJ

  • Their LP catalog has been out of print in the states since '69, Dave is such a fan of his fans. File under Allen Klein or Dick Clark. Graham was their studio drummer. Jim Sullivan played lots of leads.

  • Great video. If you haven't seen it somehow someway get ahold of Tom Hank's speech he gave in behalf of the DC5 when they were inducted into the R&R HOF. Back then music had one basic purpose for teens: JOY. Nuttin' else. Later, a couple of yrs after JFKs death did music lyrics start to mean something. Even John Lennon said that. So today's bitchin' & moaning means nothing. George Harrison said music must always be understood & appreciated in the contex & period it was made.

  • Great footage, thanks for the upload

  • I could only take 2 minutes of this.

  • So much hostility over something that clearly doesn't matter. everyone has the right to express their own opinion and everyone else has the right not to like them. In the end nobody really cares so dont have a coronary over it. What's funny is how big everyone's nads are when they're texting. It's likely that neither of you would say these things if you were face to face . music is meant to bring people together not separate them. live, love and laugh. you'll live a longer, happier life.

  • The Dave Clark five is Awesome! What great footage! But when I looked at the comments below I went hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • a great band and they looked so much better than the beatles.bugger the beatles dave clark rules...!!!!

  • My Brother inlaw was a roadie for Manfred mann,on tour he met these guys, excelent band.

  • I remember this video being made as I am the girl in the dark framed glasses by the door of the Tottenham Royal. We were asked to get there early on the day the video was being made so that we could be in it. What happy memories this brings back. :-)

  • Great, JMN37.........Thanks. A fantastic bit of footage. A fabulous group with a very clever and shrewd leader in Dave Clark.

    Thanks again............Memories, huh ?

  • @bass0111 agree with U about Waldocounty. GET HELP

  • GeneralParadigm: I'll add a follow-up. The DC5 maybe were more talented & versatile than the Beatles. Eric Burdon of the Animals probably had the #3 best voice of the Brit groups. In the end, Beatles ruled.

  • @Waldocounty: My God. Get help.

  • @waldocounty.the animals were a one hit wonder...end of.!!!

  • @MrArnold1972 THE ANIMALS MAY HAVE ONLY ONE NUMBER ONE BUT THEY HAD MORE THAN ONE HIT. im crying got no8 10 weeks, dont let me be misunderstood, no3 9 weeks, weve gotta get outta this place no2 12 weeks, its my life, no7 11 weeks, dont bring me down no6, 8 weeks, inside looking out, no12 8 weeks, For you information the dave clark five can also be called a one hit wonder as the only no1 they had was glad all over. So before you tell people your bigoted opinions, do your fucking homework.

  • @edwina22 i see you are whing again you moaning fucker.the animals were a one hit wonder.the dc5 were better all around.fuck you and fuck your mentally challenged opinions.

  • MrArnold1972 LOL, never mind mr bankrupt, have i pissed on your fireworks again? The dc5 only had one hit, which makes them the same as the animals you cock. Try reading up on things before you shout at people thinking you know it all. SO TELL ME HOW MANY HITS THE DC5 HAVE, BIGMOUTH. Listen people take no notice of mr arnold he dont know wtf he's talking about.

  • @edwina22 again you rush in without thinking.i have never once mentioned how many number ones the dc5 had..!!!again you are brainless and full of contempt and reasoning with people like you is useless.you are totally fucked up morally and mentally and i could only blame it on your upbringing.you are a shining example of the things yet to come in england.if you wear a fucking hood you willl truly look the part.they should send you to afghanistan and really earn your keep.

  • MrArnold1972 So what gave you the right to shoot waldocounty down in flames saying the animals were a one hit wonder when the dc5 are no different? Send me to afghanistan?? no thanks im not into killing women and kids. If you dont like to be put in your place or brought down a peg or two then maybe you should shut your leary fuckin mouth and dont gob off shit to people who are entitled to their opinions.

  • @edwina22 well unfortunately your opinions are bigoted and small-minded.your problem is that you dont like people contesting your views.you walk through life totally blinded by your own bigoted ideas....you should get a life and appreciate just being alive instead of growing old whining and moaning.hope you take this good advice.

  • MrArnold1972 And this is the answer to the question i asked about? Which was why did you shoot waldocounty down in flames just for mentioning the animals. You call me a bigot when its clearly you thats the bigot. You are well and truly sussed MrArnold1972 , the only reason you want labour is because your worried about your giro and handouts. No one in there right mind would vote labour now only the benefit scroungers, and civil servants.

  • @edwina22 what the hell has the labour party got to do with the dave clark five..??i have you sussed mister.you are well and truly fucked up.you are obsessed with benefit claimants.its funny were there nobody on benefits when the tories were in power.ends your argument i think..!!!

  • MrArnold1972 Im not obsessed wit them at all. I will admit it does piss me off the amount of people who have been scrounging for years and never questioned, I dont have anthing against legitimate people claiming if they have lost there job, after all thats why they pay in. But the scroungers are costing this country billions every year, and its time it stopped.

  • @edwina22 i am in full agreement with you when it comes to benefit scroungers.

  • @edwina22 Actually, The Dave Clark Five's only number one here in The States was actually "Over and Over", not "Glad All Over" (But I do personally think that "Glad All Over" was a better song).

  • @edwina22 Actually, The Dave Clark Five's only number one here in The States was actually "Over and Over", not "Glad All Over" (But I do personally think that "Glad All Over" was a better song).

  • @MrArnold1972 And so were the dave clark five.

  • Mike Smith was a better singer than any of the Beatles.

  • GeneralParadigm: I'll challenge that. I think McCartney was the best and most talented lead singer of the era. Smith was a close second, but never got the equivalent exposure.

  • @GeneralParadigm: hahahahahahahaha

  • Beatles For ever . Paul Mccartney is very much singer of the world and all times

  • @rockyrocon63...this video is about the DC5 not the beatles...i get fed up of hearing about the 60s and the beatles.there were other good bands about too...!!

  • yes I understand.Dave is great band

  • Ever hear of a Meter??? He has one of the best.Charlie Watts/Ringo..Simple drummers with PERFECT timing that keep the band from sounding like the record is warped.

  • @koolbossjock: All studio drummers have excellent time, and the ones that played on ***ALL*** the Dave Clark 5 records were no exception.

  • @Borderite76: Dave Clark was not a drummer, period. Ask any professional musician from that era.

  • Bobby Graham drummed on most if not all of their songs.

  • @richb06092: Of course. The Great Unwashed think that the DC5 were a great band = great players, whereas they could barely play a note compared to the session men who did *all* the band tracks for their hits. Any thumbs down clicks fro the same Great Unwashed ignoramuses simply prove my point.

  • @richb06092 Clem Cattini . And that was an urban myth .

  • @richb06092 You must to on drugs as Dave Clark himself played the drums on all their songs, maybe Graham played sometimes in the studio but that was all he ever did,I'm old enough to remember when they and The Beatles Invaded America and the world,I was a teenager.and still remember very clearly about these great groups and their bandmates

  • mike smith looks a bit like hugh grant

  • Rick Huxley (the bass player) now plays with a band called "The Jammy Dodgers" and with a duo called "Razz"

  • they were great

  • They were "so bad" they appeared on Ed Sullivan 18 times....LIVE???

  • I have 3 to 4 hours of DC5 TV footage to trade on DVD if anyone's interested.

  • Boy , that audience is rocking, feel like I am watching "Shawn of the Dead"...uh zombies

Easy to see why the Beatles ruled over the DC5

  • The film was part of a TV program, not a regular concert. Their concerts normally were riots. You can hear the music over the sounds of a live audience in the background, which is usually not possible. There is a great documentary of the "British Invasion" on YouTube and it uses parts from this program.

  • This is rare! Loved DC5. For awhile, they ran neck & neck with the Beatles during battles of the bands

  • you've got an opinion-a stupid one, but an opinion.

  • You may consider my opinion "stupid" but its a fact that these guys were so bad they avoided as much as they could live performances. Incidentally the studio version of "Glad All Over" has been overdubbed onto this so called live performance.

  • Comment removed

  • The DC5 changed, first their music changed from gentle rock to "hard rock with songs like "Bits and Pieces". Then they quit wearing suits and wore more casual clothes. They were a great success and paved the way for bands like the Stones and Led Zepplin.

  • Thought the Kinks did that?

  • @Bullettube: Hahahahahaha Hohohohohoh LOL LOL LOL 8-D

  • fuck off u black

  • GREAT VIDEO! Mike Smith FOREVER!

  • The track you're asking about is indeed the b-side to Glad All Over. Great track.

  • Found it! "I know You". Apparently a B-side fr their first album.

  • what's the name of the song playing at the beginning of this clip?

  • Boy, did that bring back memories of going to see their concerts. They might not have been as musically sophisticated as the Beatles, but boy, were they fun to see.

  • This music was a much more positive message than we hear from today's music. So much is lost, but it's good to look back.

  • ok i got it, they loved that song for the reason ppl used to work alot more then now so this music would be apreciated more then it would now. otherwise idk how they liked it

  • One of my fave British 60s groups.

I wonder why they didn't call themselves The Mike Smith Five.

  • because singers aren't KINGS! Dave was the brains.

  • The audience is sure rocking out...lol

  • Super cool British Pathe News production! Boss backstage getting ready footage... Dave Clark Five are romping stomping good fun! Love 'em!

  • Long Live The British Invasion ! ! !

  • omg its aaaaaaasome i can dig it.

  • This is brilliant - thanks for sharing it, what a glorious wallow in nostalgia.

  • wats the name of the song at the beginning?

  • Comment removed

  • the name of the song is I KNOW YOU

  • Comment removed

  • I pretty much thought I had heard just about every record The DC5 put out. But, I've NEVER heard the very first song in this documentary. I wish I heard of it sooner - like 45 years ago!

  • I agree with you. I love the DC5, and I am not judging people. I simply posted this, because I thought it was cool and that it should make us think. There is nothing wrong with posting something to remind us of things that are good and should be important rather than tearing people down, which is what happens too often on here. I like the DC5 because they are fun. We need more of this in music. Thank you for your comment.

  • You forgot big tits and tight asses.

  • Happy birthday Lenny Davidson the famous guitarist of DC5 !!!!!!

    67 today, 30 May 2009 !!!!

  • This makes me feel glad all over!!!

this is sowaycool, Thierry, thanks, meow

...and Happy b~day to Lenny Davidson

  • this has me laughing happy glad all over birthdays to Lenny Davidson... ~Smiles~

  • my fave part is the bits and pieces stomp @ 4:36!! Happy birthday Lenny Davidson, & thank you, Thierry ~xoxo~

  • Hey it's good to see yous all again so we can all scream our brains out together. i've been busy working too much overtime like an adult

  • This is great footage. Glad All Over is one of my favorite songs. Thank you for posting.

  • what is that first song called at the beginning of this video. i love it!! is it available on a compilation?

  • Comment removed

  • called I know you and is on cd the history of the dave clark 5

  • Has anyone noticed that the keyboard player looks like a very young Hugh Grant??

  • Well, certainly but I also think he looks like Paul McCartney, I had the chance to send Mike a get well e mail and he answered back, long live Mike

  • this is the Dave Clark Five ya dumbass

  • Beatles Forever!

  • Like most promotional films at the time and now-(think MTV/CMT/VH-1 etc) it is not live. Been in the music/entertainment business for several decades now and have worked on similar band promos . Usually there are one or 2 cameras and multiple takes "mimed" along with the record. The camera(s) are relocated to different locations for closeups/crowd shots etc. Major news was often filmed this way. MacArthurs' "return to the Philippines" was shot many times for the best "promo" for example.

  • That's really interesting. I've read that TV studios wanted acts to lip sych - understandable. Would you mind messaging me and telling me more about this? Thanks.

  • I absolutely loved this band, shame they were miming though. You can clearly hear a tambourine on 'Bits and Pieces' yet nobody is playing one. That doesn't detract from the music itself though, which is just FAB!

  • Hmmmm. Good point. Could it be part of Dave Clark's drum kit, or an overdub by British Pathe before it released this?

  • 1964 65 I remember, another wanna be the Beatles group.

  • Terrific video. I always liked this band and especially Mike Smith who was a great performer.

  • Excellent, superb documentary capture, an extract straight out of the times. Other clueless posters, groping and criticizing, have no concept of the era, but the era gave them their pop-music roots. So sad they've been such poor custodians: rap, hip-hop, Spears, all the rest of the no-talent losers. Such a travesty.

RIP Mike Smith, DC5 lead singer.

  • 88cutty: The Monkees were a joke, but the DC5 were the real deal, I saw them play here in the states on their first tour and they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show more than any other band. They were also the first band to knock the Beatles off the charts and were also the first Power Band (loudest) to come out of England.

  • geez were they Milli Vanilli before their time miming to their records?

  • Worse yet, they were the British Monkees !

  • Actually The Monkees were the US Beatles...

  • Waynescott1, The Beatles could really play what they were holding. The DC5 and The Monkees used the instruments for props !

  • Strictly youropinion..The Monkees were basically a studio group offstage as were Paul Revere & The Raiders. The DC5 inspired Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt , Paul Shaffer and Max Weinberg..the Monkees inspired no one.

  • Waynescott1, just to add, also others have indicated being inspired or influenced by the DC5, including Tom Petty(who has said the group shoul have been called The Mike Smith 5), Billy Joel( Mike Smith influenced him), KISS, Bay City Rollers, Joan Jett, & others. Even Elvis liked the DC5. Long Live The Dave Clark Five!!!

  • The DC5 used there instruments as props??? What the fuck would you know? you were there i suppose.

  • tyhplas, The records the DC5 made WERE great, that's not the point. You're right ,they were on Sullivan more than anyone and on several other US TV programs as were the Beatles ,Animals, Stones,Hermits etc. There is live video of those bands and many more on US TV programs. Of the 13 times on sullivan they tried to play live twice. 3/8/64 GAO & 11/20/66 Sittin Here Baby, both awful !There is video of the Beatles live around the world ! Where is the live video of the DC5 ? Not even news footage

  • 88Cutty. No I can't remember seeing any live recordings of DC5 either - but I DID see them play live regularly both in Tottenham and Basildon during the early sixties as the resident dance band. If you saw them too perhaps we can have a meaningful discussion on their merits?

  • Brilliant Clip

    GR8 Band + Post

  • great song

  • Note how not only the band, but the fans dressed well to appear in public, showing mutual respect? When did the rule of the slobocracy take over?

  • once the Beatles stopped doing it.

  • I haven't been able to find any actual live performances on here from these guys. Hmmmm.

  • Sounds like the record . . . not a live performance.

  • Definitely the record dubbed in .

  • Too bad Dave Clark's such a control freak. And don't say it's a good business move on his part He could share the music and videos with the people who made them.
