  • shoot my handgun I shot today was 4#

  • Thanks for the advise, I just bought one for my 3 year old. Got him a box of pointed core locks too. Hope it's ok to put point to primer, oh well he will see.

  • @ihop54 Awesome that gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside, not familiar with core lock I assume it either has a plastic tip or a silicon tip. Either one is soft anuff not to cause any problems. Wait did you say 3 years old, I think the gun is taller then him or was that a tipo?

  • One thing I like that you brought out was that it is a brush gun. I own the same gun and live in eastern Oklahoma where the buck brush is thick and the trees are plentiful in places lots of hills and ridges on the land I hunt so I don't get to shoot at deer 300 yards away very much but more like 40 to 150 yards and it does the job very well.

  • @412booker Most people seem to concern themselfs only with yards. How far out can I shoot. I'm not shooting across fields so I'm not worried about the long shots. A friend of mine told me a story about his grandparents, Grandma hunted with a double barreled 410 shotgun. Got her deer every year. Grandpa thought he'd be smart and gave her his 30-30. Well she got her deer...and his too! He took that 30-30 away from her and gave her back that 410. I laughed at the story, he told it well!

  • Looking at the actual ballistics of the Hornady 160gr FTX 30-30, the Marlin easily has the power, and accuracy, to harvest medium game at 300 yds. The 30-30 FTX doesn't drop into transonic velocity range (<1300fps) until 500 yds, about 100yds farther than the AK47's 7.62X39 round!

  • Actually, using the HITS calculator on Hornady's website, shows the 30-30 FTX to have the power to take medium game at 500 yds, as the 160gr bullet velocity is still 1301fps @ 500yds, giving a HITS score of 502 just at the bottom threshold for medium game.

Now, that is too marginal for a quick, humane kill in my book. BUT it does show just how capable the 30-30 actually is with modern ammo having a high ballistic coefficient, yet safe to load in tubular magazines!

  • Part 2

Actually 7mm and 8mm mausers, but 30-30's still kicked their butts.

  • @DanteRizo Cool I've got to rememeber this story the next time someone rags on my 30-30. I read sometime ago from a anti gun guy. That 30-30's could penetrate lightly armored vehicles. This qualified them as assault weapons and they should be banned. My only thought was REALLY...COOL I'll have to remember that. But the 30-30 seems to be treated as only a youth rifle, as far as range goes I thought from aritcles I've read that if I said it could do 300+ yards. that people would jump all over me.

  • @zeltarstormrun My first rifle too - It will reach to but effective KILL zone 100-200 yards closer to the 100 - but you can support cover over to 300 --- this rife is a well rounded all general purpose rifle

  • During the Mexican revolution the rebels used mostly 30-30 rifles against the Federal army's 8MM long range mausers. The federals claimed that those 30-30's were so short range that they were useless against them, until they lost the war to the 30-30 rebels. 30-30's do the job. For deer hunting you only need to carry a few rounds anyway, hell your full canteen weights more than a 30-30. Travel light, shoot at 300 yds max. It does not have to be your first gun, it could be your only gun.

  • You talk to much. Plus i have shot a deer with the same rifle from 350 yards. :(

  • You made a very wise choice and in my opinion , unless you plan to hunt out west where longer range shots are common other calibers are more than likely necessary. A Marlin 336 in 30-30 is probably all the rifle you will ever need. I have harvested over 50 whitetails with a 336 - 30-30 and every one was a one shot, quick, clean kill. Well done video.

  • @magicdaveable Thanks! I'm really surprised by how many views this video has gotten. Especially with all the Marlin 30-30 vids their are on Youtube. I guess it testifies to the popularity of the gun and the round. I hadn't really seen anyone talk about the practical use of the 30-30 round. The 30-30 seems to get talked down alot and it's a real shame.

  • @zeltarstormrun I have 2 Marlin lever action rifles. One is a 336 which I have had since 1962. I got it for my 13th birthday. My Dad was tired of me taking his 3006 Remington deer hunting :-) I didn't like using such a powerful caliber in the tick woods in upstate NY where I grew up. It was one of the best birthday presents I ever got. I also have an 1894C 357 Mag. I use it for deer these days. I used it this year. I shot my deer at about 75 yards and it works well too.

  • 30-30 will go to 300 yrds.

  • @zac030101 Really? is that with LeverRevolution ammo or standard ammo in the hands of a really good shooter.

  • @zeltarstormrun really really.

  • Nice gun. I love mine. Long live Chuck Connors!!!

  • Yep got mine at Wal Mart good prices their at China Mart. Though cashers seem a little jumpy, wonder what kind of horror story they've been told. I think the W stands for Winchester, I think they were the first to come out with the 30 30 round. I don't think the wood is real walnut just a walnut stain. Marlin came out with a Deluxe 336 with real walnut and they pointing that out on their adds. So it makes me wonder what kind of wood they normaly use.

  • @zeltarstormrun

Dude, you got a nice stock on yours. I got mine (same model) from dick's and the checkering was horrible. I had to send it back because the butt stock had a hairline crack down the neck. Marlin makes solid guns but it seems that the newer ones have significantly declined in quality. I have an older model marlin 17hmr that is a nail driver and has one of the best factory stocks I have seen on a gun. Great video btw.

  • @usmguy1234 Bad checkering and a cracked stock that sucks. Never head anyone say that about a Marlin. I know that the Marlin plant in North Haven Conn was shut down in 2011 or so I read and it's supposed to be moving to North Carolina. Where Remington is centered, they bought Marlin in 2007.

  • Many thanks, great review, nearly the best on YouTube

  • @sithialacht Thank your very much!
