  • To be honest, I don't like Fantasy movies (I prefer Sci-Fi) but this movie blew me away - very interesting storyline, nice visual effects, great acting. James Purefoy was brilliant as Solomon. I like the idea that the main warrior/killer/hero was religious. Rachel Hurd-Wood was stunning as well. "Solomon Kane" is interesting, sometime even shocking and criminally underrated movie. I hope they will make a sequel

  • Yeah watching your review up until you said AVP2 was a good movie, you suck and should not review any movie!

  • @XaeeD Just for the sake of interest, what specifically was wrong with AvP 2?

  • @GrannyGoddy Come on dude we're the same age so I assume you must have seen Predator as a kid. I know the Predator in AVP2 was cool, but I really don't understand how you could say it was a good movie. It sucked balls, with all the obnoxious teenagers running around. Didn't even feel like a Pred-movie. It was horrible. The only good thing was the Predator, everything else sucked. Sorry cant tell you what specifivally was wrong with it. Its just, thats now what I think a Pred-movie should be like

  • @XaeeD Of course I've seen Predator. It's one of the greatest movies ever made.

And do you know what was good about all those obnoxious teens running around? Most of them got horribly killed :-)

I grant you AvP 2 is not what a Pred film should be. Because it's also an Alien film. The problem with AvP is that the two franchises generally have different m/o's. One is about claustrophobic terror, the other is escape and evade with an alien.

What I liked about AvP 2 is that it was a dark, violent film that didn't skimp on the graphic spectacle. It genuinely surprises me that it didn't get an '18' certificate.

On a happier note, 'Predators' was an absolutely awesome film, so I guess it's balanced out somewhat :-)

  • @XaeeD Honestly, I didn't like AVP 2 that much but the first AVP was bad too and your worshiping of Predators is funny cause Aliens are much faster and more unique creatures

  • @Magnolia296 'worshiping'?? Seriously, it's just a fictional character, just a game..

  • @XaeeD OK, I agree with you here. I said that cause read many horrible, insulting and just rude things about aliens from predator fans. I thought u r one of them. Sorry about that

  • @Magnolia296 O no, I like the Alien movies, I think they're awesome. Even though I like the Predator-movies better, I don't hate the aliens :)

  • @AFuck1ngNinja Thanks :-)

The song at the start is "Devil is a Loser" by Lordi. The full music video is here:

It does make me laugh, that song :-)

  • This movie was terrible , and bastardized Howard's character. This is another example of a great story and character being over done and twisted into an unrecognizable pile of typical Hollywood drivel. This "film" is another director's self indulgent stupidity , where they believe they know more about a character then the person who created it. scrw this movie and all who labored to make it.

  • @googoobh Hmm... interesting.

Perhaps it's my complete lack of knowledge about the character of Solomon Kane that let me enjoy the movie.

I wonder, is it simply the maker's bastardisation of the character that ruined it for you, or do you think that, taken on its own merits, it truly is a terrible movie? (genuine curiosity)

  • @GrannyGoddy You are probably that the total lack of faith to the character ruined this movie for me , but I do think this movie really has been made dozens of time already and gives almost nothing new to this sort of genre. I have seen it all before. Honestly I am sick of film makers whose egos tell them they can do the story so much better. Kane is a very complex character of deep religous faith , even if it is his own twistwed version of faith. :continued ........

  • @googoobh I think YouTube smegged up, as there isn't a second comment (assumed due to the 'continue' )

    However...

I do take all of your points, and I tend to agree. And in all fairness, if I had any previous knowledge about Kane, I dare say I'd think the same as you :-)

I think from my point of view, although I agree it brings very little that's new to the whole swords and sorcery genre, I enjoyed it because it wasn't some lighthearted fantasy romp aimed squarely at kids.

I think the problem likely lies in the process of adapting books for the screen, big or otherwise. For example, with the Discworld adaptations there have been a lot of what made the books both brilliant and hilarious got lost in the translation, because a lot of the best bits were in the main body of the prose. Which, by their nature, couldn't be easily translated to the screen.

Still, if nothing else I'm resolved to track down some Kane stories, once I've read my current book pile :-)

  • @GrannyGoddy True , Your right , I too am sick of every movie being written to generate as much money as possible to the point of taking away the whole point , But this movie only has moderately done better. I could write this movie and many have over and over. This was a real opertunity to make a movie with a true anti-hero and deep and strange motivations. I both love and almost hate Kane. He is single minded , Yet complex and rich in character as written by Howard. I can't ignore this ...

  • @googoobh I can't ignore this watering down of an original character. It might as well be a cartoon on Cartoon Network for all the thought and realization put into this crap film. I can see why many can enjoy this movie ... after all it has been done before. But I just can't agree with the assassination of this character.

  • @googoobh And that is both fair enough, and something I can certainly relate to.

  • How do you make all those effects and the model that is supposed to represent you?

Will you show us how you do it?

  • Well, I use Adobe Premiere mostly, which helps with the effects, such as they are.

As for the little model of (sort of) me, that's... a little more involved, making extensive use of different images for different movements.

As for showing people... well, it's gonna take me a little while to finish off the Wax tutorial... soooo... tell you what, give me a few weeks, and I'll see what I can cobble together.

Can't guarantee it'll blow you away, but it could be fun :-)

  • Hey there GrannyGoddy,

You've pretty much confirmed what I'd hoped about this film from watching the trailer: I was afraid it'd go down the "Van Helsing" or "eague of Extraordinary Gentleman" route, but luckily it seems to have sidestepped that pit fall. A good, bleak comic book romp, then? 5*

    George

  • Hi George,

One thing I can say with 100% certainty, having seen both "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and "Van Helsing", is that "Solomon Kane" kicks the ever loving piss out of both of them. Then stabs them repeatedly with a sharp stick, before throwing their broken, barely breathing corpses into the Banwell.

It's just a nice slice of dark, brutal fun, and I honestly spent a good deal of the film with a smile on my face.

Hope that adds more confirmation :-)

    Dave
