  • This is a beautiful tribute. It doesn't include one of my favorite Newman movie themes but I am not sure that it belongs in this collection. He did the theme music for a western called "Yellow Sky" that included Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter, Richard Widmark, and John Russell in the cast. The theme music for "How the West was Won" is the only thing in this tribute similar. It sounds like the music they played on the merry-go-round when I was young. It's apparently not on youtube.

  • Just wondering if you might possibly know who sang Alfred's and Charles Henderson's, "Creole Lullaby." And thanks for uploading this tribute. He's such a genius.

  • @funwithFred Such a pity Creole Lullaby - that beautiful, haunting melody with harpsichord from Dragonwyck - is no-where to be found.

  • all the newman dinasty had done an amazing work....

without their music the most important film on western culture would be nothing...

  • 1:20-2:00 reminds me of Rhapsody in Blue :)

  • WAIT! So, HE did the 20h Century Fox music TOO?

  • @cesarjimenezanimator Yes, he did :)

  • @missalice0306 wOw!

  • Anne Frank :D!!

  • I don`t know what is better, to listen this great music or to watch these beautiful oldie movie covers.

  • i can clearly hear that Mr. Williams the legend was inspired by this legend.

  • nice work! missing how green was my valley though.

  • Bravo!

  • thumbs up if you think the 20th century fox fanfare at the beginning should be the new fanfare for the logo!

  • Great composer.

  • Top 10 Film Composers of All time (in no particular order) John Williams Alfred Newman Ennio Morricone Elmer Bernstein Hans Zimmer Maurice Jarre Jerry Goldsmith Danny Elfman John Barry Franz Waxman
  • @albusdumbledoreRIP Where's Max Steiner? If there was a juggernaut in the music industry it's the man that wrote the themes for Casablanca, Gone with the wind, A Summer Place, Anne of Green Gables, King Kong, Rhapsody in Blue, and The Fountainhead.

You missed one of the biggest of all (3rd overall in most Oscar nominations - Behind Alfred Newman and John Williams) His music is a part of American culture more than any other movie composer save for John Williams with whom he is on par.

  • 1st song is the twentieth century fox film corporation fanfare

  • I'm impressed!

  • Wonderful compilation. The only thing missing was any selection from "Captain from Castille." "Conquest," the stirring march from that swashbuckling movie was gifted in perpetutity to USC by Newman in the 1950s, but I am sure the Trojans would not have minded if you had included it. It is widely considered his among best work. Still and all, a great and well deserved tribute!

  • One of my favorites...and the orchestrations are grand!

  • nobody could score music for strings and tug at the heart like newman could. THE EGYPTIAN AND HOW THE WEST WAS WON are my favorites

  • This is epic composing. I have to say though that his son Thomas is my favourite film composer. The Shawshank Redemption soundtrack is unbelievable.

  • This man is one of the greatest filmcomposers that ever lived. Up therw with williams-goldsmith0steiner-korngold.

  • GREAT!

  • I'm related to A. Newman :D

  • How?

  • where's Conquest from Captain from Castile..Jeez!!

  • That is USC's football fight song. The school may own the copy write and therefore won't allow it played in any venue except the Coliseum or on campus.

  • amazing thanks for upload this help me to know more about composers on this period of time

  • Thanks, for these quick 'references' to some great movie scores!

  • My elementary school took a field trip to the Cinerama theater in Manhattan to see "How the West Was Won;" it was 1962. Nearly a half-century later, that experience is recalled as if it had been this morning. Though a visually stunning film (in Cinerama and Technicolor),

  • it is the extraordinary music of Alfred Newman (and his associate Ken Darby) that remains most vivid in my memory. Before the curtains even opened (how many can recall a theater with curtains covering the screen?), the heroic full-bore Overture played through the twelve-channel stereophonic system, followed by the Main Title as the curtains parted, Leo the Lion roared and the opening credits rolled. It was a literal cinematic extravaganza, the likes of which will not be experienced again.

  • The John Ford directed part of How The West Was Won was the least convincing. He did not even make sure the cannons recoiled in the night battle scene. That was done on the cheap.

  • Fantástico!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Among my favourites are 'The Greatest Story Ever Told', 'The Mark of Zoro', 'Captain from Castille' and too many others for the space here. Brilliant composer.

  • Wayne is playing great instrumentals this weekend on national radio including, of course, those of Alfred Newman. [how could you not].

his zany cousin E was entertaining also.

Thanks for the great music. allan vincent

  • I just bought a record of Alfred Newman themes! What a find! Thank go I've just gotten my record player up and going, because when I saw the LP at my local record store I almost exploded witht the excitement!

  • Thanks for posting this i love it.His music will live forever...

  • STREET SCENE A CLASSIC !

  • My very favorite film composer.

My favorite Alfred Newman scores: How the West Was Won, The Diary of Anne Frank, Anastasia, Wuthering Heights.

Alfred Newman has done so many brilliant scores to so many movies that I love, but I have to say that I love The Diary of Anne Frank best film wise, but How the West Was Won score wise.

  • great music

  • OH MY GOD! I cried as I always do when the Anne Frank-music came up... It's the best film ever made, with the best score ever written! :´D

  • @Stravinsky91 Same here lol

  • I will never forget the moment I first heard the soundtrack for How the West Was Won; it breaks and mends your heart immediately; this music tells the story of the West. It is the most glorious and heroic melody I have ever heard, bar none.

    Bless you Maestro.

Thanks for this tribute to the master.

  • From one who loves great film composers and admires the best, this tribute to Alfred Newman is appreciated and long over due. You did a fine job putting together the right audio mix with matching visuals. My hearty congratulations. As with any compilation, we always wish for our favorite moment. However, considering the daunting task of choosing from over 200 film scores, and dozens of AA nominated ones, you chose wisely. From cinemaphiles everywhere, we thank you.

  • @cinemabon very distinguished job, thanks.

  • and nice to see this artwork of gone decades on top :)@cinemabon

  • Thanks. Wonderful tribute to a genuinely great composer.

  • This tribute is beautifully done by Bernardo in Lisboa. Thank you so much for posting the wonderful themes of Alfred Newman. Anastasia is my all time favorite!!

  • I would also like to hear Gunga Din, Wilson

and How to Marry a Millionaire

along with the Egyptian and the Razor's Edge.

How did he write so much music?

  • Great tribute. I wish you could do another one including "Razor´s Edge" and "Captain From Castille", those scores were great as well.

  • Anastasia is my personal favorite!!!!

  • Well done, but it's missing "The Egyptian" film score, in which Newman worked together with Bernard Herrmann. I think this is one of the most important Newman's film score ever. Thank you.
