@PaterTuus They fill different roles, the emperor class is the battleship as we know it huge guns and loads of firepower, the retribution still has enough power to blow most ships up but it has less gun fire power and has boarding pods and launch bays.

The Emperor has high load capacity for ordance (fighters, bombers, boarding transports) but lacks lances

i just started battlefleet gothic, managed to play a lot of games with some friends. I had imperial and they ahd eldar and chaos. I noticed that it wasn't the biggets ships that won the match, but the skill and tactics of the ship. I took a two cruisers and destroyed the planet killer in two turns of shooting.

I know, but I read in the Codex Astartes that the litany of fury was an Retribution class right? (if not I must be making a mistake if so please correct and excuse my error) and retributions are like the strongest ships in the imperial fleet.

Retribution is an Imperial Navy Battleship. The litany of fury is a Space marine Battlebarge. Reribution isnt the most powerful war ship in the imperium... most powerful would be the space marine fortress monistaries or some unknown imperial navy warship

Steampunk? No, Warhammer 40.000 is cyber-gothic or (as the fans know it) grimdark.

I saw some Star Wars steampunk conversions, and those look like 18-19th century Western tech, steam driven.

Warhammer 40k is more like a dark and gothic medeival style with advanced tech (Adeptus Mechanicus even have nano-robots used for repair).

Only Necromunda can be called steampunk.
