Does anyone know the premise of No Soap, Radio? I never heard of that show (I was 11 in 1982). What a great cast, Bill Dana, Fran Ryan, Eddie McClurg, Stuart Pankin and of course Steve Guttenberg
@MikeStivic I couldn't remember "No Soap, Radio" until I read the following description, then it seemed vaguely familiar. It was a sketch show about a motel in Atlantic City run by Steve Guttenberg: "This show would go into movie parodies or other skits completely unrelated to the main story...a reoccurring sight gag involved a "Break in Case of Fire" box...Each week one would see everything from a live fireman to a boy scout (rubbing two sticks together) encased in the glass booth..."
@MikeStivic Search ...watch?v=oJ9YaDgSGmA - "No Soap, Radio" - Yukon Dan. Weird as s**t!
The show's title refers to an old Vaudeville-era gag. You tell a nonsensical joke, where the punchline is "No soap, radio." Everyone except one person in the group listening to the joke knows it's a gag and starts laughing hysterically. The victim will start laughing too because they feel stupid not knowing what the punchline means.
What I find interesting about watching this footage is that, I imagine, many of the places and people shown no longer exist. Many of the actors are no longer or are dead. Buildings and places are gone.
@bjoh249 Making the Grade premiered from April 5, 1982 and ended on May 10, 1982 during the 1981-82 television season. Cheers premiered September 30, 1982.
Chicago Story featured Dennis Franz, who is really from Chicago; he later would appear on the short-lived series Bay City Blues before he made it big again on NYPD Blue. Also, Daniel Hugh-Kelly was on Chicago Story; about a year later he was on Hardcastle and McCormick, which lasted for three seasons. Silver Spoons featued Erin Gray, just coming off from her run on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
No Soap, Radio starred Steve Guttenberg, who a few years later, went to do famous movies such as Police Academy and Three Men and A Baby. The Powers of Matthew Star featured Louis Gossett Jr., who also did very well in many movies, and became the first African-American to win an Emmy.
Making The Grade featured an unkown George Wendt, who became known to millions as Norm on Cheers. Also, Alley Mills appeared on Making the Grade; she later starred on The Wonder Years as Norma Arnold.
Making the Grade was a TV Show that launched the career of Creator Gary David Goldberg who went on to create Family Ties, Day by Day, Brooklyn Bridge, Spin City as well as Short-Lived Sitcoms such as Sara Starring Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Bronson Pinchot, Bill Maher, Ronnie Clare Edwards and a very young Matthew Lawrence and he also created Champs Starring Timothy Busfield of Trapper John, M.D. and thirtysomething co-starring Mel Harris.
Ripley's seems cool (sounds cooler!), but everything else looks terrible. Silver Spoons especially!

I bet the producers of "The Powers of Matthew Star" figured they had the next Star Wars and Superman hit on their hands when this came out.

"Chicago Story"'s Maud Adams later on went to play Octopussy in the James Bond film of the same name in 1983.
Dennis Franz later on appeared as Mooney in "Psycho 2" in 1983.
Craig T. Nelson also appeared in the first "Poltergeist" in 1982.
"Bring 'em Back Alive"'s Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan starred alongside Jeff Bridges in the sci-fi hit "Tron".
Adrian Zmed played Johnny in "Grease 2" the same time he played Romano in "T.J. Hooker".

Silver Spoons. YUCK! I can't believe I actually used to watch that. Then again, it's an improvement over the stuff on today.

No Soap, Radio was a CRAZY SHOW! I remember a scene where some Japanese submarine folks were trying to bomb a little old lady.
Richard Herd from TJ Hooker was "John" in the first V miniseries.
