I believe that is Raymond Leppard conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra. FYI, the two best recordings happen to be recent ones and are available to see here on YouTube, one by Norwegian trumpet phenomenon, Tine Thing Hespeth, and the other recording by Alison Balsom, the young winner of the British Classical Music Awards' Musician of the Year for 2009 and 2010. Hespeth has the circular breathing nailed and her technique is flawless, but Balsom is a close second. Marsalis is up there.
@slofox13 Tine & Alison are excellent, but Hakan Hardenberger has clearly been w/out peer for over 20 years, and most will conclude that he is our greatest exponent of the trumpet. As a New Orleanian, I was inspired by the Marsalis family and Wynton was certainly my greatest influence before Hardenberger. Though focused on jazz the last 15-20 years (where his legacy is nearly inestimable), Wynton's contributions to the classical idiom can never be diminished are discounted.
A God among men.

This shit is gay and uninteresting. Rather listen to Maurice Andrea, who has more soul in one note.

@pwnmonkeyisreal It's an Eb trumpet, the leadpipe stops short, and connects straight down to the third valve

@RoboSlater Those two - Tine and Alison - are the best I have seen in ages. Just love their work. Great players both.

@Mariobilic1 Sound quality is terrible. The fact that he sounds that good with such poor sound quality is unbelievable.

after he plays the cadenza like that, its not fair that the audience has to hold their applause til the end of the piece

Marvelous! Who are the orchestra and conductor?
Garpinator 1 year ago
I think the cadenza was a variation on one which I've heard recorded by the great Maurice Andre. But, oh man, WHAT A VARIATION!!!
