I know i'll be court-martialled for saying this, but this miniseries is better than the David Lean version, in that it's closer to to book AND this beautiful theme is better than the sweeping "Lara's Theme" from the original movie. You FEEL the passion in this film version. I LOVE the 1965 movie, but this one is much better.
I agree with you! I do have very fond memories of the time when I was young and impressionable, in LOVE with all things Russian or about Russia, and thought the David Lean film and its soundtrack were the last word in the beautiful and the tragic--but the miniseries has offered a whole new perspective. And neither one strictly follows the novel, but I think the 2002 screenplay is more articulate and has the better-developed characters, and illuminates motives better.
