Hi! I'm making high degree musical studies at ESMUC, Barcelona, Spain. I'm doing a work about the authory of Aura Lee, not necessary against Elvis, but trying to refresh to the audience that this tune has another origin different from the movie Love me Tender (ugh!) and trying to break the effect of the marketing and "unsportive" attitude of the director and Elvis, whom get the rights like if they were the authors. I don't like brain washing...If someone can help me anyway i'll thank u a lot!

It's a shame that when the lyrics were changed and the song was renamed Love Me Tender, that credit wasn't given to George R Poulton the original melody maker. Curiously, the songwritng credits were given to Elvis Presley and Vera Matson. It was Vera's husband Ken Darby who changed the lyrics and when asked why he had put his wife down as co-songwriter with Elvis, he replied: 'Because she didn't write it either.'

SnowBunnieSqueakyToy , I hope from now on you will do some research before making a comment that you clearly know nothing about. "Aura Lee" was written by W. W. Fosdick (words) and George R. Poulton (music) during the Civil War, and was one of the most popular songs among soilders on both sides. In the 1950s Ken Darby then took the melody to "Aura Lee" and changed them into the song "Love Me Tender" which was later recorded by Elivs, but it is 100% a Civil War period song.

@PuckRG Since the movie "Love Me Tender" was set during the Civil War (or just after) it's a shame they couldn't have left the song just the way it was. But I guess they figured El's fans wouldn't "get it,"

Actually it is a civil war era song. Elvis did "Love Me Tender" to the tune.

This would be accurate, cept the song Aura Lee isn't from the right time period. Elvis wrote it.
