I don't think that it's today generation of movie goer's who dislike a meaningful orchestral score - how could they? They hardly ever get a chance to hear one these days. No, the fault lies with lazy and out of touch marketing executives. They pepper today's films with music that they THINK the public would like to hear. Couple to that, the incessant pressure to provide a hit album and it is little wonder that the current generation have all but stopped collecting film scores.
once again, who ever that 1 dislike belonged to, they must be a douche-fag........
i think its called the " if you don't like this song, get the fuck off of youtube!" button.
if you don't know where that is, it's left of the "SHUT THE HELL UP!" button, right next to the "MIGHTY FAG" switch, and below of the "FUCK YOU!" key......
If there was ever a more beautiful piece of music to capture the essence of space (and remember this was 1967!) then i would like to hear it...........god bless you John
I love it how Mr. Barry, even though always using his classic Bond style, never created themes that were too similar to each other. He made each movie's atmosphere unique. Just listen to "Dawn Raid on Fort Knox" from Goldfinger, the underwater themes of "Thunderball", "Mountains and Sunsets" from You Only Live Twice, "Flight into Space" from Moonraker etc. Modern movies just simply lack the mystique and beauty with which he colored the classic Bond films.
@PeyserConley Well said, John Barry's fantastic music contributed hugely to the atmosphere of so many films. Imagine the earlier Bond films without his magical music.?! I can think of no other composer who comes close to matching Barry. His music stimulates the imagination, and captures the mood & atmosphere of each film, each scene perfectly. EVERY John Barry is my favorite! We have lost a true genius :(
Of course it's not what "today's generation movie-goers don't appreciate" that matters to hollywood's MBA accountant-executives. Their laziness when it comes to this is appalling, and subjects all of us to the equivalent of Greatest Hits compilations by established artists during films, instead of music that actually has something to do with what is happening on screen. Rant over.
I heard this music first on an episode of Top Gear, before I'd even seen You Only Live Twice. It is a testament to its true 'Bond-ness' that I instantly knew it must be from a Bond film - those brassy trumpets really give away its Barry genesis.
This is the kind of incidental music that made the Connery and some Moore Bond films great. We don't hear this beautiful orchestral music in today's Bond films because 1) John Barry's masterful soundtracks are no more and 2) much of today's generation movie-goers don't apprciate this type of music, but prefer that Jack White/Alicia Keys rap trash.
well i am "today's movie goers" but i appreciate this type of music but also think Hans Zimmer is great. The score for North By Northwest is by far one of the most intense ever.
Because you are obviously a person of good taste and intelligence, yet composers today create an abundance of classless music because that is what much of today's generation wants...or they wouldn't continue composing such trash. Notice in my email below, I said said "much" of today's generation, not all of it.
@TheKillCommander - You obviously have great taste and appreciation for quality music. You see, during the 1960s, music was the centerpiece for emotions in films. Today, films reply on special effects, not music. I prefer music over special effects any day, any time.
@DangerouslyYours i actually think that "night at the opera" from quantum of solace is an alright throwback to john barry style bond music. I do agree that these older soundtracks were better, but the two daniel craig movies are trying as hard as possible!
@DangerouslyYours i disagree moviegoers still like this kind of music..but the very nature of this kind of score music is easily unnoticed and dominated by the visual on screen this was the goal of score music in pre-mtv movie days..the score was not supposed to upstage film scene. That changed when MTV started producing film..some movies are now made almost purposely inferior to the score. I find that I prefer movies with scores like this. I guess i too watch for the score.

@raiderdan05 absolutely! It captures it so perfectly. 2:07 it stops. And then the haunting melody starts again, as if to go on forever into space...

John Barry. One of the greatest musical
genuises.
And one of the "spaciest" themes ever written!
Listen to Ladytron's "17" and see if they
didn't borrow from this!
And actually, "You Only Live Twice's"
"Capsule in Space" is 80% of this song...
