In an economic downturn spending and the national debt go up automatically as consequence of stabilizers such as unemployment insurance. The United States economy is interconnected with other economies around the world and so yes the Wall Street crash in 2008 had a negative effect on the rest of the world! It's not a question of production so much as its a question of demand. Corporations hire to meet demand. If people are out of work the demand isn't there.

@luvit I'm sorry for jumping in, our National Debt was an issue Long before May. In Feb. 2010, The Democrat Congress raised the debt ceiling by $2Tr. It took them a little over a year to blow through that. The expiration date on the 2010 "bump up" was known well in advance, but they chose not to push it through during the lame duck session in Dec. preferring to dump it in Boehner's lap hoping to make political hay. Search archived reports from last Dec. if you dont believe me. This was expected.

1) If you want to say that Bush is totally responsible for 5.07 TRILLION DOLLARS, in 8 years. OK. That would be 713 Billion per year.
2) In 1/1/09-1/1/11 The DEMOCRATS were in total control of The White House, Senate & The House. National Debt grew from 10.7 TRILLION to 14.0 TRILLION. Oblama & democrats are responsible for 3.3 Trillion Dollars in 2 years. Or 1 Trillion 650 Billion per year.
The democrat's statistics are more than twice that of Bush.

@Unklebillybob I think you're missing the point here. Just because the debt is rising does not mean it's a consequence of new programs enacted by congress or the President. In an economic downturn spending and the national debt go up automatically as consequence of stabilizers such as unemployment insurance. If you have high unemployment you have low tax revenue which means you have to borrow more money! This economic crisis was 10 years in the making it will take longer that 2 years to get out!
