Ok, I have this chip installed in my wii it was done in dec of 2009, now I am trying to play games like toy story 3 and it is saying that I need to update, but if I proceed it says that I have made an unauthorized modification to the system. Can I turn the drivekey chip off and update the wii (using an original wii game) or will it brick the wii as soon as I turn the chipset back on?
UPDATE!! DriveKey. Do not update wii to 4.3u what this does if you have mod chip, it removes access to japanese games and other regions, only USA Games work!!. I was already playing mario sports mix when i got updated from the Epic Mickey Video Game.

Yes the DriveKey works on Wii with the 4.3 firmware, for all region support GeckoOS is still required, right now there is not a way to install it on 4.3, but that should not take long.

The New Super Mario Bros is 4.1 from what we know, you might want to check in forums like wiinewz.com and make sure, but I am 99% sure USA New Super Mario Bros is 4.1 like the rest of the world, it's the only one we know of that is 4.1 and have been telling people to use it for ages now.
3.4, it reads the game, but then it just goes black. And this only occurs with the import games, my usa copys and stuff run fine, and i tryed a back up in my region and it booted too. So i'm not really sure what the issue is, do i need homebrew maybe?
3.4 is a really old firmware, that sounds like the problem. If your console is NTSC go and buy or rent the New Super Mario Bros game and it will update your Wii to 4.1, this should fix the black screen issue.

The problem is not with the DriveKey with the 4.2 update and the Wii itself, they wont be able to make an update for the DriveKey to fix the loss of all region because the problem is not with the DVD drive and the Wii motherboard, most people are installing the basic form of homebrew channel which lets you load apps from SD card, and then loading Gecko OS to play their out of region titles.
Question... is it safe to connect your chipped wii withdrivekey to internet not to update to 4.2 or anything but to get internet channal or connect 24??
the wii doesn't even know it has a chip in it. all it really does is insert a code into the datastream from the dvd player that makes the wii think it's an original disc. I have been using the internet to play backed up games for a while now without any problem. Unfortunately I updated to 4.2 without realizing the region problem.
the chip has nothing to do with copying games, it only makes the wii think that copied games are originals. there are only two ways to copy, one is to use the wii itself with special software loaded on it. The other is to buy a specific model of DVD drive that will recognize the wii format. Best thing to do for backing up your games is to download a copy of them and burn to disc so that if it gets ruined its only that copy and not the original.
So, I buy a wii, I check the firmware is not higher than 4.1, if so I put the drivekey between the wii motherboard and the DVD drive, boot up and can play downloaded games? As simple as that? If so I'm gonna buy myself a wee next week... Thanks for replying!

We don't recommend having any softmods installed with a hardware chip, we have seen problems before, like all region support not working. If you do install a USB loader with a DriveKey installed, just be prepared to maybe have some issues and do so at your own risk. :)
You do not need to disable the chip to do a Wii system update. But if you update over the net it will update to 4.2 firmware and you will loose all region support. Best to buy or rent the New Super Mario Bros which has the 4.1 update on the game, let it update and then don't update the Wii again.

Yes the DriveKey will let you play your original Canada games on an AU console, but you need to make sure the console is running firmware version 4.1 or lower, if it's 4.2 all region wont work with the DriveKey without using Gecko OS. To check what firmware version you have, go into the Wii system settings menu and it will display the firmware version on the screen.

I would say it's just the speed your hitting the button. You need to first have the Wii in standby mode with no disks in the console, then boot the console to the main menu, once at the main menu press the eject button 3x really fast, even hit it 4x or 5x to make sure the system receives the eject presses quick enough.

They are the same except for one thing, DriveKey has an advanced brick blocker and the Wasabi DX has a standard one, so I guess we would have to say DriveKey is the better chip.
They work on any version firmware, but currently 4.2 disables all region support, so you wont be able to play PAL games for the time being, there has been talk StartPatch v4.2.2 can re-enable it.

Hardmods are always going to be better. with softmods, some games don't work quite as they should and some just don't work at all. When you hardmod your wii, every game you try will work. there have been problems with super mario galaxy, super smash bros brawl and I believe mario kart wii, but I think they have all been fixed now. The only downside to hardmodding your Wii is that if you get a soldered chip (which this one is not) then you run the risk or screwing up your Wii, obviously.

I have the exact same problem! Ive tried everything, fliped the chip, change the dip switch i even used a different drive cable, but it will not load the drivekey menu, or load back ups. Hitting the reset or eject doesnt do anything. I can see the red light come on to the drivekey, but it still says error check manual. Any ideas?
Damn I follow every instruction, but when I'm about to play the game it doesn't work. Like it show the Import game icon and then when i press play it turn off my controller and screen went black, but the system its still on. I was trying to play Hajime no ippo revolution that I brought from japan.
Hey, I burned the new Punchout, with my DriveKey installed. I burned the ISO file to a dvd-r, with ImgBurn. When I put it into my Wii, it showed up as a system update. When I went to launch it, it said that it would perform a system update, and any unauthorized technical changes to the wii might be incompatible. I turned off my wii, and didn't continue. What does this mean?

got mine today, dont be a spaz like me, Read the manual/drive key I put it in the wrong way and didnt do the dip switch. THEN i set it to wrong country. then i got it right.... feeling like a total tard i was happy 2 see it work. access the menu is 3 fast clicks of eject. like ur tapping ur finger on the desk kind of speed
It depends on the video, ones that are not compressed much and have a really high data rate may struggle, but most are ok. We have only heard a few reports of video cut scenes in games becoming choppy.

If you have a D2C drive for sure, then you should buy the Solderless WiiKey 2, it is cheaper than DriveKey and is able to read at full 6x speed where the DriveKey only reads at 3x. Not that the read rate is a major issue, but if you can get something slightly better and cheaper you should do that. The updates are mainly to fix bugs with the chip and improve compatibility.
You should only use Verbatim DVD -R brand disks from what we have seen, other brands seem to cause problems, your more than welcome to try other brands of disks, but if you have any problems you need to buy Verbatim DVD -R

If your original and backup games work, but you get the error trying to enter the config menu there might be something wrong with the chip. If your original and backup games don't work, then there is possibly something wrong with your ribbon cable. You need to contact where you bought the chip for support

Opening the case would void the warranty, but with saying that we have not heard of many Wii consoles that have needed to be sent back under warranty, the drives will last at least until the warranty runs out, so voiding the warranty is not to much of an issue.
The Solderless WiiKey 2 is still the best chip, but not by much. The WiiKey 2 works better with GameCube games, but not many people are worried about that, and the WiiKey 2 has 6x speed where the DriveKey is only 3x speed, but that only really affects some games that have highly uncompressed video cut scenes which is not that many. If you have a Wii that was bought after Sept 08 the best choice is DriveKey, if you have a Wii bought before Sept 08 the Solderless WiiKey 2 would be the best option.
I was playing my games with the backup launcher which I patched to a 249 and they all played fine. Just installed the new 4x drive key and it will not play the copies that are patched with 249. So needless to say had to download the games all over. I thought the chip was bad but just was the patch on the games. Just thought I would put this comment so people dont rack their brains out trying to figure why they wont play.

You can play backups of original games you own, and games from other regions if the firmware is 4.1 or lower.
But if you buy your Wii now you can't use DriveKey, have a read of the warning message on our DriveKey page.

Damn I follow every instruction, but when I'm about to play the game it doesn't work. Like it show the Import game icon and then when i press play it turn off my controller and screen went black, but the system its still on. I was trying to play Hajime no ippo revolution that I brought from japan.

I can not get into the save settings button !
Pressing the reset button I'n able to navigate the menu, but there's no way to focus the button. Any idea ?

Hey, I burned the new Punchout, with my DriveKey installed. I burned the ISO file to a dvd-r, with ImgBurn. When I put it into my Wii, it showed up as a system update. When I went to launch it, it said that it would perform a system update, and any unauthorized technical changes to the wii might be incompatible. I turned off my wii, and didn't continue. What does this mean?

Ok, I fixed this by setting the Update Blocker to All, but now when I try to play, I get a black screen.

It was removed, we are not sure why because all it showed was how to install hardware on the Wii, anyway, you can download the full hi-res version from the drivekey page on our site, the link is in the "more info" tap on the top right, also the link to our drivekey page is at the end of this video

got mine today, dont be a spaz like me, Read the manual/drive key I put it in the wrong way and didnt do the dip switch. THEN i set it to wrong country. then i got it right.... feeling like a total tard i was happy 2 see it work. access the menu is 3 fast clicks of eject. like ur tapping ur finger on the desk kind of speed

It depends on the video, ones that are not compressed much and have a really high data rate may struggle, but most are ok. We have only heard a few reports of video cut scenes in games becoming choppy.

Hey there. I've got a D2C wii and the drivekey installed. I've tryed to burn a game into MEDION DVD+R but it gives me an error. Does the Verbatim dvd-r work ?
I've got a LG dvd recorder.

You can't use DVD +R media, it must be DVD -R and Verbatim brand.

Hi again. Bought the Verbatim DVD-R's and recorded it with 4x speed. The game appears but after I start the game it turns into a black screen and the game doesn't start. Any ideas?

I notice that on japan imports like Naruto 4
there is no music at all and it's the real game
too what's the deal with the drive key not letting
music on Gamecube import games?It seems
the Gamecube compatibility is a little suspect
considering this is not a problem on other Modchips like Wii key.

It's because the DriveKey does not have the GC audio fix like the WiiKey 2 has.

first off great videos!!! but i wanna know 1 thing you were talking about the chip having problems with certain media what i would like to know is Taiyo Yuden dvd-r of course an acceptable disc for the drivekey or wiikey 2. o and one more question is the solderless wiikey 2 just a wiikey 2 with a solderless clip attached i was unaware of the release of a solderless wiikey 2 i'm looking for the best and easiest install for a suspected D2C wii going to be my first modded wii then many others :) TY

i know for sure mine is a D2C chip did the serial checker again 100% chance o is there any updates for the drivekey or solderless wiikey2 out at the moment n what exactly are the updates to the chips themselves for? I assume that they're for when Big N updates the consoles to a point where the chips don't work then update chip so it will again right? and will it brick wii to do a regular update required by the N i.e updating from 3.3 to 3.4. lol sorry guess i had more questions than i thought TY

If you have a D2C drive for sure, then you should buy the Solderless WiiKey 2, it is cheaper than DriveKey and is able to read at full 6x speed where the DriveKey only reads at 3x. Not that the read rate is a major issue, but if you can get something slightly better and cheaper you should do that. The updates are mainly to fix bugs with the chip and improve compatibility.

You should only use Verbatim DVD -R brand disks from what we have seen, other brands seem to cause problems, your more than welcome to try other brands of disks, but if you have any problems you need to buy Verbatim DVD -R

If your original and backup games work, but you get the error trying to enter the config menu there might be something wrong with the chip. If your original and backup games don't work, then there is possibly something wrong with your ribbon cable. You need to contact where you bought the chip for support

Opening the case would void the warranty, but with saying that we have not heard of many Wii consoles that have needed to be sent back under warranty, the drives will last at least until the warranty runs out, so voiding the warranty is not to much of an issue.

The Solderless WiiKey 2 is still the best chip, but not by much. The WiiKey 2 works better with GameCube games, but not many people are worried about that, and the WiiKey 2 has 6x speed where the DriveKey is only 3x speed, but that only really affects some games that have highly uncompressed video cut scenes which is not that many. If you have a Wii that was bought after Sept 08 the best choice is DriveKey, if you have a Wii bought before Sept 08 the Solderless WiiKey 2 would be the best option.

I was playing my games with the backup launcher which I patched to a 249 and they all played fine. Just installed the new 4x drive key and it will not play the copies that are patched with 249. So needless to say had to download the games all over. I thought the chip was bad but just was the patch on the games. Just thought I would put this comment so people dont rack their brains out trying to figure why they wont play.
