Had the honor of seeing these guys twice back in the 80's, the first time at some night club down at Jones Beach on Long Island N.Y., second time in New York City at Roseland. These boys were heavily underated through thier career and that was such a travisty.
see them live at essex uni in 80 s 2 times and domiian theater london.there just awsome,we spoke to eddie to after show he is so cool and down to earth, this takes me back in time when i had no worrys, lol this song makes ya happy too
Yes they say ISRAEL...here are part of the Lyrics: Africana, African and white You're closer than you really ever know And we all run the risk of To remain silent I don't know Life is a fever is real Life is a fever is real We need your faith and hostility To be certain of a change And could you ever recover from Forever recover from this prejudice Life is a fever Isreal Life is a fever Iseral My life is just a fever My life is just a fever My life is just a fever
Great band, no pretentiousness here. Brilliant at the Phil recently and looking forward to future show again at the Phil. Can our Ian have his guitar back now Gary?
this song changed my life....i saw them in my early twenties. the bass line is simply killer and his vocals have always been not fabulous but interesting and they carry they band..
@ranjitb68 life was simpler in the 60's partner..............no cell phones, no computers, no I Pods, no I phones, just gas selling for 38 cents per gallon. making 75 cents per hour on the job, and that was pretty good pay in 1968. Although I thought the 80's were pretty special and very busy with all that was going on in my life.......
i remember sitting in my house when i was 16, just chillin listening to gary playing the piano, we were one of the only familys to own a piano in those days, great days, me and gary and danny hennigan hitch hiked from kirkby to cardiff to see hawkwind, ha ha , crazy days dayo.
They still sound awesome after all these years! I wish they would perform in the US so I can see them! I love all their songs, always gives a happy vibe to it!
Just seen them live(08/08/09) at Fort Perch Rock, New Brighton. Great outdoor venue, great gig! going to see them again at The Cavern in December.....
Just in the process of converting all my old videos now. Got nearly every ORS TOTP and Wogan, Bliss etc appearance from the early 80s. Great band. Will upload em all when i find out how. Got Red Sails from ORS too.
wish they would come to AMERICA and tour, minnesota would be great but I know I will be dreaming and thats the way it is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,still I listen to China Crises daily
Never saw them live...and yet i played that first album for days when I was eighteen. They were grim times and I credit them with getting me through. Thanks Gary, thanks Eddie.
I'm a Scouser and therefore have a slight understanding of the accent and I'd confidently say that it's 'Life is a fever in Israel'. However I know Eddies brother and I'll ask him and get back with the definitive answer.
Yeah sounds close to that..maybe it's their accent thats making it harder to understand...not totally convinced yet but thanks for your input...I can see how this is starting to evolve into a minor mystery to all of us ...lol
@ranjitb68 The chorus to the song is "life is a favour in Israel" The song is about Israel's support for apartheid in the early 80s. African and White was written by China Crisis in order to protest Israel's support of apartheid in South Africa. That's the significance of "Israel" in the lyrics.
My recollection from the time was "new" was that it was a protest song about the apparant support that Isreal was giving to the aparthied regime in SA... that's what Isreal has to do with it.
The lyric is apparantly "Life is just favour of Isreal"... but I think they play with the words throughout the song and in different perfomances of it. (Fever, Favour, Is Real, it's real, Isreal etc)
They should have had a long long career in rock. I saw them support Simple Minds in '82 and went off to see them again next year, this time with Howard Jones supporting them! The album Difficult Shapes and Passive Rythms (some people think it's fun to entertain) was THE BEST album of 1982.
Blinding track from one of the most under rated bands of the 80's.Such a subtle sound.I think I'll be digging out the five albums I've got of theirs,as I had forgotten how good they were.

The lyrics maybe " live is a fever of Ishmael." Ishmael was the son of Abraham who was cast out after the birth of Isaac. That's my guess.
Great song, would love to see these guys live.
