I think Quebec, Hartford, and Winnipeg lost their team...because without a new arena, the NHL couldn't sell the naming rights to a major corperation...that would pay huge money for....and I am sure Bettman (who is a politician) would've gotten a cut of.....
Phoenix, Denver, and Raleigh all opened arenas with corperate names...and I'm sure those corporations gave Bettman a cut of money to move a few franchises.
no this vid is propaganda intended to make people think they lost their team because the players fought too often. The real reason why Nordiques relocated to Colorado is because they were expecting to start losing money after the 1995 season and needeed a new arena (with more seats and more corporate lounges) financed by government to survive. The owners chosen to sell the team before they start losing money instead of waiting 2 years until gov decide if team is viable anymore in Quebec city
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Totally disagree.
1) Quebec was always losing money the day they joined the NHL. Their TV contract was among the worst in sports, and that if anything is what really killed the Nords.
2) That arena was build around WW2 and was never intended to house an NHL team.
3) They didn't have the full support of Canada or any big business. The Nords in way hung themselves for big support when they wanted to break free of Canada and become their own country.
there were studies claiming that they even made profits from 90-91 season to 94-95 season, as small as they might be. This is why many Nords fans hate Marcel Aubut for selling the team, because they think he could have waited a bit longer. Whether if they really lost money (according to medias) is true or not is something we may never know. For sure, if they really lost money in their last seasons, it was most likely much less than Phoenix currently does.
Your Retarded? Quebec waiting support from Canada ??? LE COLISÉE was in better shape than the Buffalo Sabres was or Hartford Whalers was , the Nordiques TV contrat was = or better than montreal Canadien in 1990
The Nords had a crap contract partly because no one cared about watching the Nords as much as watching the Habs. The Nords were an afterthought, and don't get me wrong, I liked them and despise the Habs. But truth be told the Nords were broke from the beginning, that arena was a WW2 shanty of an arena that barely got approval when they entered the NHL.
The Quebec Nordiques formed as one of the original World Hockey Association teams in 1972. The franchise was originally awarded to a group in San Francisco, as the San Francisco Sharks. However, the San Francisco group's funding collapsed prior to the start of the first season, and the WHA hastily sold the organization to a group of six Quebec City-based businessmen who owned the highly profitable Quebec Remparts junior team. From Wikipedia. ALWAYS THE SHARKS!!!!

Quebec, Winnipeg, Hamilton are all places that need a team ASAP. Then maybe hartford. They may draw fewer fans than the others but it will not be as bad as it is in other cities like Atlanta and New Jersey. Heck, NJ can't even sellout a Devils vs Habs or Devils vs Rangers game
Im a hardcore Colorado Avalanche fan and have been since they came to Colorado. now hockey being in a place like Denver was a great move because there is a rabid hockey fanbase down there. We have the consecutive sellout record for a reason.if the Nordiques were gonna move anywhere Colorado was perfect. now teams like Nashville and Columbus? they dont deserve teams.I say bring back the Jets and Whalers and a brand New Quebec Nordiques team to replace thouse southeastern teams that suck.
Dont be joking come on for the past 5 seasons here every games were sold out including all playoffs game so idk where you took your record but it mut be from an amateur site...
its a faact. if you ever paid attention youd know that. what you watch tv and see a packed house at a Canadiens game and think they sell it out. they may have come close but they dont hold the record..like i said look it up
Colorado indeed got the longest consecutive sellouts streak. Even Minnesota needs at least 2 or 3 more seasons to break the record. Colorado has good fan support (today not as much but the economy doesn't help and it's much better than in Nashville/Columbus and Atlanta. If we get a team back in Quebec City we should take what they will give us, even if it's a shit team. At least the new owners may know better their hockey and eventually get this team to win with the years
5 seasons isnt the equivalent to the amount of games Colorado sold out. if you didnt know they had the record then your ignorant. Anyone who pays attention to hockey knows that.
its a shame they had to leave , and what annoys me is that people like garry betman say oh the population is too small in quebec to support a team. but look at columbus . they have even less people then quebec . i garuntee you if the quebec nordiques came back they would not have a problem filling seats .
Definitly just look how montreal fill up there seats.Quebec fans are even more hockey maniacs they diserve a new nhl team. And from my heart i belive that 1 day the nordiques will be back
true, population won't matter if it's over 300000 Imho. Some teams has millions of people around and still draw flies at their games. It's the love for hockey that counts. In southern USA people prefer baseball to hockey and in Canada people prefer hockey to baseball
Quebec should recieve an expansion team but to get one they need to build a new arena. The NHL would gladly return but the arena is the deal breaker between the two it seems.
Yeah I think if the city of Quebec promised to buuild a arena then the NHL would ok playing in the old pepso coliseum for a couple years while the new arena is being built. Owners have basicly said this would be ok.
and yes Pepsi Coliseum is unfit and cannot generate enough sponsor/commercial revenues even if sold out. At least I hope QUebec doesn't do the same mistake than Winnipeg by building a smaller arena than the old one, not meeting NHL standards lol
There has been discussion about Nordik Project in St Augustin De Desmaures (sub city in quebec city) near the airport, and the first thing to be built would be a 18000 seats arena to meet NHL standards. In the future the arena could be expanded to 22000.
However, I don't know how serious are those people and if they will be able to get all the money required to do it.
I'm sure the team would get awesome fan support, altough it will not be the same anymore without Sakic
Well from what I hear " inside stuff " is that the NHL wants would like to expand in 2 more areas. One more team in the east and one more in the west. If Quebec gets its ducks in a row the NHL WANTS TO put a team in Quebec. The NHL would also very much like to put a team in Houston and the NHL has already said Houston has one of the best NHL/Basketball venues in the world. Problem is no one in Houston has a group thinking about hockey or wanting to get involved in hockey. So we'll see.
yeah they really need to put the teams into places that care about hockey. In Canada it's almost said that hockey is a religion. A team will not make playoffs and finish last for 5 years in a row and they will still fill their buildings at 90-100%.
Yeah if they could and make sure they would financally successful they would put teams in Quebec and Winnipeg but as has been said canada is such a socialist country that its provinces have to depend on the government far to much. So when its time to pay bills and compete for better players these teams JUST CAN'T. EDmonton and Montral have but only because thier larger provinces.
actually he isn't phrasing himself properly. In no way we will be able to bring back the old nords here in Qc. They do fine in colorado, it's almost always full at the games. To get a team again it would either have to be an expansion or a team located in a town that doesn't care about hockey. We still need a new arena though...
lol Quebec Citadelles. They really fucked with us with that team. Whoever got the idea of putting Montreal Habs school team in a city that hated Habs? No wonder why attendance was so poor.
Being a supposedly small market is not an issue. Think of Trailblazers or Sacramento Kings that are still here meanwhile LA does not have an NFL franchise.
To me, the biggest issue would be patience. Can an investor put 300 M bucks today on the table knowing perfectly that in the first five or ten years, he will lose money?
Now Charlotte has a NBA franchise, and Oklahoma City will have its one in a short time, so nothing's impossible.
I am 100% sure that Quebec will have a hockey franchise soon. They are actually talking about building an arena. And to all vieweres who are talking bad about the city of quebec, you should visit one day. Its the most beautiful city in Canada !!! Has lots of history, la belle vieille capitale !
c ben plate mais a part que la bataille du vendredi saint en avril 1984 .......et les frères stasny (les main-events des Nrdiques selon les gérants d'estrades lol!!!) le hockey na jamais suscité un grand intérêt dans la vielle capitale
judging by the fan base of people who have adopted the Montreal Canadians in Quebec, i doub that the Nordiques will return. It's too much money for a team these days. In other words, les Nors ne retournerais pas. :P
fuck off ass hole jamess699....quebec is the greatest place to play in the world men...you never go there and you know nothing about us....Quebec and Canada rules
I can see Hamilton or Winnipeg getting an NHL team, but never quebec because first of all quebec as a province sux, and no player wannts to player there (like Canadians)
I think you just don't have any idea of what you're talking about...
If you know a bit about marketing or if you do a little research about the market in Quebec city you'll discover that Quebec was almost always SOLD OUT for their games. The problem was not the city but the NHL.
By the way... Ask Sakic, Sundin, Forsberg and even Owen Nolan what they tought about Quebec... It's a nice city to play hockey.
Do you want to know the real reason why Quebec lost the nordiques? Because its too small a market to cater to a professional sports team. Fighting has NOTHING to do with their departure.
Considering the Colisée was full at 94% (often maxed out) for 5 years before they left If we had the money to get a new arena with more seats I'm sure a hockey club would do pretty fine here
I,m Torn When It Comes To This Issue Because While I Love The Province Of Quebec And I Was And Still Am A Nords & Habs Fan. I Have Some Family In Denver And Like Them, I Like The Av's, So While I Hated To See Quebec Lose There Team Due To A Biased Man Named Bettman, I Gained A Team In Denver Which Is Not To Bad Of A City Itself. But I Hope Somebody From The Sun Belt Region (Nashville,Anaheim,Florida) Moves To Quebec.
Good Jocke: Quebec lost his team because they fighted to much?? haha. i d like it when they NEW NHL would fight a bit more.
If the Nordiques would have had a Good Goalie, they would have been in the Play offs for at least the last four seasons. They got more firepower than any other team i know now. I think just the Avs from 2001 had more firepower.
patrick roy agreed to be traded to the avs when they moved because he vowed to canadiens fans that he would never play for the nords even though he is FROM QUEBEC CITY.
Quebec lost their team due to skyrocketing salaries, an old and delapidated rink, and too small a market. Very similar reasons to why Pittsburgh risk losing their team.
true, and that's a feat considering it's just pee wee. Remparts (junior hockey team) attendance average at 12000 per game. If a junior hockey team get that many visitors today, imagine how many would a new NHL team get. The only thing that caused the team to move is the increasing salaries and the government not wanting to finance the build of a new arena with more seats.
Quebec would have won the Stanley Cup with or without Roy, stating that a team died because they fighted is retarded.. The only reason they died is because of financial problems... And besides, who cares fighting is part of the game for a player to fight they both have to agree on it meaning that no one is innocent therefore ur argument = wrong
I'm a Sabres fan and I miss the Nordiques for this!

actually he isn't phrasing himself properly.

Has lots of history, la belle vieille capitale !
kevkan1974 4 years ago
You're kidding, right? As beautiful as it is, it's way too tiny to support an NHL team in this day in age.
Winnipeg & Hamilton could both do better.

judging by the fan base of people who have adopted the Montreal Canadians in Quebec, i doub that the Nordiques will return. It's too much money for a team these days. In other words, les Nors ne retournerais pas. :P

I can see Hamilton or Winnipeg getting an NHL team, but never quebec because first of all quebec as a province sux, and no player wannts to player there (like Canadians)
james699 4 years ago
I think you just don't have any idea of what you're talking about...
If you know a bit about marketing or if you do a little research about the market in Quebec city you'll discover that Quebec was almost always SOLD OUT for their games. The problem was not the city but the NHL.
By the way... Ask Sakic, Sundin, Forsberg and even Owen Nolan what they tought about Quebec... It's a nice city to play hockey.

Do you want to know the real reason why Quebec lost the nordiques? Because its too small a market to cater to a professional sports team. Fighting has NOTHING to do with their departure.
FriendlyWalrus 4 years ago

I think just the Avs from 2001 had more firepower.

drake426 5 years ago
Quebec lost their team due to skyrocketing salaries, an old and delapidated rink, and too small a market. Very similar reasons to why Pittsburgh risk losing their team.
senorsoupe 5 years ago
In fact, there is a huge market for Hockey in Quebec City. We even reach 8 000 000 visitors for the International Pee Wee Tournament, in 61 years.
DrowRanger2006 5 years ago
true, and that's a feat considering it's just pee wee. Remparts (junior hockey team) attendance average at 12000 per game. If a junior hockey team get that many visitors today, imagine how many would a new NHL team get. The only thing that caused the team to move is the increasing salaries and the government not wanting to finance the build of a new arena with more seats.
xlibman 4 years ago
Pittsburgh is doing great...
Luftwaffel 4 years ago
They are doing well now, where were their so called "fans," when Lemeiux was gone and before Crosby came? Certainly not at the Mellon arena.

This isn't the reason Quebec lost the Nordiques. This was actually a really good reason to GO SEE a Nordiques game.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA VERY NICE COMMENT !!!

Quebec would have won the Stanley Cup with or without Roy, stating that a team died because they fighted is retarded.. The only reason they died is because of financial problems... And besides, who cares fighting is part of the game for a player to fight they both have to agree on it meaning that no one is innocent therefore ur argument = wrong
liquid9059 5 years ago
Lemieux and Ozonlish never played with Quebec, that said Quebec had an excellent team when they left.
