When this young lady first came on the scene she played Bb trumpet (the family car of the trumpet world). The Haydn is a difficult challenge on Bb, so it is not surprising that she is performing here on an Eb trumpet (one of the sports cars of the trumpet world), and an instrument that is much more agile than the Bb. Since the Haydn is written in the key of Eb, using Eb trumpet gives the player a much easier task placing the piece in C major on the instrument. And, at 14, she plays pretty well.

@TheAndrew057 I can actually give you some advise on this part. Practicing is not near as important as a regular schedual.... its bether to play 4days 15min then 1 day 1 hour for example. Though I myself play atleast one hour a day. What to play is arguable but its good to just play alot of music scales(every song and every hard ridle usualy is based on some sort of music scale)...
regarding the trumpet and mouthpiece part, this is really personal. Go to a music store and try all.

Also I almost marched Spirit in 09 but I had to drop the contract for financial reasons. Judging by your name you marched SCV or SCVC?

Elsewhere on Youtube there are negative comments from so called experts regarding her playing including the mouthpiece position. Utter rubbish, many players play slightly off centre for a smoother tone.

What the higher horn gives is 1. greater agility and response, 2. the tessitura is lower in the overtone series, which facilitates greater accuracy, and 3. the piece is now in C major on the instrument--no sharps, no flats.

@madra1997 It's an Eb trumpet for those who do not know. Trumpets are pitched in many keys, although usually only employed by orchestral players. Trumpets are made in A, Bb, C, D, Eb, E, F, G, and Piccolo trumpets in A, Bb, and C.

I'm not as amazed at Melissa's talent on the horn as I am with people like Kawisakixr14. A person that can't spell, construct a proper sentence or convey a focused thought but has the audacity to slam a beautiful talented young woman. It must be tough going through life with such a cynical mind.
Wow, I auditioned on this concerto for my acceptance into university. She has great facility on the trumpet! Now I am a high school music teacher, it would be a dream to have a student who could play as professionally and with such beautiful tone as Melissa!
Nobody said she was the best in the world. Her exceptionalism manifests itself with no need for hyperbole. No, she isn't the best in the world..but one day she might be. She obviously is very talented and willing to work hard at her playing. I say BRAVO for her.
And for the record, those who havent played this song, the song isnt overly difficult, it is fairly repetitive, the really only challenging part would be the cadenza, but that can be played however you want so kinda reduces the challenge. However the First Movement is much more techinacally challenging and is well worth playing, she does extremely well on that one as well.
Well I must say, for someone her age that was a mighty fine performance, she really does have talent. Interesting arrangement I must say, but there are several variations of the classic haydn concerto. I dont know for sure but she must have started playing when she was really young, and had a personal teacher from the start. I wish I was as lucky as her, although playing for 19 years and having formal training of my own. She is probably best of her age group,but definately not best in the world.
She is amazing, she has the potential to be one of the best classical musicians in recent times. Although, some could argue that she has already achieved this, and they have very good reason for said argument.

It doesn't increase range, makes mobility a bit easier in a different register, it's an Eb trumpet.

Nobody said she was the best in the world. Her exceptionalism manifests itself with no need for hyperbole. No, she isn't the best in the world..but one day she might be. She obviously is very talented and willing to work hard at her playing. I say BRAVO for her.

And for the record, those who havent played this song, the song isnt overly difficult, it is fairly repetitive, the really only challenging part would be the cadenza, but that can be played however you want so kinda reduces the challenge. However the First Movement is much more techinacally challenging and is well worth playing, she does extremely well on that one as well.

Well I must say, for someone her age that was a mighty fine performance, she really does have talent. Interesting arrangement I must say, but there are several variations of the classic haydn concerto. I dont know for sure but she must have started playing when she was really young, and had a personal teacher from the start. I wish I was as lucky as her, although playing for 19 years and having formal training of my own. She is probably best of her age group,but definately not best in the world.

She is amazing, she has the potential to be one of the best classical musicians in recent times. Although, some could argue that she has already achieved this, and they have very good reason for said argument.

WOW. I thought that she only played slow things, and I was thinking 'Oh, I can play those... not as well, but I can...' Then I saw this and I thought 'well. that's that then. she's THE best trumpet player for her age I've ever seen.'
