i found an off brand-strat copy with a plywood body. it was about as heavy as a non-chambered les paul! yeah, it was a 'trinity river' electric strat copy. the specs say it has a alder body, but it was plywood when i opened it up. the plywood was very high quality, too. seems it would be cheaper and easier on tools to use basswood, so plywood makes no sense unless it's going to 2nd as a canoe paddle. i've read that the very early squires had plywood bodies, but that ended in the mid 1980's.
cort is one of the companies contracted to make some fender squire models. none of the current fender squires have plywood bodies. these guitars now have basswood bodies. there's nothing wrong with using basswood for a solidbody guitar. the paisley fender teles and the james burton tele both have basswood bodies, and are premium made-in-the-usa fender made. the reason a new squire can sell for $120 at g.c. is because the people who made them are only being paid around 30 cents an hour.
Cort used to make really nice underrated guitars.. until they started to move everything to indonesia and china.. then their quality went to shite.. even their korean made ones... now noone wants to play a cort..
FYI many people smuggled Seymour Duncan pickups that should have been used for Cort guitars. I get several of JB and 59 for a price waay below regular price. Wactch out Cort you are being corrupted by your own people.
In Korea, not many stores carry Cort guitars anymore. It's a good thing too, I saw a Cort guitar in Osaka and it practically looked fake with the veneer. Proper flamed maple or quilted maple tops should change in hues when you moved it around a light, not look like it was just printed on. It was being sold as much as a high end Fender or Ibanez.
I bought a GENE SIMMONS CORT.It sounds & feels o.k not too bad BUT the Rosewood Fretboard has all these little white streaks in it & i can see & feel that the Cort Punisher is not a quality instrument. Its no better then an SX bass that costs about $100 but the Punisher costs 5 times as much as an SX Bass.Ive noticed that Cort has given GS a license too sell a piece of crap for $500.Looks good on the surface but look closer & you will see inconsistence in the bass.
This in Indonesia. Almost all producer nowadays practicing to use cheap labor & manufacturing from East & Southeast Asia to produce even Greater production output & profit margin. Supported by making a 'Special' line of guitars that said to be using a same amount of QC like the original product but
1. How about the inconsistency by using a lot of wood pieces even in the neck?
2. Do you forget that factory like in this video producing not only one, single brand but a tons of?
they got really bad quality guitars... I thougth they were awesome when I saw the guitars because they had nice paint job but at moment when I plugged it in to an amp it was worst guitar I have ever heard.... well not as bad as Chinese guitars sold in ebay but yeah.
Perhaps someone with knowlege about this can help explain something. Why take a slab of wood that is large enough to make a body from, cut into two pieces, glue and clamp back together, store for a few more months, then carve it into a body? What purpose does that serve? Why cut and glue? Just make the damn thing from one solid peice. No glue. Is that too simple?
All the Cort Korean made Fender Squier guitars from 1990 - 1995 with the Black Squier logo are MADE OF PLYWOOD!! Don't think so? Open the Trem plate and scratch off some finish vertically and learn. If the Strat Squier Sunburst finish model has black edge sprayed into the Contour relief cut areas at the hip and arm - it's PLYWOOD! They were hiding the wood edge.
Even Mexican Fenders are made out of a 9-piece laminate or "plywood" body. If you check Mexican Fender's burst finishes they have the same solid finish on the sides and shoulders to hide the 9-piece laminate body.
@Lestat5588 You're full of chit. I've owned a few MIM Strats and Telecasters, worked on dozens of them, all made from the late 80's through current models and have never seen a "Plywood" body Mex Fender! I've also toured the Ensenada factory twice as a guest of Fender (because I have a repair and restoration business) and never saw a plywood body at that factory!
To show how little you know what the hell you're talking about, it takes 16 to 18 laminated layers to make a full thickness body!
Workers are beaten and thrashed if they do not handle the guitar properly. A woman even stated that if a worker falls holding the guitar, people run over to see if the guitar is okay.
I bet the guy that speaks in the factory facts thing is asian. :P

john larravee personally hand paints all his sunburst-finished guitars.

Does anyone notice the ligt in the factory is always the same and too bright?
It seems they used studio lighting to light the subjects, so I think everything there is damn dark.
It almost looks like this is staged...

I like Cort guitars, but since I've heard they keep workers in poor labor conditions, I feel guilty by owning one...
These folks should really review their policy with their workers: they're doing a great job so it's not fair for them!
