Personally I feel dog breeding has mixed ethical consequences its hard to conclude whether its right or wrong. I don't feel it's a necessity so with the benefit of a doubt perhaps it would be best to not buy from breeders.
I have been to many shelters, I did not know that there were so many breeders of mixed breed dogs out there. Obviously I have been misled by the AKC and the whole purebred thing. I did not know that all the dogs in the shelters that do not look like any sort of breed were bred by breeders.
So, the dog bought from the breeder hasn't got a right to live either? Let's not treat these guys as though they were commodities, i buy Jiffy so Peter Pan loses money. Honestly, PETA, get a frigging grip.
Nope. The breeder keeps the unwanted dogs until someone DOES want them. But if breeders see these videos, it might inspire them to stop breeding in the first place.
Oh my god, i hate this! Its not true. I got my dog for a animal care center that ur MENT to buy dogs from there. And they get newted before u by them. :)
if you were not going to adopt a dog anyway, you might as well get a dog from a breeder. they too need good homes. just make sure it is a responsible breeder. i will adopt some of my dogs and get others of them from breeders. BUT NEVER PET STORES!
why do breeders have to breed dogs just so those puppies are sold to be used in dog fights, dumped in the street, or simply suffer for the rest of their lives...
Not surprising that such a skewed idea came from PETA. Wanna know what the REAL problem is? Irresponsible pet owners, petstores who support puppy mills and backyard breeders, and people who purchase animals when it's a baby and it's cute. I'm all for adoption, I've adopted myself, but it's 100% WRONG AND UNFAIR to blame breeders for this problem. Get a life PETA, and stop putting out such skewed perceptions! Do some damn research!
If people are so against killing DOGS, why dont they care about the chickens, cows, and pigs they're killing by EATING them???? ALL animals deserve rights.
@TheLuluBrown that is pretty much why peta has its own website with and organization that deals with animal rights for ALL animals. -.- do research. this is just ONE of its amazing and supporting videos although i do not agree with blaming ALL of this on the breeder. as bela0nna is right about it is some ppl's fault for not caring.
@eques101 I see what you're trying to say, but if less people bought from breeders, the less they would breed. And if they can't sell their puppies/kittens because everyone's adopting.. then off to the shelter those puppies go to get adopted.
There is no way of knowing for sure that the pups you just sold wont end up in a shelter. I volunteer at my local shelter and over half the dogs that come in are from owners who suddenly don't have the time for them anymore. They bought a puppy because it was cute, and now that it weighs 40 pounds, they don't think it's so cute anymore. "Responsible" breeding or not, it's killing shelter dogs' chances. They were once a cute pup like the one you're about to buy so adopt, don't shop.
@jp03921 Actually, I would say that the blame resides more on backyard breeders and irresponsible pet owners and pet stores, than breeders. Good breeders work very hard to make sure their pups have the best chance at a forever home. Our local shelter has seen quite a number of dogs and cats who were adopted out, only to be returned later. It's the pet owners that are the biggest problem, not the breeders.
@screamhappythings ..."nice fresh dog"? It's like you're buying a new pair of jeans or some fresh food -__-; I've always adopted my pets right from the streets and they're happy.
Great way of getting the point accross BUT equally, you could say that rescue shelters are full because people are dim/ selfish / gullible enough to buy dogs without any proper consideration about what a dog is...and there are enough greedy people out there to prey on their ignorance. There are some good breeders out there who health-test, never have to advertise and would never sell a pup to someone who just wanted a substitue child or ego-booster.
I am not going to feel guilty for buying my dog from a breeder where the dogs were outside running and playing all day, and sleeping on cozy beds indoors. When my family was looking for a dog no shelters we called had any puppies.
I'm not being made to feel guilty because I bought my pup from a breeder. I don't know about in America, but in the UK it's so damned difficult to adopt a dog. We weren't accepted at any shelter because my daughter is 14 months old. I want my kids to grow up around a dog, I've waited 10 years for the right time for a dog and I'm not prepared to wait another 8 years because rescue homes deem my kids unsuitable.
For those who don't think that adopting from anywhere other than a shelter or rescue group kills animals, i invite you to do this. Go to your local shelter and sit in its admissions or surrender area for a few hours, IF you can stomach that long. I think you'll get the idea after that.
what a load of horse shit, i cant but a dame pup without someone telling me some other dog is going to die from my choice, and there are saying I GOT HIM KILLED?!?the people that abuse them and the dickheads that put them in gas chambers kill them not me......ass-hats.
i agree with buying dogs in shelters, however what happens to the dogs that the breeders can't sell? don't they go to shelters after? so in the long run why not buy from a breeder? if you get the right breeder you get a good pet, and that is one less dog running the street, or going to a shelter
WTF? I know you're trying to use guilt/scare tactics. but this is ridiculous! And with breeders you know exactly what you are getting, and what possible decects and illnesses the breed is prone to. Meanwhile, most shelters have to ballpark their guesses on breed, which could prove traumatizing if your adopted dog has a condition you didn't accurately predict. I'm not totally against adoption, it's just that to say that adoption is the only way to go is wrong- btw can we shoot the salesman now?
@DeathSlayerV You know, a lot of health problems a bred into show dogs, to suit the requirements, until eventually they are nothing like the original breed. People win, but the dog has to suffer.
@SubZerofrost1 The stores will eventually go out of the puppy selling buissness I suppose, So then a constant gstream of dogs isnt flowing while perfectly good ones sit in shelters waiting to be killed.
when i get my own place im gonna go to a pet shelter and pick out all the dogs no one would want so they wouldent die and the ones that do have a chance get adopted get adopted!
Walk into a shelter and count how many purebred dogs are there. Mostly mutts huh? Point your finger at the people who won't get their pets fixed. Unless its a quasi-breed like a Whoodle or what ever, why would a breeder intentionally breed mutts?
last i checked 40% + of that 4 million are unadoptable because of either medical or personality problems that cannot be corrected for one reasion or another. And when i go and buy an animal from a breeder, i only buy from a registered breeder.
the ultimate problem is not that it came from a breeder, but that ultimately their are too many dogs in society. so the true answer is the neuter or spade your animal, regardless of how cruel you might think that is, its more cruel to let them overpopulate.
Thats real nice PETA, make a little girl cry, and tamper with the remains of an animal your "fighting for", real nice. Even if it isn't real, think of how many kids u made cry, because you had a bag with a dead dog in it. Yea, real nice. BTW! Just because you buy from a breeder, doesn't mean you kill one, you saved a dog from getting traumatized by going to a shelter at all. REAL NICE!

i iwsh they would show this ad all over the US. its so true. it kills me to see when people dont get animals from a shelter. We had a Scottish terrier from a breeder and he was always sick,so IMO breeder dogs aren't that healthy either he had A LOT of health problems my rescue mutt is healthier
saldy most breeders of any animal suck ass. if you buy from a good breeder you should be getting a healthy animal, if it is sick so much then it is the fault of the owner.
how much i hate peta i do like this ad. though all dogs need homes, not just shelter dogs
I never thought about it until now, what do they do with the dogs that are in the pet stores that aren't getting new homes? Do they kill them if they can't sell? Hmm? Creepy and sooo sad.
those dogs come from puppy mills so hopefully they dont get purchased. they do go to pounds and rescue places most of the time if they arent purchaced and then you can adopt them without supporting any mills
Great ad! I wish we can actually do this perhaps everyone will finally WAKE UP. The point is: Don't Breed or Buy while shelter animals die... spay and neuter your pets!
No i really don't think that i killed another dog by buying a dog from a breeder.
The previous owner that took the dog to the shelter or abandoned the dog or whatever, is the one that led to the demise of the dog.
Blaming us is just wrong, sure you can look at it that way if you like but its really the person that let the animal get to that stage in the first place...
@bennett361 dumb.. no the pupps parents are in bad shape.. wen you buy a pupp the dogs have to make a new one, and if you pick an pup and more come they kill those who nobody wants, its beter to adopt whit love then buy whit hate, so your killing a dog wen you buy one cuz the unwanted is killed
pls dont take that the wrong way, agree ppl should rescue dogs from shelters, but the 1s my fam has adopted have died and left behind lots of vet bills (and some dogs myfriend got from a breeder did to so im not syaing theirs are healthy) but all the dogs I have have come from someones home, usually they where a yr old, about to be sent to a shelter, or where mistreated, so i consider them rescued dogs... we just dont have room for the <3 ache anymore or debt, but we encorage shelter adoptions.
