@TheExoticAnimal the stallion is a world champion that lives in ohio, and the mare lives in california. it's safer on both actually so they do not injure one another, and timing of the egg dropping is exact, so you only have to inseminate once to get an embryo.

No, conception does not always take place. It really comes down to timing. This was the second time I inseminated her; the first she had ovulated the night before the semen came in, so the egg had already dropped, and the semen was too late.

ooh will u show the delivery of the baby horse when she gives birth? and perhaps post details about horse behaviour and gestation period. I was also wondering, do mares eat their own placenta after giving birth?

Yes! I sure do hope to be there for the delivery, and if I am I will have it on video!

My mare's personal gestation period (from previous foals) is about 322 days instead of 340. So the foal is Due around April 23rd. Mares in the wild would eat the placenta so predators dont smell the blood and tissue and come for a meal. But since my mare will foal out in a barn, I will take the placenta to look it over for health concerns. It tells a lot about the foal and how it developed.

It's sad how animals in the wild have to succumb to such radical means to protect their young. I couldn't imagine that they'd enjoy it, I did hear it is good for postpartum depression so perhaps nature intends it to be important for them?

once. I gave her Prostaglandin to make her come into heat, ultrasounded her until she was at a 32mm follicle, then order semen for next day delivery. Since this time was the second breeding and she was at a 35mm, i did same day delivery on a commercial flight, and picked it up at the airport.

Then I inseminated her, and gave her HCG to make her ovulate. Then AI again 12 hours after the first breeding, and hopefully make an embryo!
