  • I'm not a native speaker of English, but I've spent some time both in the US and in the UK; and I think the accent definitely has a lot in common with the irish accident.

After reading on wikipedia i find out that this isn't a coincidence. It says people from Appalachia (I assume Pittsburgh lies in this region) descends from ireland.

    Am I completely wrong here?

  • She's forcing the normal accent... in the later part, she's definitely speaking Pittsburghese... I completely understand her issue. I went to school in VA, and they used to rake me through the coals about what I was saying. I got relief when I made a friend from Penn Hills... then they made fun of both of us because are accents were thicker when we got arahhhnd each other... tawkin' baht da Stillers, an at.

  • I didn't see an accent at all. I pronounce the words just like you do! But.. I am from Pittsburgh lol, so I can see why I can't find a difference.

  • WHAT?! Who says The-sor-ous?

  • You rock. I understood everything perfectly BEFORE the translation. I guess it helped that I grew in In Pittsburgh. You did forget bumbershoot and babushka. And since you mentioned chipped ham and jumbo, what about halupki and haluski? YUM YUM

  • Simple, the Pittsburgh Accent sounds entirely retarded.

Getting out of Pittsburgh is the best way to fix it! So escape quickly.

  • somethin about you pisses me off

  • f em girl, beates being from WVU, aka orphan annie of the allaganies

  • Like most people in the Maryland area, I have a low opinion of Pittsburgh. But hearing this accent has softened that opinion.

  • You forgot the dishwoosher *dishwasher* lol.

  • Finally someone that understands! Everyone laughs when I say "pop" or pronounce iron, or water wrong!

  • Pittsburgh accents are the best accents ever. I was also raised in the burgh and I literally cannot tell you how many times people ask me what I'm saying because I'm "saying it wrong".

  • I totally talk like this. Now I'm not as eager to vacation in the west.

  • are you telling me ive been saying thesaurus wrong?

    she's faking this accent totally.

  • I love the pittsburghese word YINZ .

  • what you don't have an accent. either that or it's just the fact that i'm from pittsburgh and everyone talks like this and its normal to me

  • Oh yes, you have a point. I live in Pittsburgh and I have the accent. Lol, I went to NYC and said to one of the street venders "What kinda pop do you got?" and he thought I was talking about bombs. Lol, check out "I'm From Pittsburgh original song" on my channel. I think you'll like it.

  • yea i get that too XD ur not alone :D

  • Im from Pittsburgh to and I moved to Virginia and people talk about my accent all the time

  • Lmao@ clicker.

  • Lol! Anyone wanting to raid a family picnic in Pittsburgh for free eats needs only to know the lingo and your welcomed as one of the family! Thing is you have to be a true Pittsburgher, for a phony can be smelled out even by the family dog! Then your ass gets bounced back to Baltimore, Cleveland, or Cincy, not forgetting Philly of course! Hey would one of yinz pass the jumbo sandwich!!

  • @1024eddie Wait. . .you actually have people come to your family picnic's and try to score free food? I'm from Pittsburgh and this has never happened at any of our picnic's. Or any I recall anyway.

  • You're the only one on YouTube WITHOUT an accent!

  • If people think you have an accent yinz aint seen nuthin yet

  • I don't here it, but course I'm from SW PA

  • Btw i agree with meredith. I was waiting tge whole time to hear ur accent. Lol i think its quite vague compared to other pittsburghers.

  • Lolololol nice. Well done! I've either heard or said all of these!

  • Doesn't sound like you have an accent to me...

of course I'm from Pgh ;-)

  • I was born and raised in Pittsburgh and have also lived all over the world. Now I'm stuck in Minnesota....you should hear how they talk!!! (Watch the movie 'Fargo' and you'll see what I mean! I'll take my 'burgh accent anytime!!!!!

  • For what it's worth i like a Pittsburgh accent :)

  • You don't sound different to me. I guess that's because my grandma was born and some what raised Pittsburgh but moved to Rochester NY. Where me and my mom along with some family was born and raised. My accent is mixed with NC/Pittsburgh/NorthEast NY. But yeah I have the same problem sometimes I say words "wrong."

  • you're so cute

  • We don't talk funny. Everyone else does.

  • You rule, kiddo! I'm 15108 born and bred...nobody had ANY friggin' clue what I was talking about when I moved to SoCal aeons ago at age 9...it was hilarious and frustrating at the same time!!

  • i believe the preferred term is "Yinzer"

  • I Live In New Castle 1 hour away from burgh.

  • I got fam in the Burgh. I love it. Your funny and clever. Good stuff.

  • Oh, Abby. You are so freaking cute. I love this so much. I remember when your accent was so wild and crazy to me, but now I even talk like you sometimes. I say 'shore' instead of 'sure' and 'kohl' instead of 'cool.' I'll never understand the entire chipped ham stuff, but it's crazy that I was in Pittsburgh with you. It's crazy that you've even changed how I speak. It's crazy that that's the tiniest way you've changed my life. You're just adorable and I love you so, so much.

  • Shortly after we moved to Massachusetts when I was still a lad, I went into the supermarket with my mother and she tried ordering a pahnd o' jumbo from the deli counter. The blank stare on the employee's face prompted my brother and I to glance quickly at each other and make our retreat, abandoning our mother at the counter.

  • I <3 being a Pittsburgher.

  • Da hell with them jagoffs that don't like our speak.

*insert black and yellow song here*

  • Lol. Well done. :) For the record, you don't really sound like you have an accent until you start talking fast - then it's very hard to understand what you're saying, even with the captions!! Lol. But in most of your explanation talks, no accent whatsoever. Not sure if that was because you were talking slower then or what.

  • Haahah this mad me laugh well done!

  • I love this video. I live in California but i have a huge family in Pittsburgh and ive spent half my life there. My firends often say i talk funny.

  • I'm from Pittsburgh and I say jackoff lol (:

  • you don't have the accent at all... wexford don't count as picksburgh.

  • baha i d the same thing! was raised in Pittsburgh from birth to 8 years old im now 13 and still talk like i live there :3

  • This is my life! Raised in Pittsburgh! I dont even realize that I sound like this, but I do.

  • You forgot Jirls.... my best friends from my school (kutztown) all from Pittsburgh. after hanging out with them all the time im starting to pick it up and saying pop clicker jirls. and im from philly. i remember people thought you guys were from a different countries

  • @XDeathbySRIHCX what the hell is a jirl, never in my life heard someone say anything like that

  • @devneydoubleya a jirl is a girl

  • pitttsburghh allll dayy 412

  • Ok, nice vid but compared to my family, you have no accent at all, young lady. Well done, though! My people are from Sahside n'at. I was born a coupla blocks from the old Jaynell Stillmill backenn, so I know from whence I speak. ;-P GO STILLERS

  • GOOD JOB and I know it was hyperbole

  • Jaggoff lol, was waiting for that one.

  • I'm from Harrisburg, PA my dad my teacher and this dude who seats next to me are from Pittsburg do I tend to understand pittsburgees but the dude least favorite place and all his least favorite sport teams are Pittsburg related and I believe I am part Pittsburgian because my dads side of the family are from Pittsburgh and I sometimes am like a Pittsburgian

  • I've read that pittsburghese book too. I hate people who think they don't have an accent - very ignorant of the world (I am from England and live in Pittsburgh so I realize that this ignorance comes natural to You-ins). You have an accent. You use a Pittsburgh dialect.

    Wikipedia -

an accent is a manner of pronunciation peculiar to a particular individual, location, or nation.

  • you don't have an accent and you surely dont use any of these in real life. faker.

  • God I know someone from Pittsburgh. She sounds like you...

  • I have a stronger accent than you and you said that you emphasized them...

  • you have to have been born in pittsburgh to understand the dynamics of the dialogue and the culture.if not, it is all just generic. GO STILLERS,THATS PITTSBURGH. MISS CHILLER THEATHER AND CHIILY BILLY.

  • I don't think you have an accent at all and I'm from the south...soooo....

  • I wouldn't know she was from Pittsburgh. She doesn't have a Pittsburgh accent.

  • will you date me?

  • If you want to hear a very strong Pittsburgh dialect, then listen to the governor of Ohio John Kasich.

  • I agree....I don't think her accent is too thick. I'm from the area (have lived in NJ for 16 years)......I love when I go home and hear my family and the news people talk!! It is definitely a unique language.

  • I love pittsburgh!

  • Actually, her Pittsburgh accent is not very strong. -- much more extreme examples can be found especially in the little steel towns up the Mon, like McKeesport. I moved to Pittsburgh 40 years ago, but still can't quite do the accent right. It's vowel sounds that are tricky. I can do "Stillers," but still cannot manage the vowels in "dahtahn" (downtown) so that they sound natural.

  • im from near pittsburgh and we all use this "accent"

  • I'm goin dahn the iggle to get some gub n'at, d'ou go aready

  • I feel ya- I moved to Texas at 21 years old and I think "pop" was the one that I got nearly laughed out of college over. (It's all "coke" down here, "you want a coke?" "sure, 7up sounds good" "yeah I'll get a coke too, I think I'll have a Dr. Pepper") Anyway, now I have this weird mix of Yinzer/Texan accent, but when I watch the Steelers, it's all 'Burgh, baby :)

  • i know howw yu feel'!

i moved to florida, nd from pittsburgh.

theu have no clue what i say, like yinz are crazy.!

apparently i slur my words, is tht normal for pittsburghians?

  • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL...me and my girl Brooke love this! We didn't think you had an accent....nor did we think that our pronunciation of Winner AKA Winter was any different! hahahaha, thank you for enlightening us!

  • I'm wattchin the fuckin Stiller game ya jaggoff!!!!

  • Thats right yinz all!!!! Your all a bunch of jaggoffs!!!!!!

  • Pittsburgh....just another shitty ass town full of white racists in western PA....

  • @freddypickle Freddypickle...just another self-righteous troll on youtube.

  • @gracelessdilemma Takes one to know one. Keep up the racism, its just what this city needs!

  • @freddypickle And just how is stating your a troll being racist?

  • @Kacijo519 It isn't, no one said it is.

Yinzbags like yourself are notoriously racist. Maybe not you, but many are. I said nothing about being a troll, don't put words in my mouth.

  • Yer my HERO!!! i'm from pittsburgh too and everybody makes funa my accent!!!! thank ya so much

  • @CODhopeful "mind-boggling" is hyphenated

  • @CODhopeful Then don't watch it. WHOA! Look how easily that could have been solved for you! And then you wouldn't have to post pointless comments about your displeasure!

  • Superbowl Champs!!!

    I love pittsburgh!

  • Amen! When I met people at college down in Georgia, they thought I was from Texas b/c of the way I talked.! XD I go, "....No I'm from Pittsburgh." I still get it to this day!

  • U made me laugh. I knew everyone I loved it. We are who we are GO STEELERS

  • My folks are from Wheeling, and I was born in Pittsburgh and only lived there for a few years. But what is so funny is Wheeling people talk very similar to Pittsburgh, and I have always said, Chipped Ham, Red Up, Soda, etc. Soooo funny....and thanx!

  • I'm from Pittsburgh two! :D

  • Im from pittsburgh, alot of us dont have as obvious of an accent, including myself. I don't use any pittsburgh words but when I travel people still know with in the first hour of meeting me! I don't understand.

  • naut bad yung lady - jus mooved back to da burgh from yurp, and ur accent made me laff

    c ya

    bk

  • This is sooo funny. I lived in Pittsburgh from birth until I was 21 and moved to Michigan. I still catch myself saying gumbans and MAC machine. I made the mistake of saying those in the past, and you can't imagine the looks of sheer confusion I saw. Now that I have lived in Michigan for 12 years, when I come back home (yes, home is still Pittsburgh) I have to hear all my friends say how funny I talk.

  • I left the Pittsburgh are in 1986. I still amaze my wife by my uncanny ability to know a Pittsburgher after hearing him or her speaking for less than a minute. I also amaze the Pittsburghers when I ask them if they are from Pittsburgh and I tell them that I picked up on their accent.

  • LOL when you said Thesaurus I thought, huh, whats wrong with the way you said it LOL. I live in Portland Oregon for work I was born and raised in tha Burgh and however have lost much of my accent over the past 11 years I can still understand every word of pittsburghese. People here have no idea what I mean even when I talk about Kennywood park or "double Yoi" or even "Scratch my back with a hacksaw" or was it chainsaw?

  • LOL when you said Thesaurus I thought, huh, whats wrong with the way you said it LOL. People here have no idea what I mean even when I talk about Kennywood park or "double Yoi" or even "Scratch my back with a hacksaw" and my wife thought a "Terrible towel" was an insult. She now is a Steeler fan :-)

  • You're annoying.

  • Hey I'm from Pittsburgh to and I talk just like youu but I get my sis annoyed cause she don't like when I talk like a pittsburgher :/ but i do it anyways :)

  • I understood all of this. And I'm from Brooklyn.

  • this is fantastic. great video and sweet editing. gotta love that pixburghese n'at!

  • warshed

  • Haha, nice job.

  • some of those are what I say im from pitsburgh

  • would you like to be my bestfriend? lmao I say all of these all the time and like you I have alot of friends from over the Internet that have no clue what I'm saying lol

  • I didn't think I said as much as I did til I befriended a girl from Pottsville, PA. She always said "ain't?" in place of "didn't you?" or "right?"

  • @CAPA412 No doubt, the only thing i can think of that i say is the way i say pittsburgh, i guess it sounds more like picksburgh, but other than that i dont think i talk any different

  • Naaa....your not the one with the accent, its everyone else that talks funny. I always get the one " How do you spell the city you live in" cuz I guess the way I say it, along with everyone else, it would be spelled Picksburgh. If you not from the greatest city in the US......you just don't get it!

  • I was born and raised in the heart of Pittsburgh. I don't think i speak a drop of Pittsburghese...until I leave the city and socialize elsewhere.

    Gotta rep our city!

  • @CAPA412 You'd be surprised. I'm living in Delaware now, and I get the occasional "huh?" when I go, "My clothes need washed."

    That's subtle, but Pittsburghese none-the-less.

Think about all the consonants you don't pronounce. "unnerstan" (Understand) hav'n (haven't)

  • yes yes

  • lol about the only pittsburghese i speak is yinz, stillers, i-ern, fridee, and ocasionally djeetyit dont think i've ever said redd up or any others or miss pronounce too many words, "perk" of moving all around the country in my mid teens maybe? =p

  • So, so very true.. Well said.

  • Be proud of that accent.

I was born & raised in Pittsburgh. I move to LA in 1988 for about 10 years.

The first time I said "What are yinz doing." The people looked at me like I was from Mars,(not the township outside of Pittsburgh, but the planet.).

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to run to Giant Iggle before the Stiller game.

    ROCK ON.

  • As a western PA native but southern transplant, I know ALL those terms of which you speak but I don't think you have the stereotypical Pittsburgh accent. You don't sound like you've stepped right out of the DVE studio. And it's called Pittsburghese because everyone knows that the Burgh, while not the capital of PA, is indeed the capital of western PA, and nobody cares about what goes on east of the Susquehanna (you know, where the Iggles play.) Pgh has a completely separate culture...homesick.

  • @PghSteelNation Right on...I will agree with that, nobody over here in the good part of the state, gives a crap about Philthy over there!!

  • lol i talk like that too

  • I'm from Pittsburgh. I don't say half of those things. I suppose it's because I enjoy being as correct in language as possible. I now switch between the words "soda" and "pop" since attending Cal U of Pa. No idea why. I have never used "yinz," but I constantly use "ya'll." I never referred to "bologna" as jumbo" or "sprinkles" as "jimmies." I say "woosh" instead of "wash" and "supper" instead of "dinner."

  • LOL! She said "Pitsburgers" That's the only thing that cracked me up. No you don't have a bad accent. Kind of cute! Everyone from the mountains of NC to PA says You'ins. LOL!

  • My parents were born and raised in Shamokin PA. You sound perfectly normal to be.

  • Wash..Warsh

  • lol, my friend was confused out of his gord the first time I asked him to help "red up"

  • Nebby is such a great word. I don't know why the rest of the English-speaking world doesn't adopt it!

  • You forgot YINZ!

  • Comment removed

  • I'm from the South Hills, but I live in Washington DC. It's nice to hear the sounds of Home again.

    Go Stillers!

  • Look up the song "Growing up in Pittsburgh" by The Yinzers. It is brilliant.

  • What is up with jumbo? I think there was a popular brand of bologna called Jumbo. I don't know if that brand is still around. It must have been popular in Western Pennsylvania.

  • I moved to Pittsburgh about 3 years ago, and I still can't get over "yinz" and when people say things like "the car needs cleaned" instead of "the car needs to be cleaned" or "the car needs cleaning". But maybe that is because I am an English major...

  • Haha! Very insightful ;)

  • i say pop...

  • Omg this is hilarious xDD

  • oh abby....you are your words.

But seriously, when we were making the list of words, I had NO IDEA what the fuck you were saying have the time.

  • It's not just an accent, it's a language barrier.

  • I say 'pop' too!

    HIGH FIVE!

  • My mom is from da burgh so I showed her this. She ended up guessing every word before you said it!

  • OH MY GOD I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY "CRICK"

I'M SORRY ABBY BUT I HAVE TO KILL YOU

  • @SuperEggplantMan seconded.. sorry...

  • awe! Im from DA BURGH too!! (: it's so cool to see this vid, I say all my words and phrases like you and I had know idea I was saying them "wrong" either. What the heck? lol Like those words you gave examples of, I don't know what's wrong with them. haha thats funny (:

    fellow pittsburgher-

    madison (:
