  • my favorite game on the sega

  • Still remember this game.

  • I'm 25 and I can't believe not only am I watching this, but I remember the DULLARD code for genesis....Down up left left A right down....How sad haha

  • Wrong music for the stage. This music is for the Pit >.<

  • the graphics still look the same.

  • Scorpion used that picture in his driver's license.

  • Loading... Prepare to Fight

    Loading... Prepare to Fight

    Loading...

  • It was like they made Sega CD versions of games with no upgrades to take advantage of the hardware, and only to make a quick buck off of it being an extra platform. That was a sad situation.

  • @AllPro777

Well except of cause for the fact it doubled the ultimate CD soundtrack of the game, worth the purchase price almost alone and certainly worth the download of the rom today. This was where "Techno Syndrome" debuted!

This and Sonic CD really showed off that dual function(Game + Cd Soundtrack on the same disk) feature of the Sega/Mega CD.

I just downloaded it to my 3DS for some classic MK tunes.

  • The load time is only 8 seconds but it seems longer. :) The blood code ABACABB isn't even needed for this version, the blood is automatic, which is a real plus.

  • still one of the most classic

  • Music is all wrong :(

  • @natedoggcata actually the tracks themselves are perfect, but they are were put in the wrong stages!!! what a waste.

  • @s14tat Yeah thats what I meant. Im sure the people porting the game didnt think it was that big a dead but that music is MADE for those stages

  • @natedoggcata

Once they had made the soundtrack compatible with CD players, obviously they rushed the re-coding of the CD quality tracks back into the game... Nevertheless you got an overall classy full authentic CD soundtrack package with a crap version of the game tacked on. That's why the rom or CD is a must have port, but includes the worst version of the actual game!

  • @s14tat

This is because of one of the best points about this particular port... Sega had a habit of making game CDs double as music CD soundtracks, so you could play it in cd players. Obviously they forgot to reprogram the game's music correctly. Nevertheless, you got the official soundtrack, plus "Techno Syndrome"(2 years before the movie) and the Mortal Monday track and video. One of the best soundtrack CDs of all time!

  • This was a good port (besides the fact that the music tracks play in the incorrect order). My fav MK1 versions (won´t mention the superb arcade here - only ports):

    1. MS-DOS (CD-Version - arcade perfect gameplay and graphics, arcade music, poor sound fx compared to the arcade).

    2. Sega CD (Nice music, slightly enhanced graphics compared to the genesis cartridge, only the loading times bug me a bit especially when fighting shang tsung).

    3. Genesis (Good gameplay, nice music, gfx lack details)

  • How come only the first one has a scoring system?

  • @heardofrvb

because points are dead.... long dead. they switch over to matches won. i think MK2 had dragon signs, one for each bought and i think an extra for fatalities.

  • @epicblogofdoom You're right about that, it's too bad the blood was taken out for the SNES, otherwise it would of been the best console version of MK1.

  • the graphics on the snes are still better, but i think the gamplay on sega cd is better.

  • im 28 and i remember that the snes version was da best... werent you guys too young to play this lol

  • Uh.....why is the pit music playing in the court yard? WHY IS THE PIT MUSIC PLAYING IN THE COURT YARD?!

  • @TheNeverSayNever83 The game still has to be made to run on the Genesis hardware. I think the Sega Cd bumped the color palette up a little and of course better sound but that's about it.

  • dam i think this was better then the original sega version, subzero's stance is corrected and also has more audio.

  • I wish they made a new Mortal Kombat with digital images and not 3D.

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom We all do.

  • the best home port its my recomendation

  • are you sure this is cd? looks and sounds alot like arcade

  • @DaStayPuftFluff because they recoded the arcade audio on cd.

  • @DaStayPuftFluff I don't remember anarcade game displaying a screen saying "loading please wait"

  • @stoltobot i skipped through the video so i didn't notice that when i made my comment.

  • This version isn't too bad.

  • Why is it that most Mortal Kombat ports on Sega consoles have the music is in the wrong place, either that or different music all together is used. W T F was wrong with them that they just couldnt put the correct music to the correct stage.

  • VERY close to the arcade back then. And a kickass loading screen. Prepare to fight "Ok time to put the chips away"

  • This is Mortal Kombat for Sega CD?

  • @ElricSowrd yes

  • notice how the ripped head looks in the side direction rather than facing the "cam". I think it's funny.

  • awsome remake of old retro

  • haha didn't remember how violent mortal kombat was haha

still love this game thoughh wish i had a sega again... well i think i do but packed away somewhere... EBAY ! :D

  • Comparing it to the arcade version, I'd say it's a pretty close match, minus a few loading times thrown in. It is much better than that Baby's Toy on the Super Nintendo. The Sega Genesis version kicks major rear with a remixed soundtrack, and that kick rear blood code.

    Recap: Amiga<SNES<SCD<Arcade<Genesis

  • @IvoryGecko1993 yo u forgot the pc version those were the perfect arcade ones

  • I MEANT THE HOME CONSOLE RELEASES.

  • @ineedmoney231 PC was nowhere NEAR arcade perfect. Nothing is.

  • Arcade version > PC/Amiga version > Sega CD version > Sega Genesis version >>>>>>>>>>> SNES version.

  • looks faster more faster than snes version

  • sega cd....death!

  • this game would be even better if they would update the graphics on it

  • Can someone tell me what im doing wrong. This is the only game for sega cd rom i can not get to play. When i get to the intro screen and hit start the load cd pops up and freezes. HELP

  • This has always been my faorite home console port of mortal kombat!

  • alwayz thought the snes version was better even tho it had no blood and wack finishing moves hehe

  • sub zero is the best. :) x

  • I loved the cheat codes for this version. :)

  • Why is The Bridge theme played in The Courtyard?

  • Okay, I found out it was also used in The Bridge itself (The Bridge theme), but the Courtyard theme was used for both the Shrine and Lair levels. Weird...the fact they could use more storage space, but still screw up the matching tunes. I mention this because they did want to make it truer to the arcade.

  • not sure if want

  • 'OUTSTANDING'

  • I honestly don't think there was a "GREAT" arcade port of MK I, I would say the SNES is the best, but the lack of blood and gore really made it disappointing. I would say the Sega CD version is WAY better then the Genesis version because of what SNKjack said. Same with MK II, in the SNES version the names are said, in the Genesis version they aren't.

  • omg i could never get past endurance 1 o~o

  • im 26 and i still remember ABACABB blood on genesis. weird.

  • @xxironballzxx i'm the same age as you. remember the contra nes code for 40 lives? up, down, left, right, b,a,b,a,select, start

  • its actually 30 lives

  • so do i

  • @xxironballzxx haha you know. what about the code at the main screen "dullard"

  • @Ciscokid42069

DULLARD down up left left A right down......lol i guess somethings you never forget

  • @xxironballzxx Lol, same here, I'm 25, and I still remember the down, up, left, left, A, right, down to unlock the other cheats.

  • @xxironballzxx lol me too! I'm 30 :D

  • @xxironballzxx it's not weird....everyone remembers that.....how could u forget?

  • @xxironballzxx

    I'm 29 (1 month to 30) and also remember.

    You're not alone, pal!

  • @xxironballzxx I'm 30 still playing this shit

  • here is thing, people say this game had the same graphics as the genesis version. but come on, the animations where much better than the genesis version, and Sub-zero had his stance and not just a color swap of scorpion as the Genny version had.

  • i grew up with the sega cd version, the music alone is great

  • no the original one on the genesis is better

  • I love the way the sound is during the darker screen, when doing a fatality!

  • they still dont let you see the front of the victims face when the head is ripped off the body . In the arcade the showed us the face not the side of the head.

  • Actually people like genesis better beacause the gameplay is better.

  • no, people liked the genesis version more because there was blood

  • No, genesis really had better gameplay

  • there's no doubt that it does. But I remember back in the day when I had a SNES and my friends had segas the main thing they would go on about was the fact that it had blood and the SNES version didn't

  • @monopno76584 Yeah, it wasn't just the lack of blood. The SNES version played like garbage and didn't have the same combos as the arcade version. It looked better- I can give it that but not much more.

  • @Mysterious0Bob BS dude. The Sega versions were garbage, graphics, sound, controls, you name it. The SNES version was as close to arcade perfect as it got, with the exception of silly clear blood. But who cared when it played and looked and sounded better? I certainly didn't.

  • @poopmaster13 You are off your rocker if you think the SNES port of MK1 had better controls than the Genesis port. MK2 was clearly better on the SNES, but the Genesis port of MK1 is vastly more playable. I guarantee you people will back me on this.

  • @poopmaster13 The SNES version of MK1 looked better, but the Sega CD version played and sounded better.

  • @monopno76584 Yes, but it hasn't got audio dubbing (scorpion wins, flawless victory, fatality)! I think that the music and sound in both versions normal!

  • I still think the SNES and Arcade has the best versions of Mortal Kombat, I mean I didn't really care about the gore being taken out of the SNES version, and I still don't care. I'm pretty sure the only reason people like the Genesis version best is because of the gore, they didn't care about the horrible graphics, the God aweful sound, and the half assed animations

  • If nothing else, the SNES version doesn't support two fireballs at once.

If Scorpion throws his spear, then Sub Zero throws his ice ball, Scorpion will win.

Sub Zero's freeze will mysteriously evaporate, and that's just not fair.

Genesis version actually and truly PLAYED better.

(not to mention had the better music, and gore)

MK2 was the best on 32X, but sucked on Genesis...and almost no one had 32X, so you know how that one went...

  • it dosent work with emulators

  • Don't you guys agree that the graphics in the SNES version looks more realistic + better colours than the sega cd version ?

  • Oh yea, SNES version definitely has the best graphics, despite running in a lower resolution.

It's graphics are way better, and the censored fatalities are very interesting.

Especially Johnny Cage, Raiden, and Sub Zero's.

It may have played worse, and sounded worse, but SNES had almost all the voice clips (missing some, like Get Over Here) and easily looked the best.

Game Genie turned the sweat red...but it wasn't the same.

  • I was always envious of how good Sculptured Software managed to port on the SNES. Probe was just a terrible developer on Sega systems. They botched MK1 graphics and sounds. Did the same with 2 then botched the 32X and Saturn versions. Why was the music so bad? Why was the Genesis version missing so many sounds yet it used the same space as the SNES counterpart lol.

  • the genesis only had one digitized sample channel to play back voice, the snes could playback 8 at once.

  • SF2 and SSF2 had all the voices even if they were muffled. Plus MK3 sounded much better. This was jsut sloppy programming on Probe's case.

  • Genesis version had the better music.

The music you hear in this video is actually the arcade/SNES music.

Not too good is it? Nope.

Genesis got it's own original sound track, and it sounded way better.

Sega CD version took away the "excellent" voice clip too...just not the good version to own.

  • This was the Sega CD version

  • Holy S*** on a sandwich with ***** on top!I cant belive it!

  • what??

  • I cant belive it that this game is so bad.

  • the bad got worse in this port version of MK looks just like the Genesis but with more animation and Arcade sounds But look at SUB ZERO's fatality they still show the side of the head instead of showing the front with the face expression of DEATH.

  • This version included waaaaay more animation, and sounds. It played the same, which was the best home port of MK at the time (SNES had eye candy, but no substance).

It still featured SOME of the crap sound effects of the Genny version, but not many. Load times were a pain, especially against Shang Tsung. Its almost unplayable.

And in regards to storage limitations - the Sega CD used CD'S (600+ megs). It had WAY more storage than the 8 or 16 meg cartridges that most large Genesis games were.

  • my favorite mk game out of the whole series....for some reason i liked playing it on sega better than all the newer versions today

  • god i miss playing this on sega

  • The life bar is different at Genesis version

  • oh how i miss playing this game on sega.

  • Same as genesis just the right sound track.

  • Basically, these are the same shitty graphics as Genesis. Except, for the correct fighting stance of Sub-Zero. Since it's a CD, the sound is like the arcade. Not worth buying if you already had the Genesis version. Oh, don't forget the load times! I'd rather play the Genesis version!

  • Actually, the graphics look like a step up from the Genesis version, which is surprising because I assumed the Sega CD had the same limitations except when it comes to storage and memory. I too noticed that Sub-Zero has the correct fighting stance here which leads me to believe that the only reason the Genesis version doesn't is due to memory limitations or simply bad programming.

I was just playing this on my Genesis and this has an overall "smoother" look, in my opinion.

  • i rape people with scorpion i shove it deep in there ass when i play online hahahahahaha

  • it's as hideous as everyone said at the time

    one of the worst conversions

  • youre retarded :)

  • and you can't argue

  • and you dont know anything about mortal kombat so why argue? ;)

  • wow! Even if there's loading times, this version looks pretty sweet :-)

  • the Arcade version is still the best

  • ofcourse that arcade version allways is the best or was the best

  • @Yuzoboy duh

  • @Yuzoboy

    Naah.. really?

    Ya don't say?

  • I agree with you, and I'm not really a SNES fan.

    In ranking MK1 ports.

    SNES is the best

    Sega CD

    Genesis

Sega got the bad end of the stick with Acclaim porting it's MK games with Probe. While SNES got Sculpture software.

Genesis didn't finally get a good MK port until MK3.

  • how is the snes better than this?

  • it has the arcade background, music, and ending.

Play it and compare, and you'll see it's the best .

Sculpture Software made the SNES port while Acclaim gave MK ports for the Sega's systems to crappy Probe.

  • Right!

  • Um... CD-DOS was way better. Like the SNES, but with gore.

  • Grain: Well, the SNES cannot be the best. It didn'

t have the gore. Which was the draw of the game. Without the gore, you don't have a very good game. It doesn't play like a Street Fighter II or many of it's other variations. Then again, what game plays as well as SF II?

  • I totally agree with you. Where as the Gen's controls were fluid, smooth and very nice, I felt the SNES had pretty bad control lag, and made the game a chore. Pulling off special moves and finishers were very hard. Best version = CD-DOS. Gore, GFX, sound and control. I had that one! :D

  • i remeber the sega CD! it sucked alot and the load times were soooo LONG! and u needed a sega genesis in order for it to work...that was jus plain retarted but non the less MK still kicked ASS!!!!!=)

  • Mega CD was awesome. You just needed to know wich games were good, and wich were shovelware by lazy devs.

  • ha, the spine rips out

  • ive played evry mk game except for street fighter vs mk mk special forces n this 1 =(

  • Street Fighter Vs. MK? There's no such thing

  • he probly means mk vs dc or he's talking about M.U.G.E.N

  • Beats me

  • no.

  • The Courtyard music rules!

  • That's "The Pit" 's music

  • OWNED! lol

  • Huuurm... if this the real thing, or emulated?

    El Cernex

  • this port does look kinda smooth and faster is that coz its a rom? i never played iyt on sega cd

  • off with his head.

  • I was really disappointed with the Sega CD port. the Genesis cart is still the better buy

  • Youtube commenters are the only special breed of morons who can argue about something subjective and still be objectively WRONG!

    :)))))))))

  • SNES versions had the graphics and much nicer sound. Genesis/Sega CD versions had MUCH smoother gameplay and the fatalities left in. Put them together and they are perfect. I'm a SNES man but no one is going to tell me that in terms of gameplay the SNES was the better game. It's fun, but the Genesis version even with the fatalities turned off was better to play.

The Sega CD version I remember getting panned in Gamepro and I thought it was a good port.

  • Wrong- The SEGA CD version ports the music from the ARCADE game directly whereas the SNES version remakes the music with different hardware and it sounds the same but it is not entireley the same as the arcade.

Sega CD version also played exactly like the arcade port, but SNES had better graphics because the Sega CD technology was inferior to it- for whatever reasons.

Wikipedia Mortal Kombat then scroll down to the "Ports" section to read all about it.

  • It just seems pointless to me, if the game is considered bad by the player, why anyone would play it. I mean being a gamer you should agree that you wouldn't wanna play a bad game just because it had one thing you liked. That's like saying you would date a horrendous looking girl just because she has big breasts. I mean you might like big breasts but does that mean you should date them? Probably not unless you don't consider her ugly. But u said it was a bad game. so I don't get why you play it.

  • the sound is great, much better than the sega megadrive

  • a SNES game (better graphics)

    makes it more enjoyable playing

    than a Genesis/Mega-Drive game

  • apocalypse1280 use your brain

    before asking stupid questions

how was the SNES port better ?

    Genesis/Mega-Drive/Sega CD

    64 colours (screen) & 80 sprites

    SNES 256 colours & 128 sprites

  • You couldn't rip the dude's spine off in the SNES version tho therefore it was worthless.

  • Wether or not you could do which fatality in which version, the fact remains the SNES version is superior technologically to all of SEGA's ports of the game. But of course people who want blood are too foolish and ignorant to realize this and immediately give SEGA praise for its half assed version. Oh of course except for the blood cuz everyone knows that affects the general gameplay drastically.(Note sarcasm.) Give me a break.

  • The original Mortal Kombat was a terrible game in every way imaginable (it got better with 2 and 3) and the only reason anyone would ever play it over Street Fighter is the blood. Therefore the Genesis version is better.

  • Well I don't think it was TERRIBLE. I mean true it wasn't the most innovative fighter, in fact it was extremely simple in terms of gameplay, everyone had the same basic moves and played exactly the same in that aspect, aside from their special moves. But it still has its certain charm, and it was better than A LOT of fighters at the time of its release.. I would still play the SNES over Genesis because gameplay wise it is still better, the Genesis feels like a cheap knockoff, with blood.

  • @Akujitsu Anyone who thinks the SNES MK1 is superior to the Genesis MK1 must have no concept of how the game is supposed to be played. The mechanics in the SNES port are broken, nothing functions as it should. That is why it was a weak port. The fatalities on SNES were sometimes hilarious.

  • @mutoneon Superior graphically and soundwise, otherwise Genesis wins gameplay wise. However, after the release of MKII it tore the Genesis port "a new asshole" as Ed Boon said in an EGM video interview back in '93. According to Boon everything transitioned more smoothly with the MKII SNES port. Followed by the then superior SNES ports for MK3 and UMK3. If I recall some of the PSX and Genesis ports of the original MK3 had to be recalled do to glitches, this was something I read years ago.

  • noob was sub-zero once

  • i used to have this.

    sega gensis.

    fucking awesome.

    i miss it.

  • Sega CD port was the best port of the game. the gameplay was very close to the arcade. No way is the SNES version better. Graphics do not make a game.

  • The SNES put more detail into the scenery and sound. While the characters were larger and and the frame rate was faster that was because they were render by block pattern so they were a bit mor jagged and blury. The NES basicially had a better balance to get the best effect. While Probe Sacraficed one for another. The Sega CD could of had much better graphics but basically all they did was port the Gen version and give better sound. It should have been rebuilt for SegaCD hardware.

  • this is just the genesis version with better sounds and music, and smoother character animation...what is the point of releasing this. they should have at least beefed up the graphics to at least snes level..it would have been soo good man

  • Wow, I kind've expected a little better graphics and sound from the SEGA CD version. It looks like the SNES version was superior in graphics/sound...too bad that version lacked blood and gore. :(

  • Mortal Kombat SNES

    best 16-bit port

    audio & graphics

    no loading time

  • You forgot censored fatalities and "sweat" for blood.

  • And the SNES version was better then this how?

  • I guess you guys don't understand. Paying hundreds of dollars on a new system which is supposed to be better. buy a game to find out its exactly the Genesis with better music and animation. Now I'm a young kid at the time, and spent all my money for this. You can flame all you want, but I think I had the right to be disappointed with this. I never said the Snes version was better, but I felt ripped off.

  • This version also has more frames of animation compared to the genesis version and the announcer has more to say other than "finish him"

  • this was the same shit as genesis version, only much better sound

  • Well really I wouldn't agree with the better sound, because of the music for the Sega CD version was just plain boring, the Genesis music were more catchy and had great beats. Then the sound effects for the Genesis were more crazy and made it sound like you were kicking some serious ass in the game.

  • You don't need to enter the Blood Code on the Sega-CD version.

  • There wasn't even a Blood Code on the SNES version, which makes it inferior to the Genesis and Sega CD versions.
