I think u are missing the point. Englash has always been the official language. It is the medium used in schools. We are talking here of a common Chinese medium which is Mandarin. Singapore has promoted Mandarin for all Chinese but you suggested fujianese.

@BAIYUE1 I don't understand what you are saying. To start of with there is no such thing as a Fujianese language. Fujian has a lot of dialects. Xiamen (minnan) hua is one of them, Fuzhou hua is another. There are more Guangdong ren (when you combined Guangzhou and Chaozhou ren) in Singapore than Fujian ren. Thus, how can you say the Singapore government should support Fujian hua. Mind you, I am a Singaporean from Zhangzhou descent which means I speak Fujian (minnan) hua.

We penangite , when we speak hockien we always uses other language like cantonese, malay, english or mixed some mandrin words in our language. In Taiwan, 80% Taiwanese is Hokkien origin. But unfortunately, after KMT take power in Taiwan, they ban all Hokkien in public and replace Hokkien by Mandarin.

Fukkienese is one part of Singapore, and Fukkienese has right o maintain Fukkienese language, and has right to have supporting from Singaporean government. But Singaporean didn’t do that, only promote Mandarin.

@BAIYUE1 I don't understand what you are saying. To start of with there is no such thing as a Fujianese language. Fujian has a lot of dialects. Xiamen (minnan) hua is one of them, Fuzhou hua is another. There are more Guangdong ren (when you combined Guangzhou and Chaozhou ren) in Singapore than Fujian ren. Thus, how can you say the Singapore government should support Fujian hua. Mind you, I am a Singaporean from Zhangzhou descent which means I speak Fujian (minnan) hua.

@BAIYUE1 I believe the Singapore government did the right thing by going for Mandarin (putonghua) instead of a collection of different Chinese dialects.

I think Singapore did wrong thing. They should promote English to unite all ethnic in Singapore and maintain diversify in culture and language.
Promote mandarin will not help unite Singapore but will divide Singapore. You will see it in future. Malay, Indian,…in Singapore will not accept that.

@BAIYUE1 how about ethnic Chinse and tamil in malaysia? why they force language Malay is official language in Malaysia? how about ethnic chinese, tamil, arabic in Indonesia? they force using Indonesia as their official language? WHY WHY WHY? why in USA they force english not INDIAN native language as their official language? how about Australian not using Aboriginal language as their official language? another why why why, simple, Majority always WIN. @BAIYUE1 thats true. I think hockien in penang also loose our original ancestor language. We penangite , when we speak hockien we always uses other language like cantonese, malay, english or mixed some mandrin words in our language. When we go to the original china wher they speak hockien , i think they cant even understand a word for us.

In Taiwan, 80% Taiwanese is Hokkien origin. But unfortunately, after KMT take power in Taiwan, they ban all Hokkien in public and replace Hokkien by Mandarin.
With majority theory, Hokkien should be official language of Taiwan instead of Mandarin.

@BAIYUE1 thats true my friend. Both taiwan and singapore is ruled by mandrin educated leaders. We cant help it , chinese educated leaders always have those communist thinking. They dont think about the peoples choice of language, they only think about the country wealth. Unlike Hong Kong those days before The china took over hong kong from the british, i think their film industry is better. But when china took over most film stars migrate to the us or singapore.

@BAIYUE1 those days when i watch a hongkie film, is either english , or cantonese in spoken in the film.If it is a hongkie production they need to put a china people in their movie,in other words spoiled the movie. When a china production all mandrin , no cantonese actor. Is it fair. But seriously most hongkie superstar went to the usa , singapore or australia.
