If it is not a dog/cat/guinea pig/etc and can reasonably survive in the local environment, it is often released. Sure, parenting plays a part, but so does instinct. For example, stray dogs, which have been domestic for thousands of years, have been known to form packs and hunt just like their wolf ancestors.
