I don't like the design of Ryu either. Worst part is he's actually just a white dude. But through all the incredibly fun and distracting gameplay, I hardly think about it.

You don't like the design? Hehheh. I thought I'm the only one ;))))))) Great gameplay is what makes it possible for me to play GoW - despite all absurdities and blunders the story is full of. Games are a very, so to speak, visual entertainment and now that I've seen how it NG looks like I don't feel like trying to get addicted. I'd rather play Heavenly Sword. And Onimusha 3. Do you know it? Is it any good?
