The Canberra was used to overfly the Soviet Union. One of the pilots who did this died recently- Wing Commander "Mac" Furze who flew 1000 miles into Russian airspace..At an airshow in about 1955 a Soviet General said that any more Canberra aircraft flying over their territory could be shot down by a new missile. Everyone thought this was stupid Soviet paranoia but the flights had been going on for years mainly by the USA- which built Canberras- the Martin B57- a testament to the design. .
In fact Baggy had a rotten Avpin habit, he'd be shooting the stuff, when it got the old bird in level flight, works everywhere all over the cockpit,, I tried it once, shared his needle...well you could in those days....before the AIDs business, didn't like it made me feel all twitchy, still it's a testament to the Canberra, that it flew hand's off like a dream, which was just as well as Baggy was often off his head..."Baggy" I'd say "Concentrate for god's sake". But he didn't give a monkeys....
"Baggy" I'd cry, "...it's not ment to go that fast...", but he didn't give a monkeys, I'll never forget one day we were at 88,000 ft and he say...."I say Smudger, lets go to the moon before Neil Armstrong, it's only over there...." and I'd have to tell him,"Baggy we're at the limit of our operational height.." But he didn't give a monkeys so went to the moon in 1968 a year before before Neil Armstrong. Ha those were the great days of British Aviation,Baggy wonder what happened to Baggy?
God I remember flying in one of these with Jimmy "Baggy" Whitworth in the 60's ,he'd even smoke his pipe too, the old bugger would be forever tapping it on the side of his ejector seat and all the ash would land on my instruments, "cut that out Baggy" I'd cry, but he didn't give a monkeys. Ha what a character, and what a plane, I never forget when we got up to Mach 2 in a dive outside scampton, "
I used to work/fly on these babies. Still remember the day one of our engineers forgot to isolate the main board and started the engine with wooden plug and canvas cover still in place. I never saw a guy run so fast in my life! :p

You should have included some footage of the German Canberra aircraft and played Aces High and it would have been complete. Nice though.

"Yes we had a similar version still in use in 1960, for the middle east. We had a couple on our station."
