@mileycyrus14ishify ya hearing people dont really understand what hardhearing or deaf people are saying most of them try to speak clear and loud im hardhearing and i had speech therapy and people kinda understand me lol. but most people dont really understand deaf 'cause they mostly do sign languages alot then trying to speak. i dont do signlanguages much. i can read lips really good.

I was deaf till the age of 5 and apparently I could kind of lipread. I had hearing aids as well. I don't remember it and I can definitley not do it now, but I suppose it's somehting that you can sometimes pick up, especially if you start at a young age and know no other way of understanding. I think in my case though I could hear a small amount of noise and so was able to match up general tones and mouth movement.

My husband's Deaf, he doesn't lipread too well. I'm Deaf but I do lipread. We happen to work things out when communicating with hearing people. He has good voice to use when talking with hearing people and I interpret when they say something back to us. And no I don't use my voice. Get it? That's the beauty of our marriage =D LOL

Um... actually the Deaf can read lips, its just more difficult for them, because so many letters have the same mouth shape (i.e M,B,P {Mat, Bat, Pat}). And Marlee is what they call Profoundly deaf, she can't hear anything. They do have scripts on the show, so she just needs to lip read in order to find out when to come in. There could have also been an interpreter off screen for her. I don't know. I realize not everyone knows these things, but please ask rather than assume.

Well, not in a rude way at least :) Marlee is profoundly deaf, which means she cannot hear what the woman is saying at all (she can probably only hear really loud things...like airplanes, blow horns, etc.), but she, like many deaf people, can read lips very well. And, since she cannot hear voices, she cannot hear herself speak, which is why her voice sounds like that. So no, she can't hear but uses lip reading to supplement. Hope that cleared things up!

It was only once were i was given the surprise of my life a year ago, when i came up to a faculty member for some directions, and we were speaking normally...her voice sounded normal. Then when my friend and I went off, he told me that she was deaf...and i was astounded....i was wondering why she kept looking at my lips haha

Just as WilltheIV says, as a CODA, I've been put in situations to interpret for my parents on many occasions. @jowestbury you should watch the 1985 film, "Love is Never Silent"...Mare Winningham played the daughter (there is a little girl earlier in the film portraying her, and Mare played the adult daughter years later)...the parents were played by real-life deaf actors.....anyway, the daughter as a little girl had to interpret for her parents in the movie.
