I remember when all the downtown department stores and office buildings in Baltimore had manual elevators with operators. By the end of the 1960s only one store still had them. I would patronize that store whenever I could just to be able to ride the old elevators on my shopping trip. This building's owners were smart in keeping them.
Like I say about these elevators, THESE ARE REAL ELEVATORS!!! Easy to maintain, and not much to worry about. It's about time we write congress to pass a law that would force building owners to leave these type of elevators alone. Congrats to the building owner in this video for choosing to leave this elevator alone.
Jeanette really mentioned the truth about kids wanting to ride something like this. Because these have history behind them. In these elevators, you only have only one bulb to worry about, and that is just the car light. No floor indicator lights to worry about, no extra buttons to push and worry if they are going to worry about. And the floor numbers are painted on the door. Only exption for the lights is the onboard call lights that are connected to a buzzer when the button is pushed.
i absolutely love carolina camera! and all the ppl that watch and comment on it! everyone is sooo nice here! thnx fir giving me and others a good experience on youtube
THAT is how you modernize a historic elevator. You just clean it and THAT'S ALL!!!!! I am glad to see this type of elevator STILL running. Convert it to electric buttons, and you just ruined the elevator. Thanks for posting this. Videos like this shows I am proud of the elevator operator for choosing not to retire! GOOD GIRL!!!
Thanks for posting this video! I think those old elevators, especially ones with an operator, are so cool! I just wish we had more commercial office buildings with them! In Arizona where I live, some of the old hotels in the smaller towns still have the old type elevators with the folding grill doors inside, and a few with operators.
There are 3 elevators that work like this in my ciry where I live. I used to be an operator of one of them. There are no push buttons for the floors, just a lever with a handle, you push it in one direction and the elevator goes down, the other direction and you go up. Stopping is determined by the operator. The elevator has safety switches that stop the elevator even if you were to hold the handle to either side.
The guy on the right at 1:05 is my dad and he still works in that building!
