Really upset and shocked to hear the sad news Joost. My thoughts are with you and your family. One of the greatest scrum halves, and all round players ever.
God Bless you Joost, Australian Rugby is thinking of you. You were truly one of the greatest Half Backs, let alone players, of what is arguably the greatest generation of world rugby players in the games history.
Joost got news today that he might have between 2 -5 years to live because of a disease . Let this be a lesson to everybody to live your live worthy to a good cause . What ever your cause dont waste your time. Mine is to live for my Saviour Jesus Christ .
I remember all the hype about Lomu that year. All the commentators going on about players not wanting to face someone of his size. Van der Westhuizen put him down easily. He proved what we were always taught as juniors - you cant run without your legs.
Thanks for posting. I have to be honest, I only watched on T V but I do remember it very well. When I played as a kid I was always a lot smaller than anyone else, so I had to rely on technique a lot more. Van der Westhuizen wasn't the biggest player on the pitch by any means and when he put Lomu down with seeming ease it gave me something to cheer. I'm English and England didn't really turn up that year!
I wouldn't say its bad luck its just part of life unfortunately. Its very sad to hear that these big strong legends of men have such health problems though. At least they are fighters and I am sure they will stay strong and have all the support they need. They will never be forgotten too. Thanks for the comment, Cheers
Another great comment, much appreciated, thanks. Gregan was a top player he is respected by many. Fourie du Preez is a brilliant player and could soon be up there with the likes of Joost, Matt Dawson, Marshall & Gregan...
This man had it all for a rugby player pace ,power ,tactical kicking and the skill to read a game also his defence was second to none...It will be a long..... long time before there will be another srumhalf who could do what he could...Joost! - thank you for all the memories you were a pleasure to watch.
was in the stadium when he played his first international match, and surprisingly was present again when he played his last. a magnificent play. Joost, thanx for the glorious moments
Excellent to hear from you in Somoa, great to see all rugby supporters from all over the globe appreciate such a great player as Joost. You said man, can't believe how many brilliant no 9's SA has produced, not sure how the coach is going to choose his top man??? Cool comment, thank you very much, take care...
we were watching a vid of the lions tour to SA in 1997 at my old school once and it was seeing this man play that got me into rugby, he truly was a great player.
Its laughable to think that a brazzer and a bag of chop could not anything to damage this Great Man's reputation. Joost - You are Legend. I don't care what you do in your retirement. You deserved it. We love you. Snort & Fck all you like....
i thought pinaer from the sharks has a similar style to his...dunno why january always got ahead of him...is it a black quota thing in SA???...mind u that try january scored in 08 vs the abs to win the game was outstanding
Ruan Pienaar is a good player at no 9, but January is actually better in that position anyway. I actually prefer Fourie du Preez at scrumhalf for SA but his a bit off form since his last few injuries. When he is at the top of his game I think he could possibly be the next Joost if given a chance...
i agree buddie. infact u can c traits of Joost in Fourie. good kicking game and physical presence on the pitch. Joost truily is a great springbok legend
'Assain eyes' good one, it actually suits him. Thank you for the cool comment, much appreciated when the talent of such a legendary player is acknowledged.
Joost Van der Westhuizen was brilliant against Wales (among others) and you're right to hold him as a hero. He would be a fine choice for an all-time world XV, it's just that (without too much bias, as he was surely the complete player) I happen to rate Gareth as the best player in any position. Of course he was in my formative years. But the Boks have had so many incredible packs. Wales has too often had to rely on scraps of possession and exciting back play. It's a very different tradition.
Great comments , thank you. Wales are playing brilliantly at the moment. I am sure they will take the 6 Nations this 2009 again. I will be shouting fo them. Cheers
You're very kind. I don't necessarily expect we'll win the tournament, France have home advantage against us and we have a terrible home record against Ireland who are no mugs. Last time we won the grand slam in 05 we were useless for the next 2 years. We rely on confidence; when we start well we usually carry it on. I think we're tougher now under Gatland + Edwards, so i don't expect a calamity either, but it could be a close 6 nations all round. Anthing can happen.
The Welsh backline work well together, if they can just keep their form up then I think they have a good chance. Its a whole new Welsh team this year. They shouldn't repeat past mistakes, will just have to wait and see. Cheers
Mizo. You're bang on with your comments! I'm English, we haven't developed since WC win in 2003!! There again, Brian Ashton was treated awfully and didn't get the support he deserved yet came 2nd in 2007! I've relayed to Bethulie I'm NOT too confident about the Lions tour, 4th in the 6 nations BUT you provide the 1 name who gets on the Lions sheet, Gethin Jenkins! If Ryan Jones played 8, I think he'd probably be another, Powell is 1 dimensional and was found wanting against us, Italy and France!
well, tyrant1505, seems i was not far wrong over Wales and the 6 nations. It wasn't exactly a prediction but the results didn't surprise me. It was there ready for the taking by whichever team was really up for it, and i doubted Wales had quite the forward power or talent to overcome teams better prepared for us. Progress for England though.
A very great player, devastating finisher at close range, pace and power, dynamic fierce competitor. I'd rate him all-time 2nd best scrum-half behind Gareth Edwards, but ahead of Catchpole and Loveridge among others. I'm sorry, but anyone who doesn't have Edwards at #1 simply doesn't know their rugby history, must be too young.
My 1st memory of the Boks was the 1969-70 tour of Britain. That great back row, with Greyling and Ellis, and De Villiers at scrum half. Gareth scored a try in a draw between Wales + the Boks, at the start of Wales' best decade. Take a look at the 2 videos of Welsh Rugby in the 70s. The Boks and All Blacks have a mystical hold on the minds of us in Wales, but we obsess too much over beating England instead. I wish i could remember Frik Du Preez, a legend like Colin Meads for the All Blacks.
Its men like this that make me proud to be a south african and a proud rugby supporter. He inspires people to give there all and to give all you have to the thing you love most in life...

great great player jsut a pity he didn't get 100 caps for the bokke, the boks have some great scrum halves coming through at the moment so hopefully wont be long until we see another true great bok scrum half.
