To my experience Thai people (and Thai girlfriends) are almost always curious to check out the boundaries. There are situations when a certain request from may seem to be pretty outrageous. But if declined reasonably enough, I found my Thai partner never insisting on something I considered exaggerated.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that your difference in age may have had an impact on the failure of your relationship.

This isn't to say that there is anything inherently wrong with a farang your age having a relationship with a young woman her age. Outside of the context of "settling down" or "choosing a life partner," a relationship like this can function.

What I have learned is that some Thai families - not all ! - have distorted / unrealistic expections about the "wealth" that a foreigner may pour over a potentially unlimited no. of relatives. If a Thai women with a foreign boyfriend or husband gets pressure from family members to squeeze out (more) money from the foreigner then a very unpleasant situation is created.
