@DuykRuyk If you mean technique wise then i would agree with you. GSP's takedowns are a lot more technical than Kos's but Koscheck is an elite athlete and uses his athleticism to take people down with force. If you watch Koscheck's highlights, most of his opponents start to sprawl and know he's shooting on them but it's still not enough to stop his takedown
I'm not the biggest Josh Koscheck fan at all, but having seen his wrestling live daily and hearing what people who train with him and under him have to say you can't really deny he really is that good. Now if you want to talk about UFC commentators, do you know Joe Rogan is actually skilled?
@DuykRuyk and yet he was a four time division 1 all american and a former national champion. don't you think that someone with that level of wrestling experience has great takedowns? Use your head
@DuykRuyk You're ridiculous. How many people can stop his takedowns. I'd like to see you stop a few. Nobody judges takedowns on how pretty they look, they judge them on if they work or not
@jawsh38 Most people in the UFC now have almost no technique, but their conditioning is so good that they don't need it. They can just bulldoze through anything. If you can't see that then you're a lost cause.
@DuykRuyk okay well wrestlers have some of the best conditioning today and I'd like to see the best college wrestlers against Josh Koscheck. He would be able to take down the cream of the crop. Part of takedowns are the athleticism that fighter has.
@DuykRuyk MMA wrestling is different than the freestyle wrestling you'd usually see. Yes, if he tried these same takedowns against a top D1 wrestler, he would be sprawled on all day. Likewise, if he shot for traditional freestyle takedowns, he wouldn't be able to do them from so far away or be able to avoid shots as easily. I understand what you're trying to say, but claiming a former national champion doesn't know how to shoot a takedown is idiotic
dam he just gets ahold of one of those legs. sucks it to his hips and drives till your on the ground. dont even need technique hes just got some powerfull legs and back.
@PankrationWarrior cool. ive never really used that in any match before but its a good move. brock lesnar submitted shane carwin with the arm triangle.
@PankrationWarrior nah i wrestle varsity so what we call our type of wrestling is "folk wrestling" but its similar in style to freestyle. the only difference is that you dont wear headgear in freestyle and you cant throw someone in the manner that they do in freestyle. of course you can throw someone in our type of wrestling but its done in a different way. what we do is kinda like collegiate wrestling. collegiate wrestling is basically folk wrestling which is what i do. go check out ncaa
@PankrationWarrior in wrestling matches you push the pace or you lose. its not like you take your time to pick your shots and all that ya know like going kinda slow in wrestling matches you set up and you shoot for the takedown and you do it fast because if you dont hes gonna take you down so wrestling matches (atleast in my experience) are very high paced .
@PankrationWarrior yea its tough. especially the matches because of the rules. you cant be on your back which i dont have a problem with because im pretty good at jiu jitsu but yea.
@PankrationWarrior i havent trained in judo but i am capable of doing some judo throws there is something called harai goshi or something i can do that and the other one is called uchi mata those r the only 2 i can do
@PankrationWarrior well im wrestle at varsity level. and i train in jiu jitsu but not brazilian style. there is something called 10th planet which is a diffferent style of jiu jitsu and they have gym here so yea i go there to train. for the strking i do thai boxing and western boxing. i was thinkin about doing taekwondo when i was 7 but i decided not to.
that guy who he versed is a complete amateur.... he doesn't know how to defend against take downs.... kosh is dirty ass fighter that is the reason why he won't get far
Josh can take ppl down at will. Plus the drive he puts into them are fantastic to watch, an absolute juggernaut.
Though GSP is better. It's funny to say this, considering their training history and accolades, but GSP is a better wrestler and, like last time, will out-technique Josh. Imo.
how come UFC fighters shoot like that? they way i was taught to shoot on my wrestling team was to take a penetration step and then drive all the way to my knee and then bring my other foot up and then drive
@cptprice14: because of the stance and distance they use
a typical mma stance moves between a low wrestling stance and a boxing or kickboxing stance
a wrestler's distance is also too close to stand that low. you'd get punched in the face all day at that distance. strikers stand at a much farther distance
if you look again at what koscheck is doing, he jabs with a striking stance at a striking distance, causing his opponent to cover up. then goes lower for the shoot. he can't drop the knee
@RacMan93 actually I wouldn't say he owned Josh Koscheck. Yes he beat him but Josh did a much better job on the ground than most fighters do against gsp.
josh owned jeff..he did have some ground n pound on him..30-27 decision is fair. Josh is one fight away from a title shot and I know that when he fights gsp it will be a totally different story from last time. Josh is a more complete fighter now.
Jmerritt: No, he did not own Jeff. Ownage is what Dan Henderson did to Bisping.
In fact, the Joslin vs Koscheck fight was debated the day after and many including myself did not know who Joslin was.
Yes, Josh is a great fighter although being a douche. However, the only way he can win against GSP is with an over hand right and I don't see that happening.
@Lossforwords78 dan knocked out mike,he didnt dominate him up to that point, dominating is ownage like what gsp does to everybody even when he doesnt finish them
@billysue2 Come on, I never used the word dominated. Ownage was exactly what dan did to Mike during the knockout. That was one of the best knockouts in recent memory.
I did not use the word dominate, but I do partially agree with you. Mike was running and it seemed the match would be a marathon caused by the "running man." The match was up in the air until the KO.
Imagine if Kos just learns form GSP. Strike a little then when the opponent enganges.... BOOM, take his ass down. With Kos' improvemnt in his striking.... he could do that :D
@nate19226 when thiago connects with the uppercut and left hook then Josh hits the floor, you can see in thiago's eyes and attitude that he is surprised himself, plus Josh wasn't Out .
@nate19226 if you are referencing paulo thiago vs koscheck i think you might need to watch that fight again. it was pretty fucking clear who should have won. im not a fan of either one of theirs but thiago dropped him like his name was james thompson. i dont see how 9 people gave you thumbs up on your outlandishly idiotic comment.
@RebelWrestler45 yeah he got caught and was hurt bad but it was an early stoppage. his legs were up and he was lifting his hands getting ready to grab paulo in his gaurd
@kennylenny2007 No Kos was completely out of it; just because he wasn't knocked out cold, doesn't mean he was still able to defend himself. How do you develope a good shot for a takedown? How do wrestlers do it? Would it be doing sets of explosive sprints, weights? Any wrestlers out there on YouTube with any suggestions?
alot of live wrestling where you force yourself to shoot. Shadow wrestling (just shooting into the air). DRILL DRILL DRILL(on a live partner or an "Adam")!!! Deadlift and/or sandbag lifts are alot of help.
if your not familiar with workout terms just look these up: they're great grappling/takedown exercises
-deadlifts.-good mornings.-bent over rows.-squats. -duck walks.-military presses.-lunges
i suggest looking thes up and doing these with a minimal weight and 8 reps per each excersize. do about 5-6 sets if you can. get your self a bench bar for these and some weights.
stand up work out help improve the ablility to throw your opponent in mid air, and lunges are good work ouot to work the hamstring and stand up power used to take a shot, and also whats called a leap frog after shoting the leg, just keep running it until you hit the floor
a good way to gian explosofness is to get a big tire an a good size sluge hammer and hit the tire one 2 3 an over a aigan give you good explosofness in everything bjj boxing kickboxing wreslting in your case
I'd have to say hundreds and thousands od lunges and stairs. Those are all i really did and no one could stop my shot. the double leg takedown is a pretty low rated move. I could take anyone down at will
I don't see why Kos couldn't do this with Alves. Its like he chose to keep it standing. But why stand with a Muay Thai expert, if striking is your not your strongest weapon?
Koschek q mierda solo espero y sueño con el dia de q chris leben te patee el culo y llores como la marica llorona q siempre has sido..cada vez q vez a leben se te nota el miedo q le tienesjaja no temas q el solo te va a lastimar un poco..
look at the rest of his fights with deigo and dustin . and javier mendez says he striking is getting pretty good. i read a FIGHT magazine article which said josh koscheck wuz repeatedly kicking baroni in his ribs the whole sparring match !
okay, diego had staph infection when he fought sanchez, and his striking is pretty good, but nowhere near Diego's, I mean did you see their first fight in the T.U.F. show? diego out struck the shit out of him, and when they had a rematch he was sick, and you could tell because diego, win or loose always goes hard, and a sparring match is alot different than an actual MMA bout.
yeah, his striking has developed, but still, he's got a little more training to do, but I was impressed when he fought Thiago, he lost, but he was doing pretty good
GSP pick a leg for the takedown everytime Josh kicked. GSP had a gameplan from start to finish. Had Josh did the same thing it would have been a different outcome.
josh ismt a very good fighter i would love to c him take out chriss leeban he did it once but chriss wasnt as experiancet josh wouldnt stand a chance!!
Not that easy? dude Koscheck is atleast a 2-time national amerikan NCAA wrestling champion, no matter how much chris leben has trained in wrestling, Koscheck will always have a big advantage,Remember that.
I understand he is one of the best wrestlers in mma and that he could take Chris Leben down but my point is he wouldnt be able to just pound him out like you said he would, Leben is one tough mother fucker
Leben is a one trick pony. He didn't have an answer when they fought the first time and that was a Kos with 6 months training. He'd get a beating for 3 rounds and would look worse than he did after the Bisping fight. And he was on roids that time too which shows you he is no more than a cheat and an epic failure.
That fight has nothing to do with Leben fighting Koscheck. Styles make fights, and stylistically Leben doesn't match up well against Koscheck. He didn't the first time and he wouldn't a second time round. He would get taken down and beaten on for 3 rounds en route to a wide points win for Kos.
4 time all american He got 4th 3rd 1st and second repectively. Koscheck was my coach for about to yrs at Buffalo Wrestling baby yahhhhhhhhhh! get tuff!
You have no idea nor do any of us what would have happened if Koscheck had tried a different strategy. The fact of the matter though is GSP took Koscheck down when he needed too and Koscheck couldnt which lost him the fight.
GSP did outwrestle him... But GSP isn't just a kyokushin fighter. GSP trains wrestling with the Canadian National team and can outwrestle most of them... He is an awesome wrestler and a brown belt in BJJ... He is also the most naturally strong and gifted athletes in the game.
lmao they say the other guy is doing a good job defending josh's takedowns but he keeps getting put on his back......joe rogan Shut The Fuck UP!!!! lol
umm, are you seriously standing behind this post? Defending shots and takedowns from a Division I wrestler is much easier said than done. You obviously don't train one bit.
Yeah because defending a former NCAA champions shot is just that easy. There are tons of wrestlers who only have one effective takedown yet they have developed it to such a skill that it is nearly impossible to stop.
That was a dumb comment... Josh Koscheck is 2 time division 1 national champion in wrestling. This was also Jeff Joslin's UFC debut against one of the worlds best, and Joslins first time fighting in a cage. Are you going to say that if Koscheck shot on you with a cage behind you, that you would defend it no problem?
i meant about the one effective takedown, his takedowns are amazing yes but their not impossible to stop, i mean gsp, a kyokushin fighter outwrestled him
GSP did outwrestle him... But GSP isn't just a kyokushin fighter. GSP trains wrestling with the Canadian National team and can outwrestle most of them... He is an awesome wrestler and a brown belt in BJJ... He is also the most naturally strong and gifted athletes in the game.
tjosh koscheck is the epitomy of boring... shooters and LnPers suck rolling leglocks and flying armbars and supplexes are where its at, and submissions... gnp even but dont just keep your opponent warm like a blanket
Ahh no you dont. You get points for the damage you can inflict after you get the takedowns or the ability to control the fight if little damage occurs.
Koschek didn't destroy him. He is just a freakish athlete and took him down, but being the blanket he is never had Joslin close to finished or in trouble at any time. Joslin kept him intact most of the time on the ground within his guard. Boring fight from Koschek, but he kept on taking Joslin down and neutralized any attacks and won. LnP ftw...
Well I loved watching GSP beat him at his own game. Koscheck has good TDs, but GSP has much dfaster and more exlosive takedowns.

stand up work out help improve the ablility to throw your opponent in mid air, and lunges are good work ouot to work the hamstring and stand up power used to take a shot, and also whats called a leap frog after shoting the leg, just keep running it until you hit the floor
Fernando14552 2 years ago
a good way to gian explosofness is to get a big tire an a good size sluge hammer and hit the tire one 2 3 an over a aigan give you good explosofness in everything bjj boxing kickboxing wreslting in your case
bloodizraw 2 years ago
hitting tires with sledge hammers wont help explosiveness.
FMMAnewera 2 years ago 4
I'd have to say hundreds and thousands od lunges and stairs. Those are all i really did and no one could stop my shot. the double leg takedown is a pretty low rated move. I could take anyone down at will
mnight207 2 years ago
some explosive workouts you cn do:
kip-ups,
run sleds,
clean and jerk,
run inclines,
and just drill like crazy,
15 minutes of drilling,5 minutes break,then go another 15.
FMMAnewera 2 years ago 2
That is amazing display of wreslting!!!

To me koscheck doesnt get the credit he deserves because he is a great athlete and fighter. Give him credit people!!!!
Nishe123 2 years ago 2
I don't see why Kos couldn't do this with Alves. Its like he chose to keep it standing. But why stand with a Muay Thai expert, if striking is your not your strongest weapon?
jkullander 2 years ago
well they are both different fighters now so I think it would be an interesting matchup and a hell of alot better than the first fight

screwston713ivan 3 years ago
look at the rest of his fights with deigo and dustin . and javier mendez says he striking is getting pretty good. i read a FIGHT magazine article which said josh koscheck wuz repeatedly kicking baroni in his ribs the whole sparring match !
geneticman13 3 years ago
okay, diego had staph infection when he fought sanchez, and his striking is pretty good, but nowhere near Diego's, I mean did you see their first fight in the T.U.F. show? diego out struck the shit out of him, and when they had a rematch he was sick, and you could tell because diego, win or loose always goes hard, and a sparring match is alot different than an actual MMA bout.
screwston713ivan 3 years ago
yea of course .... when he first started mma he couldnt stand up for shit but since the deigo fight he has been showing tons of improvement
geneticman13 3 years ago
diego had staff when he fought sanchez?

GSP pick a leg for the takedown everytime Josh kicked. GSP had a gameplan from start to finish. Had Josh did the same thing it would have been a different outcome.
aquin520 3 years ago
josh ismt a very good fighter i would love to c him take out chriss leeban he did it once but chriss wasnt as experiancet josh wouldnt stand a chance!!
cosmo1324 3 years ago
you dont know that dude..All kosckeck needs is to take Chris leben down and pound his ass..think before you talk.
morgall 3 years ago
I dont think it would be that easy now
robcore919 3 years ago
Not that easy? dude Koscheck is atleast a 2-time national amerikan NCAA wrestling champion, no matter how much chris leben has trained in wrestling, Koscheck will always have a big advantage,Remember that.
morgall 3 years ago
I understand he is one of the best wrestlers in mma and that he could take Chris Leben down but my point is he wouldnt be able to just pound him out like you said he would, Leben is one tough mother fucker
robcore919 3 years ago
Leben is a one trick pony. He didn't have an answer when they fought the first time and that was a Kos with 6 months training. He'd get a beating for 3 rounds and would look worse than he did after the Bisping fight. And he was on roids that time too which shows you he is no more than a cheat and an epic failure.
baldylocks2006 2 years ago
yeah and thats why Koscheck got knocked the fuck out by a jiu jitsu guy with crappy striking
robcore919 2 years ago
FAIL!
That fight has nothing to do with Leben fighting Koscheck. Styles make fights, and stylistically Leben doesn't match up well against Koscheck. He didn't the first time and he wouldn't a second time round. He would get taken down and beaten on for 3 rounds en route to a wide points win for Kos.
baldylocks2006 2 years ago
4 time all american He got 4th 3rd 1st and second repectively. Koscheck was my coach for about to yrs at Buffalo Wrestling baby yahhhhhhhhhh! get tuff!
jakedasnake160 2 years ago
You have no idea nor do any of us what would have happened if Koscheck had tried a different strategy. The fact of the matter though is GSP took Koscheck down when he needed too and Koscheck couldnt which lost him the fight.
99Steve 3 years ago 2
GSP did outwrestle him... But GSP isn't just a kyokushin fighter. GSP trains wrestling with the Canadian National team and can outwrestle most of them... He is an awesome wrestler and a brown belt in BJJ... He is also the most naturally strong and gifted athletes in the game.

wadeiverson03 4 years ago
umm, are you seriously standing behind this post? Defending shots and takedowns from a Division I wrestler is much easier said than done. You obviously don't train one bit.
matrix31003 4 years ago 3
Yeah because defending a former NCAA champions shot is just that easy. There are tons of wrestlers who only have one effective takedown yet they have developed it to such a skill that it is nearly impossible to stop.
99Steve 3 years ago
ya but koscheck hasnt
bonacci1 3 years ago
That was a dumb comment... Josh Koscheck is 2 time division 1 national champion in wrestling. This was also Jeff Joslin's UFC debut against one of the worlds best, and Joslins first time fighting in a cage. Are you going to say that if Koscheck shot on you with a cage behind you, that you would defend it no problem?
SuprSman 3 years ago
i meant about the one effective takedown, his takedowns are amazing yes but their not impossible to stop, i mean gsp, a kyokushin fighter outwrestled him
bonacci1 3 years ago

dude in mma u get points for takedowns....there i sere 4 of them in one fight yea hes gonna win
WUTANG826 4 years ago
Ahh no you dont. You get points for the damage you can inflict after you get the takedowns or the ability to control the fight if little damage occurs.
99Steve 3 years ago
Koschek didn't destroy him. He is just a freakish athlete and took him down, but being the blanket he is never had Joslin close to finished or in trouble at any time. Joslin kept him intact most of the time on the ground within his guard. Boring fight from Koschek, but he kept on taking Joslin down and neutralized any attacks and won. LnP ftw...
