Very nice. I think I might try this using frozen hash brown potatoes. The potato sticks I think are also called "Shoe String Potatoes" and are often found in the chip section of the market. Great sauce recipe, too.
Hi Ms. Betty, try topping it with canned cream (not fresh) and a couple of spoons of Kraft spreadable cheese and a tea spoon of mayo. It's awesome. Good sauce for chicken fillets too.
How could I cut this recipe in Half for like a 8 by 8 square baking dish and I don't care for green onions what could I substitute for that? Any suggestions
@brittneydargusch21 That's a good idea. I do have Sizzling Steak Fajitas here:
youtube.com/watch?v=Rcmc_WQWvKw
I don't know if that would be helpful, because I used a seasoning blend that you might not have on hand. I do have Sirloin Steak Stir Fry in bettyskitchen (2 varieties) that might work.
Just regular tri tip that we grilled last night and we cut it Into slices when we ate it just wondering if there was a casserole to maybe make with the left over tri tip I have
@brittneydargusch21 I'm assuming that is something like sirloin tip roast (beef). I can't think of anything right off, other than maybe a hot roast beef sandwich.
Can u use regular onions instead of green onions and Is there something else u can use for the ending ingredient Instead o the potato fries or chips whatever they were called lol
@brittneydargusch21 Yes, regular onions will be delicious in this recipe! Also, a great topping would be a can of French fried onions. If you can't find those, just a standard topping of cracker crumbs and melted butter will be great!
I just made this last night! YUM! I didnt check my sour cream and only had half of a 16ounce container left but it was still awesome. I couldn't help myself and I sprinkled some crispy bacon over the top! Thanks Betty!! DELISH!!!!
This is very creative!!! i always thought of tetor tot hotdish as a main course meal with the hamburger and veggies. I haven't tried this but it looks really good. thumbs up, betty
I have made this with the little petite diced frozen potatos and mixed everything up together but I think this probably tastes even better. The tots would be a bit crisp under all the creamy cheese mixture which I would prefer. Love the addition of the stix too. I sprinkle those on Mac&Cheese sometimes instead of bread crumbs. Can't wait to try your version.
I just threw this one in the oven! I added hamburger meat and french onions for the topping! Thanks again, I am in a cooking rut and needed a few new recipe ideas!
@4lilbugsmom I'm delighted that you liked the tater tot casserole! Thanks for your lovely feedback! I really appreciate it! Adding the hamburger and French fried onions sounds wonderful!
I was just wondering.. What's the average calories per portion in this dish? Is there any way of making a healthier version of this? Cz it looks yum and I really want to try it...
@vibhasrivastava87 The calories in this dish would be a lot; you can reduce them by using fresh potatoes, cut into the shape of French fries. Spray them with oil and bake until soft. Sprinkle with low-fat cheese of any type you like and continue to bake until cheese is melted.
Lots of starches, cheese, potatoes and pure yumminess.
I've always loved this recipe and now I make it when family comes over for Holidays and they all love this. Your recipe is delicious and only difference is that I use cream of chicken and I mix in some ground beef. But regardless thanks for the recipe. I'm definitely a visual learner more than a "book" learner.
I just made my first tater tot casserole consisting of the title ingredient, cream of chicken, corn, green beans and hamburger. I browned the hamburger and spiced it up with crushed red pepper. It ended up near perfect as the heat wasn't enough to spoil the casserole. :D
Thanks again for a simple, and affordable recipe. I had a dinner party and it was a huge hit with my guests. None have ever had tater tots prepared this way. One especially liked the fact that it was vegetarian.
miss betty.......... i cant wait to trythis out, i think i'll make it this sunday night!! looks yummylicious"" your husband and kids are soo lucky to have you!! the dish looks so tasty!!! im going to add hamburger meat..yummy!! thanks!!
I made this yesterday and it was delicious! I used cream of potato and it made it really creamy and the onions gave it a kick of flavor! I'll be making this a lot more. Thanks Betty!
@TheJessob I said the same thing lol, I make mine the way you do, but I put my tots on top and they get nice and crispy so they make their own toping, so I don't have to add anything later, and I add onion to the ground beef when Im browning it.
Thanks Betty for the advice.I will double the recipe then bake it early in the am,transfer it into my crock pot.I will have to layer it tho due to doubling the recipe.
I am going to make one like this but with hash browns.Betty,I'm going to ask you a silly question.:)Can this dish do ok at room temp after its been baked? The place I go for for meetings/luncheon has no kitchen so would it be wiser to transfer this ( after its baked ) to a crock pot and keep it on low for 2 hrs.?
@HattieLovesCattie This will be fine at room temperature for a couple of hours. It actually tastes better hot, so your crock pot option is good, also.
I made two 13x9 casseroles for a potluck and I felt that it was missing something so in one of them I put shredded chicken and in the other I put ground beef. They were delish!! Especially since you can never go wrong with chicken and ground beef mixed with sour cream!
@RoxyHeartsYa I get where you're coming from but I think Betty was trying to make this a side dish instead of the main course so to speak. She mentioned this in the begining. I too was wondering why there was no beef or chicken until she said it was a side dish to burgers or steak.

Hiya Betty! I tell everyone I know "Never fool with reduced fat cheese, especially for cooking!" It is never an acceptable substitute, in my opinion, especially when you consider that the reduced is not too much less fattening anyway.
I made this a week ago and i have to hand it to you. First off it was very simple. It is very reasonably priced and it is a delicious dish. It was like sour cream and onion potato chips taken to a new level. It's good to see recipes that any college student could prepare. Not all students or people starting on their own have the ability in the kitchen or the confidence to cook. This was just excellent dish to know of for so many reasons. Thank you for the really great work that you do.

They are shredded potatoes that are shaped into small cylinders. They are sold in the frozen food section, and are partially cooked. You may substitute French fries or fresh potatoes (slightly cooked).
hi betty! im not the best cook so i would like to know what you think. if i wanted to add bacon to this recipe which layer would you put it in or make it on the side??
Hey Betty, I love your recipes and cannot wait to make this one. I was wonderign if you could substitute the cream of mushroom for something else. I hate mushrooms and was wondering if it could be omitted. Thanks!
Just got finished with your tot casserole dinner- it was great!!! My husband loved it!! It really hit the spot!!!! I added chicken by the way, so it could be a main dish.
This will be dinner tonight!! I don't know if I've responded every time I've made something of yours, but everything I've tried, I've loved and so has my husband!!!!!
Hi Betty...I made this recipe this past weekend and it was so good. We had it with sirloin steaks and my hubby just LOVED it! Thanks so much for the delish recipe

what are tater tots??lol
flynnser19 2 years ago
They are shredded potatoes that are shaped into small cylinders. They are sold in the frozen food section, and are partially cooked. You may substitute French fries or fresh potatoes (slightly cooked).

I would cook the bacon until crisp, then add it into the sauce mixture. Sounds great!

Hey Betty, I love your recipes and cannot wait to make this one. I was wonderign if you could substitute the cream of mushroom for something else. I hate mushrooms and was wondering if it could be omitted. Thanks!
babygyrl86 2 years ago
Yes, you may substitute cream of celery or cream of chicken soup in place of the mushroom soup--Any crem soup will do!

Just got finished with your tot casserole dinner- it was great!!! My husband loved it!! It really hit the spot!!!! I added chicken by the way, so it could be a main dish.
