  • These guys have to be from Arkansas :) YEEHAW !!!!! ooo how i love good ole Arkansas !

  • @mdick2328 I think they were from Kentucky? And Arkansas isn't that great...

  • my hair !!

  • My Grandmothers name is Marguerite Moore. I couldnt begin to be able to put to words how much I love her. She passed while I was in Prison. She sang me the whinny the pooh song. The people you leave behind from stupid mistakes make for a sorrow life. I think I messed up time I could of spent seeing her. My Sister has her name. I have two sisters. But, Marguerite protects me from alot. So does my Mom. I am not going to mess this up. I hate living in regret.

  • Thumbs up if you're a "dapper dan" man

  • @Besta89 NO thanks, I like FOP

  • Best commercial version of this old Hymn. Great movie too.

  • Death couldn't be have sounded more beautiful. I am just lesser scared of mortality after this :)

  • My mama and my grandma always said this song should be sung with happy voices, because it is a joyous song. Alisson and Gillian do this very well. :) According to my mama, this song needs a big smile to go along with it. :D

  • Alison and Gillian vocies go together like peanut butter and jelly! :-)

  • ma hair

  • i almost had forgotten about this omovie ^.^

  • Im only 14.

& i live in the city.

Im proud to say i still listen to this music.

  • daddy this to you because i know u flew away and i know that we will see each other again i love you and miss you so very much.

  • my grandmother and her sisters sing thsi song like it should be. in person. the beauty and conviction in their voice carries the soul to new and enlightened heights.

  • is that a Douglas County Nebarska plate at 1:16?

  • @90hanus bullshit comment how bout we just skip that asshole!!!!

  • bull shit version! skip this...

  • what was this movie about ....im 13 and i have seen it a few times

  • @calebilove98 this movie was an update of homer's oddesy

  • Hot Damn! It's the Soggy Bottom Boys!

  • BRILLIANT film, great cast, great soundtrack, Coen brothers' best.

  • Out of curiosity, how many of you would trade the time you live in now to live in that time?

I would. Back when things made sense.

  • @dpmaint1 Minus the whole Great Depression and racism, I actually would. :)

  • @dpmaint1 i would

  • When I die, hallelujah by and by, I'll fly away

  • this movie made me a bluegrass fan

  • love it....

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Great song

  • It's a beautiful song- -yet, the times Depression era are coming back, and a Dispensational doctrine of Sensational Escape will not serve to deliver from the trials of life. Time to get real, get praying and take action.

  • Old time music(pronounced timey) our own invention of songs from the homeland-England,Scotland,Ireland, Germany, France, Spain etc....

  • that gospel music...how can u not love that

  • So good...maybe the best bluegrass song ever.

  • This song makes me think of my 89-year old grandmother, who had vivid memories of growing up on a farm in the Great Depression...a lot of happy memories, actually, and so interesting, of a different time...and now she is in a nursing home and incapacitated. So when I'm there holding her hand, "I'll Fly Away" comes into my mind, because I imagine that's exactly what she wants to do.

  • @squamish4244 : Sing to her! ;o)

  • @JeffMountainPicker I do! (Quietly.)

  • @squamish4244 hold tight, love her well. my mom loved this movie made her laugh and cry. JUST LOVE HER. and yes that is all she wants.. be at peace all is good..

  • @squamish4244 My 89 year old grandmother passed away yesterday morning. She woke up and dressed in her Sunday best, lied back down on the bed and passed on. She kept saying she was ready since she could see all of her grandkids grow up. Man, this song hits home..

  • @bassplayerpet Thank you for sharing your story.

  • Well, Phalanx, or is it phallic worshiper? Hitler's dick? My apologies to the decent people of Texas for having an inbred closet case attempt to speak for you. But I do love Steve Earl and Robert Earl Keen, and the music scene in Austin kicks ass. Thanks Gillian and Alison for such a superb rendition of an exquisite hillbilly gospel classic.

  • The film was fantastic - have watched it many times always funny powerful and good entertainment a great American film about REAL Americana.

  • Recently played at my 96-year old aunt's funeral service. Such a great song! Rapture indeed!

  • I want this song played at my funeral.

  • Hitler's Dick!

  • Alison is a pretty singer. Like her voice and work

  • I miss my Southern Roots!!!!! Alabama transplant to LA, CA

  • An American classic.

  • LOVE!! :)

  • I was born and raised in the Bronx, Surrounded by guidos and hood rats listening to the crap they call music. (rap). i had to move to texas to get away from it and here I found the music that Speaks to me. "Oh Brother..." Is not only a great movie but the music is awesome. Even my little son likes it. I just hope artisits keep up the good music and never let it die. or else I'm screwed.

  • @dansalvatori1974 arent you Italian american too. Thing about texas is we leave each other alone and enjoy each other. New york isnt that bad i bet. Texan music is way different then southern music.

  • @dansalvatori1974 Its good to see you found the good music.

  • Classic remake of Homers "Odessy". Genius!

  • @allisonndr Odessy is the book, right? Maybe even a short story.

  • im from south texas... this landscape from the movie brings me back to my childhood memories, this is one song i would love to be played in my funeral!

  • I'm not a religious person, but do I love this movie. I sure can apprecate it.

  • my favorite movie too, must have watched it 50 times or so

  • My favorite movie of all!

  • prefer the gospel version of this i grew up on..but this is still a very good version

  • I am so sorry for the loss of your mom. I lost my mom last year. I saw Alison Krausse with Union Station last night at the Beacon. The show was an A+. In New york City folks don't even know who Alison Krausse is. That is terrible. With 26 Grammy awards and 12 milion albums sold,if the music industry really got behind Alsion the last 20 years, she probably woould have sold at least 25 million albums with 40 grammy awards. Alison Krausss is the best.

  • @is1531 ?!??!! I lived in NYC for 8 years and lived around the corner from one of many bars that showcased country and bluegrass talent 364 days a year. There are proabably more Alison Krauss fans there than in whole blue states of self-proclaimed "country music lovers" who tune in to syndicated stations that are playing Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley all day every day.

  • see....i had this one woman who i thought of as my grandmother....she was a granny to all of her grandbabies......we all called her granny tee......she was 96 when she passed and all of the grandbabies when to the funeral and we all sung this and there had to be like 15 of us and our age range was from about 2 to 16

  • Had this song played at my dad's funeral...tomorrow would have been his birthday RIP Dad.

  • This is an amazing song, it was played at my Great Uncle's funeral back in September. I don't think I've heard a better version of it since then. Whenever I listen to this, it reminds me of him and it makes me happy. I'm not usually good at picking favorites but this is my favorite song by far.

  • HOT DAMN BOYS!!!

  • two more beautiful female voices would be hard to find. T bone is such a great producer/collector/ of talent, finder of terrific roots songs, and matcher of songs to talent. He's a national treasure.

  • Not quite as good as Hank Sr. - but very good nonetheless.

  • Sweet sweet music in a world od miserable noise, God Bless It!

  • - - - we're in a tight spot boys..........

  • @oneoldcrowbone "Damn we're in a tight spot" This movie is the only time I've heard that line 3 times in 15 seconds

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Our sister and I definitely appreciate utilizing the webpage Mediaoutletonline to attain music files. You can easily find this music there...just search Google or bing for mediaoutletonline

  • muy pegajosa, cada vez que la oigo no puedo parar de cantarla. quiero la pongan en mi funeral. gracias POR TU MAGIA, ALISON!

  • this song and it's message are fresh as the morning dew

  • We played it at my dad's funeral and everyone sang, even the funeral director way at the back the church, Mom had taught us girls to sing in harmonies when we were little too.

  • no reason to bring children to a funeral there kids . people arnt thinking how it can effect a child .grown ups handle death a lot better than children thats y there called children

  • @eredy you are an idiot. How do you expect them to learn about death. It sill happens!

  • @eredy Wow. Just wow.

  • I'm exactly the 2,000,000 view on this song. i hope it gets 2,000,000 more

  • My mom and me sang this at my grandmother's funeral a few weeks ago and on the last I'll fly away we let one white helium baloon go and the wind was terrible out there the baloon went straight up and through the clouds. That made me and my mom cry...

  • Seven years ago, when I was ten,I went to my first ever concert and it was Gillian Welch and OCMS. It was a nice and clean sit down venue at the Wheeler,in Aspen. It's nice that a parent can take their ten year old to a Bluegrass concert and they can both enjoy the music! Bluegrass is just like that, clean and wholesome. So thank you Gillian Welch, for being the artist that you are,for having such good, clean, christian lyrics that a little girl and her daddy could come see you together.

  • @JeSuSfReAk6120 You keep saying clean. It is a little creepy , like your kid is going to grow up weird. I suggest you take her to a Niggers with Attitude gig for balance

  • not trying to sound too mean , but if you keep your kids too "clean" and feed them religious dogma , they will probably take Angel Dust and shoot people from the roof of the School.

  • @ilikezappa Okay, first of all, I am the kid from seven years ago, lol. Second I don't necessarily mean clean as in religious music, I just meant that her lyrics, for the most part, are free of sex, drugs, etc. I am a Christian but I listen to all different genre's of music and I don't think that Christian music is the only "clean" music.

  • @JeSuSfReAk6120 I suppose inserting the lines "I`ll fly away ( although the empirical evidence for this is lacking and our evolutionary pathway has denied us the use of wings ) might spoil the poetry ??

  • My mom would sing every note. i miss that.

  • they saing this song at my unckles fearlarl yesterday it was a sad song

  • I remember two girls from my church camp who sang this song all the time. Oh they sounded so pretty~

  • It's a real shame the basement dwellers took over. Word to the wise: if you give the hot pocket, mom does my laundy croud any ammunition at all,,,they will bite, and then some as we see here....Fact of the matter is ,,This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, and It helps a lot of people cope with life through faith. I am not a person of great faith- but I certainly am when I listen to this song..

  • I could listen to this song for hours.

  • @GracieManonla

I have. It's time well spent.

  • This is one of my favorites, it is so inspiring and so close to my heart. It mends my aches just to listen to it.

  • "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" is one of the greatest American films ABOUT America ever made. America as a Mythical land

  • @gmartinz01

    yup

    thats what I thought

    and Im not even American

  • @gmartinz01

Well, the story is actually based on ancient Greek poem "Odyssey" by Homer, only put in early 20th century in USA.

Nevertheless, one GREAT movie, with the best of American gospel music. It is one of the most pleasing creations I have ever watched. And music - you can hear in the recording all those little imperfections, so it is clear it's not fake or heavily tweaked in studio. I suppose they just pressed "record" and let them sing and play, all together, just like in old times.

  • Atheist here and i love this soundtrack to this movie like crazy. Love all the songs on it.

  • @TheJonnyBGoode

Atheist or not, you are here and revere a song that stirs your soul. I will not attempt to persuade you one way or the other but just the same, the music stirs the soul and brings an inner joy that no mortal man can explain, would you agree?

  • This is now the official sound-track for the rapture. :)

  • @MrChukk1 Now that May 31st is past the official song should be "You're too late"

  • @Influx27 "Or do you just not understand what the word "Pagan" originally refers to"

Do you understand what etymology means? Words change their meaning over time and to take every word we use today as their original meaning is absurd.

  • Folks, with due respect STFU!!

  • @ryan23791

Excuse me, instead of insulting people with your vulgar language, maybe you could just enjoy the video YOU insisted on watching. Just because you have an opinion does not mean you need to express it in a disrepectful manner.

  • I do agree with Twnglck40s , never having seen the heavenly lights either I think this is one of the greatest songs ever.(somehow a lot of bluegrass-gospels are fine songs)

  • Pagani in Latin Latin Britain meant "The Painted ones"..those who lived in Pagi or small towns..a slur to non city dwellers

  • You certainly don't have to be a christian to enjoy this.I am Native American Pagan with my own ancestral beliefs. However,I enjoy this immensely....

  • @Anaris10 Pagan? So you're a Greek Farmer? Do you worship Zeus and Hera? Do you grow olives and war with neighboring city states after your crops are all planted? Oh God, you don't engage in pedophilia too do you? Ugh!

Or do you just not understand what the word "Pagan" originally refers to and are recklessly choosing to continue the popular misuse of a word that actually denotes a group of Hellenic farmers who decided against converting to Christianity when Emperor Constantine made it a law?

  • @Influx27 Oh GOD?.....Gives you away,WE don't EVER cap the g!

  • @Anaris10 Really? So you're on such familiar terms with the Creator that you prefer to calling him by his nickname (god) rather than his full name (God)?

  • "friend, i think youve come loose of your foldin paper..."

  • I live 800 miles from my mom who is from the Ozarks. This is my ringtone for her, it always takes me away when I hear it. I'm glad she calls a lot.

  • i'd play this song at my funerals

  • I so wanted this played at my daughter's funeral, but we couldn't find the music in time.

  • How could you dilsike this song?!?

  • For anyone who is looking for a biblical explanation of the gospel and salvation, I would highly recommend checking out the scribd website that is listed on my channel. The scripture references given on there make it very clear and easy to understand.

  • Gosh when i hear this song it takes me back to when i was a child and hearing my grandmother sing it in church or to us when she gave us a bath! I love it

  • I don't know about the hereafter, but heaven on earth is Alison Krauss's sweet voice.

    Can I get an amen?

  • Touches a warm spot inside doesn`t it? let the true love of the lord touch you.

  • cows!? i hate cows. hand me da choppa! hahah

  • Whoever said the Dev!l had the best tunes was a liar..well,they would be but,er,ya know :)

  • i sing this every night to my grandbabys

  • lols at 1:43

  • i feel happy when i listen 2 bluegrass

  • I grew up listening to bluegrass didn't think much of it. Now that ive aged 30 sum odd years, I listen to it all the time, interesting how our childhood comes full circle. Love the same music my dad did!

  • I'd learn banjo just so I could play this song :D

  • AN ATHEIST...MMM SEEMS TO ME IF YOU LIKE THIS SONG THAT IS GOD PULLING AT YOUR HEART ST'RINGS..HE STILL LOVES YOU AND WANTS YOU TO ACCEPT HIM ..AND YOU DONT EVEN BELIEVE IT ..IM PRAYING FOR YOU

  • @100butterflykat that's just your opinion

  • george clooney!! <3

  • @TheBFrizz Bless your heart hon. I lost my sweet Mother past Janurary and it was her favorite. It was played through out her viewing. I am sorry for your loss TheBFriz. Respectfully H>E>Hodge

  • @TheBFrizz I'm sorry for your loss. What a wonderful song to pass along !!

  • @TheBFrizz That story is both really sad and really awesome.

  • original is better. its the one in the movie. if anyone wants to hear it its by the kossoy sisters.

  • I rather the version in the movie :/

  • ... I swear these guys look like my ancestors... :| Anyways.. I really didn't like this song until I heard this version. It's really good.

  • Music like this is one of the only truly beautiful things left in this sick world.

  • love jesus

  • WOOOOO LOVE THIS MOVIIIIIIEEEEE!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • every one else ha said it for me....thumbs and toes UP!!!

  • I like the Kossoy Sisters version better, the one that was in the movie.

  • amen for these good songs! :D

    I <3 THIS MOVIE!

  • This song still brings tears to my eyes...But the weird thing is that it's a mix of happy, hopeful, and sad tears.

  • Sad most people don't know this movie is derived from the Odyssey.

  • @trentn13 shoot, i'm southern and i knew that

  • I grew up in the family of a professed atheist scientist. Oddly, though, every Sunday morning, bluegrass gospel blasted on the Hi-Fi. When we finally got a stereo, I was amazed at the beauty revealed of the harmonies on separate speakers. This song was one of them. I get weepy from nostalgia.

  • @propellerdiver

As an atheist, godless writers, we also know how to appreciate wonderful music...

  • all ecumenics aside, what a lovely piece of music.

  • nice song. greets from holland europe

  • My mom loved this song, I'd never heard it till the "O Brother Where Art Though" (amazing movie if you havnt seen it). A very beautiful song.

  • Just love the mandolin in this song.

  • heh....don't quit your day job. I gave up the opiate 30 years ago. I listen because Alison's voice is beautiful, I enjoyed the movie, and I enjoy folk music.

Your words....yours...that one could not listen to this music and still think there is no god.....if you don't understand what YOU wrote, no way you'll understand what anyone else does.....

  • Yes I absolutely said that and I stand by my word, I also said I was influenced by more than just this song, you are not out of your mind, nor am I, but you obviously did not understand what I said. And if you don't believe, then why are you listening to this song? I'll tell you why, because you believe in the Bible (or at least part of it).

  • @CFBurnz88rod This is an old slave song that refers to how dying is a better alternative to a life in bondage. I like it because I like bluegrass and this song has historical significance to the South. I'm an atheist but like the slave hymns because they have perspective on life.

  • @angrynadya I'm from Lake Charles, LA so yes I am from the south, and yes you are correct.

The Apocalypse, the end of the world as we know it, frees one from the contemporary

world’s hardships. This is a great song no less, no matter what your beliefs are.

  • @angrynadya

Do you do logical contradictions competitively?

An atheist you claim to be, then assert slaves songs which reinforce the lie of an afterlife to secure their enslavement throughout the only one they have have a perspective?

    A perspective of what? Delusion?

  • I love Allison Krauss.

  • Oh my, Fresh Pie....

  • the best movie of it's kind.

  • Ha in tha mornin......Fly away...:)
